Call of Duty 5 details: Co-op, vehicles, and more WWII than you can handle

Call of Duty 5 details: Co-op, vehicles, and more WWII than you can handle screenshot

The first details of Call of Duty 5: World at War have been unveiled by way of gamesTM magazine. Among the revelations are the introduction of co-op and vehicles, as well as squad-based gameplay.

The game will be released on the PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and also the Wii. The Wii version is said to be developed by another team within Treyarch, and it will support the Wii Zapper (do you need to do much to support a small plastic holster?). A modified CoD 4 engine will be used for all versions of the game, including, apparently, the Wii version. Also on offer will be returning multiplayer perks and new weapons, including a flamethrower that can melt skin and burn grass (thanks, Jack).

The game is going to be set in World War II once again, this time in the Pacific portion of the conflict. It is also promised that this game will be grittier and include scarier enemies than previous titles in the franchise.

I'm all up for some new CoD, but seriously, do we really need another WWII shooter? Was it too much for Treyarch to try something different, or does Infinity Ward have a monopoly on originality? I'm sure it'll be good, but Modern Warfare was such a refreshing change of pace for non-sci-fi shooters that it's almost a shame to have to go back to the Forties.

One of the reasons I bought CoD4 in the first place was because it wasn't set in WW2. I'm disappointed they decided to jump back into that era but that doesn't mean it'll be a bad game by any means but I'm no longer particularly interested in the game anymore unless it proves to be that good

If you read the mag, it says:

"Call of Duty: World at War will utilise the Call of Duty 4 engine but the developer has also added various enhancments, such as the ability the burn down buildings and foliage."

"Mutliplayer perks are also back, including some of the favorites from Call of Duty 4, but there will also be new ones that better suit the time period. The game also features new weapons for the series, such as the flamethrower, which according to OXM, can melt the skin off of your enemies and set ablaze grass and wooden buildings."

"Treyarch is promising that this new installment of Call of Duty will be the darkest one yet and are dedicated to making the best game they can. They have had two years of development time, rather than the 11 months they had for Call of Duty 3. And this time they have specific teams working on all the different versions, with the Xbox 360 version acting as the lead."

Try to keep up Jim lol

Setting does not make a game. If the gameplay scenario is interesting enough, and touches upon the nature of war without glorifying it (which to me is the real problem with many WWII games), then they'll have my attention.

There was one Medal of Honor game for PC I think, but it was average at best.

Nobody has made a game that really captured what it was like ot be in that jungle. Here's hoping the CoD guys can do it right.

How much more scarier can they make enemies in a WWII title be without going over the top?

Why can't they see that WWII games have been flogged t death? Why not just build on Modern Warfare?

Don't they realise that we are sick of using WWII weapons, and shhoting germans and japanese soldiers.

I care little what the link says. I want more Modern Warfare not less.

Maybe we should start swarming Activision's forums and let them know our displeasure. Use some imagination and make a decent new game.

@Jonthereaper617: That's actually not a pattern at all. That's a list of quasi-related thing you sorta threw together and claimed it was a pattern. A true pattern would be something more akin to the following:

CoD2/IW = brilliant
CoD3/Treyarch = fail
CoD4/IW = brilliant
CoD5/IW = ???

See? Now you know.

Also, I really don't want to play another WWII shooter. I've liked most of the ones I have played, it's just always so boring after a while. I liked the gritty feel of CoD4 based solely on the fact it was that little bit easier to relate to the weapons and the settings (albeit slightly... I'm no marine stationed in the Middle East or anything, but still).

However, flamethrowers + melting skin = devious amounts of win. I'm torn at this point. I'll hafta wait and hear if it's any good. Definitely not gonna be pre-ordering it like I did with CoD4, that's for sure.

I'd like to see more of the Italian and African theaters along with the Indian and China/Korea theaters. I mean, how many WW2 FPS games have been done about the Pacific Theater? I think only Dirty Dozen and Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. I actually enjoyed Pacific Assault.

Do you think that everyone is avoiding Vietnam, because if everyone starts thinking, they'll draw parallels bewteen it and Iraq?

Why not turn the tables and show the world how fucked the US soldiers were during WWII and the Vietnam war? Hell even the war in Iraq now.

It would be great to have a war game that showed the other side of the story for once. The US troops aren't as nice and peachy as everybody thinks they were against those evil charlies who had no soul.
