Call of Duty 5 details: Co-op, vehicles, and more WWII than you can handle photo

The first details of Call of Duty 5: World at War have been unveiled by way of gamesTM magazine. Among the revelations are the introduction of co-op and vehicles, as well as squad-based gameplay.

The game will be released on the PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and also the Wii. The Wii version is said to be developed by another team within Treyarch, and it will support the Wii Zapper (do you need to do much to support a small plastic holster?). A modified CoD 4 engine will be used for all versions of the game, including, apparently, the Wii version. Also on offer will be returning multiplayer perks and new weapons, including a flamethrower that can melt skin and burn grass (thanks, Jack).

The game is going to be set in World War II once again, this time in the Pacific portion of the conflict. It is also promised that this game will be grittier and include scarier enemies than previous titles in the franchise.

I'm all up for some new CoD, but seriously, do we really need another WWII shooter? Was it too much for Treyarch to try something different, or does Infinity Ward have a monopoly on originality? I'm sure it'll be good, but Modern Warfare was such a refreshing change of pace for non-sci-fi shooters that it's almost a shame to have to go back to the Forties.

Dammit, I was hoping for another modern day COD. I'll just wait for more details then.

I am so tired of WW2 shooters. When COD4 came out I thought we were starting to see the last of them. Apparently I was wrong.

potential dehumanised monster-like representation of the japanese!

i just hope with the success of cod4, treyarch get their shit together, cod2 was really great but infinity ward weren't big time then. now they have a reputation to protect and hoopefully they keep a watchful eye over it.

One of the reasons I bought CoD4 in the first place was because it wasn't set in WW2. I'm disappointed they decided to jump back into that era but that doesn't mean it'll be a bad game by any means but I'm no longer particularly interested in the game anymore unless it proves to be that good

I just can't get excited for this. I'd rather go to the future than back to WW2.

"new, seemingly alien fighting force."

I found that while looking through the scans. How original, Treyarch.

If you read the mag, it says:

"Call of Duty: World at War will utilise the Call of Duty 4 engine but the developer has also added various enhancments, such as the ability the burn down buildings and foliage."

"Mutliplayer perks are also back, including some of the favorites from Call of Duty 4, but there will also be new ones that better suit the time period. The game also features new weapons for the series, such as the flamethrower, which according to OXM, can melt the skin off of your enemies and set ablaze grass and wooden buildings."

"Treyarch is promising that this new installment of Call of Duty will be the darkest one yet and are dedicated to making the best game they can. They have had two years of development time, rather than the 11 months they had for Call of Duty 3. And this time they have specific teams working on all the different versions, with the Xbox 360 version acting as the lead."

Try to keep up Jim lol

Didn't enjoy COD4 very much (IMO BF, CS, R6 are all far superior modern shooter series), and I heard the Treyarch games are worse - so I'm not very interested in this one.

Pretty sure it was announced either before or just as COD4 released that for some stupid goddamn reason Activision had handed COD5 back to Treyarch who decided to make yet another WW2 shooter. It sounded like a horrible idea then, and now sounds no less horrible.

They are referring to the Japanese as "Aliens" .....since they are from a different country "and" are not citizens.

This is why we call mexicans without greencards "illegal aliens"

Aliens would make a WW2 shooter interesting in spite of the setting, just like zombies and quake physics and ubergore made Return to Castle Wolfenstein good.
Brahms's Avatar
Brahms at 06/09/2008 09:48
Setting does not make a game. If the gameplay scenario is interesting enough, and touches upon the nature of war without glorifying it (which to me is the real problem with many WWII games), then they'll have my attention.

Why would they even consider doing this? Might as well give it a different name, because there is likely no way in hell this'll show up COD4.

This isn't the European Theater of WWII. The Pacific Front was a lot different, and I can't think of any AAA titles made that were set there.

There was one Medal of Honor game for PC I think, but it was average at best.

Nobody has made a game that really captured what it was like ot be in that jungle. Here's hoping the CoD guys can do it right.

Well, it's at least using the cod4 engine. (I hated the crap engine ported over from the xbox they used on 3) But I could play cod4 for two more years and be happy with it, would hate to have to get it for pc just because the 360 community is only interested in the latest games, good or bad.

If you start burning flesh and making things 'dark' with all these crazy, scary enemies, I think it unneccesary and distasteful in a game based on historic events.

This isn't Call of Duty 5 people.

Infinity Ward was pissed at Treyarch for making 3 because that's what they wanted to do. So they are like "OH HAY NAME THE NEW CALL OF DUTY WORLD AT WAR, OR BIG RED ONE, NOT AN ACTUAL NUMBER SO WE CAN MAKE MODERN 5."

Boom. :D

One thing that confuses me is the comment about 'scarier enemies'.

How much more scarier can they make enemies in a WWII title be without going over the top?

American soldier: 'OHH NOOOOO IT'S A JAPA-ZOMBIE!!'

Japa-zombie: 'Deeeessuuuuuuu... suuuugoiii kawwwaaaiiii...'

Well, I've said before, I won't be touching this.

Why can't they see that WWII games have been flogged t death? Why not just build on Modern Warfare?

Don't they realise that we are sick of using WWII weapons, and shhoting germans and japanese soldiers.

I care little what the link says. I want more Modern Warfare not less.

Maybe we should start swarming Activision's forums and let them know our displeasure. Use some imagination and make a decent new game.

I'm optimistic about thIS. I have only played one FPS set in the pacific and that was rising sun and in fairness WW2 shooters are fun to play its not like this is a permanent change Cod 6 will probably go back to modern warfare. People shouldn't be condemning the game so early

But then, its not IW making it anyway, so i doubt id have picked it up anyway. IW really impressed me with many of the aspects of COD 4, i cant wait for anything they do next.
