Call of Duty: World at War screens and details photo

For those of you following Treyarch's sequel to Infinity Ward's excellent Modern Warfare, we have a treat for you in the form of screenshots and details concerning the Pacific Front-flavored FPS.

A more detailed post is coming soon from our very own Nick Chester, but in the meantime we have plenty for you to be getting on with, including pictures of torture, flamethrowers and scary Japanese people. Yes, Call of Duty: World at War has the three best things ever invented.

Hit the jump for all the hot details.

If you've been following this game at all, you should know by now that World at War is going to be using the same engine as Modern Warfare, though it has been adapted to allow for environmental changes. The much-lauded flamethrower, for example, can be used by players to to burn away cover and leave "a charred battlefield -- and foes -- in their wake."

World at War will also be the first game in the series to include co-op play and goes by the mantra of "No One Fights Alone." Up to four players will be able to take it to the Japanese forces online, while two can fight alongside each other in a split-screen mode. The single-player campaign will include challenges, rankings and online stats for co-op play.

You'll be taking on the role of U.S. and Russian soldiers as they fight against enemies "that employ lethal new tactics and know no fear, no mercy, nor the rules of war." The game's various battles are said to be fought on multiple fronts and will serve "the grittiest, most chaotic and cinematically intense experience to date."

I don't think cinematically is a word, by the way.

As far as the multiplayer goes, Treyarch again intends to build on CoD4's foundations. The focus on squad teamwork is going to be increased with party systems that favor those working together. Both infantry and vehicles will be present in the multiplayer, and the perk system, as we already know, is returning.

Among the more intriguing inclusions are kamikaze fighters, ambush attacks and banzai charges. The team is setting out to make the Japanese forces intimidating and scary opponents, and promise a harrowing experience for all.

Treyarch is setting some lofty goals and really hopes to prove itself with World at War. These details promise a lot, and one can but hope they deliver, because Call of Duty: World at War will be something really special if it meets its expectations.

I got board of killing arabs in the Fox News inspired CoD4 story, so I'm looking forwards to killing wave after wave of pesky Japanese.

i'm not a WWII expert, by anymeans, but wasn't most of the fighting in the pacific done by US forces, because the ruskis were pissed that we (us and uk) didn't attack the german forces from the west?

still looks interesting, may have to invest in another cod game

US and Russian?
So its not all pacific islands and flamethrowers I take it?

Just as well, it's really not a WWII game without Germans :P

Also, when are we going to get to be the Russians fighting the British and Americans?

Well the title is in fact World at War, so I would assume that it's not just in the pacific

I think I'll give this one a miss. CoD4 was alright, it had the setting going for it, but I must say I'm pretty fed up of WWII games. This seems like a step backwards almost

Give it a chance guys. I think it will live up to CoD4. I don't really care about the single player. I just want online play the same as CoD4 and it looks like it will do just that.

To whoever said "Maybe it doesn't take place entirely in the Pacific" is dead on. I think you guys are going to be surprised with World at War; I definitely was, and went in with the "Oh great, another WWII game." My impressions/details/preview will be going live over the next few days.

If the game has anything involving POW camps... things could get pretty fucking brutal if they wanted it to. I hope a few of their maps have some elements of island hopping like Far Cry. I'd think the pacific theater of WWII is ripe for that kind of design.

Do we know if this is COD 5 or 4.5 or something? Because if you notice they don't say COD 5 but COD: World at War.

They said that they wanted to make "the best game ever" in an interview, because they now had 2 years of dev-time instead of the 8 months they had for CoD3.

Killing Japanese is never a bad thing though (they'll only do it themselves if you don't), and as long as they don't stick classes in the multi, I dooooo waaaaaaaaaaaaaaant!

The Russian campaign takes place in Berlin.

This game is gonna do so well in Japan.

Truly, this is this first WWII game to get me excited since Brothers in Arms... if they can really capture the fear and chaos of real war, that would really be something.

BTW, who else has seen Flags of our Fathers/ Letters From Iwo Jima? Great movies.

Are we still calling this one Call of Duty 5?
I think that Infinity Ward is making the numerical COD games from now on, while Treyarch is doing the spin-offs.
Wich means that the rumored sci-fi COD game will be Call of Duty 5.

Also, the russians fought the Japanese from the west (Mongolia, Korea and China) , while Americans came from the east.

I would like to see that you could play as the chinese (nationalist and communists), the brits in Burma would be nice too. And isn't time to let us play as the germans? I mean there are a lot of potential there with many great historical battles like taking the fort Eben Emael, the battle of Wizna, the battle for Narvik etc.

Everyone has made valid points, many I agree with. We're worried about another WW2 game, we want new armies, etc.

For me though, I'm just really tired of being in the same battles, as the Americans every single time.

Just a heads up - the war was going for almost four years before the United States even began fighting. Where is my Talvisota? The defense of Hong Kong? Dieppe? The liberation of Holland? Operation Dynamo? The Fall of Singapore?

I could go on, but, well won't.

Please, just let us play as the rest of the world in WW2. Yes, America was a huge help. Yes, we all appreciate it. But no, you weren't the major player, you didn't win all the battles, and the war was going strong long before you got there.

The Ruskies and the Japs butted heads out there as well, but not among the islands. In fact, the Russian's best troops were in the east for much of the war. It's quite conceivable that the Nippons will be the enemy for the game's entirety.

I can already see that this is going to piss me off something fierce. Another one of those "kill the evil japanese", and "see how they tortured US soldiers". And while this is true :) - it was somewhat more mutual than they would lead you to believe. Americans did some fucked up shit to Japanese POWs as well - some shit that they were not doing to the white Germans that they were fighting hundreds of miles away" - all i'm saying is that that truth better make it into the game or im gonna boycott this crap.

Although I generally dislike WWII campaigns anymore, having played enough to choke a small elephant in my day, the promise of a CoD game with co-op and multiplayer expanded beyond that of even CoD4 does pique my interest. I'll have to wait and see. Treyarch will really have to pull off the game of their life to get me to forgive them for CoD3.

its hard for them to screw up Infinity ward did a great job on the engine, so they'd have to really screw it up to mess up cod4... but i doubt the campaign will be as polished or the multiplayer as addictive as cod4 but thats just me.

whats exciting is the next COD from infinity ward, can you imagine 2 years of dev time from infinity ward with an engine they know front and back, holy crap!

I'm expecting it to be good, but honestly, not as good as Call of Duty 4. Returning to WW2, even if it's in another theater, isn't innovative. The environmental-manipulation and the addition of swimming might be pretty good, but Treyarch aren't going to make our jaws drop like Infinity Ward did with COD4.

I'll probably rent it.
