The first details of Call of Duty 5: World at War have been unveiled by way of gamesTM magazine. Among the revelations are the introduction of co-op and vehicles, as well as squad-based gameplay.
The game will be released on the PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and also the Wii. The Wii version is said to be developed by another team within Treyarch, and it will support the Wii Zapper (do you need to do much to support a small plastic holster?). A modified CoD 4 engine will be used for all versions of the game, including, apparently, the Wii version. Also on offer will be returning multiplayer perks and new weapons, including a flamethrower that can melt skin and burn grass (thanks, Jack).
The game is going to be set in World War II once again, this time in the Pacific portion of the conflict. It is also promised that this game will be grittier and include scarier enemies than previous titles in the franchise.
I'm all up for some new CoD, but seriously, do we really need another WWII shooter? Was it too much for Treyarch to try something different, or does Infinity Ward have a monopoly on originality? I'm sure it'll be good, but Modern Warfare was such a refreshing change of pace for non-sci-fi shooters that it's almost a shame to have to go back to the Forties.
Dammit, I was hoping for another modern day COD. I'll just wait for more details then.
I am so tired of WW2 shooters. When COD4 came out I thought we were starting to see the last of them. Apparently I was wrong.
Fuck old guns made of wood
potential dehumanised monster-like representation of the japanese!
i just hope with the success of cod4, treyarch get their shit together, cod2 was really great but infinity ward weren't big time then. now they have a reputation to protect and hoopefully they keep a watchful eye over it.
One of the reasons I bought CoD4 in the first place was because it wasn't set in WW2. I'm disappointed they decided to jump back into that era but that doesn't mean it'll be a bad game by any means but I'm no longer particularly interested in the game anymore unless it proves to be that good
I just can't get excited for this. I'd rather go to the future than back to WW2.
dang I wish infinity ward was doing cod5. I played cod3 for about 4 minutes.
I hate treyarch so much.
"new, seemingly alien fighting force."
I found that while looking through the scans. How original, Treyarch.

Bah, humbug!
They should either stick to modern times or go all sci-fi.
Well at least now they can't screw up the modern warfare shooter genre, eh?

[One more time
I am so sick of WWII shooters I could fucking puke. I've been killing Germans, commies and Japanese people for longer than I care to remember. Hell, I've pro'lly killed more Germans than the entire landing parties of Juno and Omaha combined FFS!
if it is as dark as they say its gonna be ill play it. they say you can burn off the skin of the enemy with the flamethrower. thats so wrong it makes me giggly
If you read the mag, it says:
"Call of Duty: World at War will utilise the Call of Duty 4 engine but the developer has also added various enhancments, such as the ability the burn down buildings and foliage."
"Mutliplayer perks are also back, including some of the favorites from Call of Duty 4, but there will also be new ones that better suit the time period. The game also features new weapons for the series, such as the flamethrower, which according to OXM, can melt the skin off of your enemies and set ablaze grass and wooden buildings."
"Treyarch is promising that this new installment of Call of Duty will be the darkest one yet and are dedicated to making the best game they can. They have had two years of development time, rather than the 11 months they had for Call of Duty 3. And this time they have specific teams working on all the different versions, with the Xbox 360 version acting as the lead."
Try to keep up Jim lol
Awesome...totally not buying it. Treyarch blows and needs to go back and make a decent Minority Report game.
You know what I'm sick of?
People that complain about WW2 shooters all the time.
FUCK WWII. Did Treyarch not get the memo about how no one wants to play WWII anymore? In any way shape or form..
After reading the scans. I think it will be fun.
Didn't enjoy COD4 very much (IMO BF, CS, R6 are all far superior modern shooter series), and I heard the Treyarch games are worse - so I'm not very interested in this one.
Darker than the game that had a level where you wait to die of radiation poisoning.
Sweet.
Dust off those copies of Men Behind the Sun!
WW II?? No Thanks.
COD 2/4 = brilliant
Cod3 = fail
Treyarch = fail
Cod5 returning to WW2 =fail
Anyone see a bad pattern here?
Pretty sure it was announced either before or just as COD4 released that for some stupid goddamn reason Activision had handed COD5 back to Treyarch who decided to make yet another WW2 shooter. It sounded like a horrible idea then, and now sounds no less horrible.
if you read that article with the scans, it actually sounds really cool. i wouldn't mind seeing the COD franchise alternate games between WWII and Modern Warfare.
treyarch are idiots and this is stupid.. i like the additions i DISPISE THE WWII move... jesus didnt they realize that COD4 brought millions of new gamers to cod! like me i hate old style warfare give me NEW WEAPONS .... go to the slight future if you want to change timeframes not back to the past... WWII still has BIA for those that want it... where the hells the bad a$$ FPS COD5 future warfare we actually want... not another tired ass WWII game!
ALIEN FORCE WTF! IF THEY TURN THIS INTO A SCIFI SHOOTER ILL DIE! F*Ck Treyarch!
What's infinity ward busy with right now that Treyarch is busy screwing over the COD franchise after it hit what... 14 million units
cchance
They are referring to the Japanese as "Aliens" .....since they are from a different country "and" are not citizens.
This is why we call mexicans without greencards "illegal aliens"
I think WW2 is fascinating, there's alot of cool stuff that can be done with it, and if it is all 'gritty' and shit it could be cool.
Aliens would make a WW2 shooter interesting in spite of the setting, just like zombies and quake physics and ubergore made Return to Castle Wolfenstein good.
Setting does not make a game. If the gameplay scenario is interesting enough, and touches upon the nature of war without glorifying it (which to me is the real problem with many WWII games), then they'll have my attention.
Yet another website where people take the definition of "alien" literally.
Man, you guys really take your WWII shooter hate to the next level. Good for you!
More WW2?
Fuck...We know who won the war and we know who lost it. Can we MOVE ON NOW?
Why would they even consider doing this? Might as well give it a different name, because there is likely no way in hell this'll show up COD4.
Not interested if another WWII shooter. I'll pass.
This isn't the European Theater of WWII. The Pacific Front was a lot different, and I can't think of any AAA titles made that were set there.
There was one Medal of Honor game for PC I think, but it was average at best.
Nobody has made a game that really captured what it was like ot be in that jungle. Here's hoping the CoD guys can do it right.
Well, it's at least using the cod4 engine. (I hated the crap engine ported over from the xbox they used on 3) But I could play cod4 for two more years and be happy with it, would hate to have to get it for pc just because the 360 community is only interested in the latest games, good or bad.
If you start burning flesh and making things 'dark' with all these crazy, scary enemies, I think it unneccesary and distasteful in a game based on historic events.
This isn't Call of Duty 5 people.
Infinity Ward was pissed at Treyarch for making 3 because that's what they wanted to do. So they are like "OH HAY NAME THE NEW CALL OF DUTY WORLD AT WAR, OR BIG RED ONE, NOT AN ACTUAL NUMBER SO WE CAN MAKE MODERN 5."
Boom. :D
I just hope they bring back QTEs for thing like setting c4, reloading, moving forward, etc.
Treyarch FTL.
Yep, Treyarch can make this WWII one. Infinity Ward will make a new Modern one.
I'll buy 'em both. If I can shoot someone it'll be all good.
One thing that confuses me is the comment about 'scarier enemies'.
How much more scarier can they make enemies in a WWII title be without going over the top?
American soldier: 'OHH NOOOOO IT'S A JAPA-ZOMBIE!!'
Japa-zombie: 'Deeeessuuuuuuu... suuuugoiii kawwwaaaiiii...'
Well, I've said before, I won't be touching this.
Why can't they see that WWII games have been flogged t death? Why not just build on Modern Warfare?
Don't they realise that we are sick of using WWII weapons, and shhoting germans and japanese soldiers.
I care little what the link says. I want more Modern Warfare not less.
Maybe we should start swarming Activision's forums and let them know our displeasure. Use some imagination and make a decent new game.
I'm optimistic about thIS. I have only played one FPS set in the pacific and that was rising sun and in fairness WW2 shooters are fun to play its not like this is a permanent change Cod 6 will probably go back to modern warfare. People shouldn't be condemning the game so early
I was so excited about everything... until you said its back in WWII. Fuck that. Its been done, enough is enough already!
But then, its not IW making it anyway, so i doubt id have picked it up anyway. IW really impressed me with many of the aspects of COD 4, i cant wait for anything they do next.
FUCKFUCKFUCK! No more fucking World War 2!
At least we get vehicles, that can't be bad.
The only way i can think of scarier enemies, are crazy japan naked men runing with a katana while yelling: GAYAKA GAYAKA!
So, Treyarch is making it, it's in world war 2, and Treyarch is making it?
That seems like a bad combination.
@Eschatos
Haze has vehicles...
These are the people who made COD3. COD3. Do you even know anyone who didn't hurl their copy off a bridge after playing it?
I'm not even going to say 'pass,' I wont even turning my head to look.
According to the article, Treyarch aims to "explore the darkest corners of WWII," giving the military shooter more of a survival horror flavor by "tackling darker themes" and pitting players against a "new, seemingly alien fighting force."
ALIEN NAZIES?
@deiga-the-semivaliant
JAPA-ZOMBIE's sound amazing, I want them in every game now.
Im ok with this. I have yet to play a wwII game where i fought the japanese, it is actually a nice break from the middle eastern and mexican settings that have been popular since GRAW
IDK about y'all but CoD3 was my favorite WWII shooter. It wasn't a good CoD title but it did have a great SP campaign with colorful characters. I could never get tired of WWII shooters(still playing Airborne), its just the developers who don't take risks and explore other subjects like the Pacific theatre. Because I wanna shoot some Japanese considering they were such assholes.
Count me out.
Co-op and vehicles - Thats all I needed to read and I'm happy
Yeah yeah, its another WWII shooter, big deal. Making dead bodies in 1945 is just as fun as it is in 2008, muwahaha! >:-D
Treyarch sucks. Not going to buy.
IW crew forever!
@Jonthereaper617: That's actually not a pattern at all. That's a list of quasi-related thing you sorta threw together and claimed it was a pattern. A true pattern would be something more akin to the following:
CoD2/IW = brilliant
CoD3/Treyarch = fail
CoD4/IW = brilliant
CoD5/IW = ???
See? Now you know.
Also, I really don't want to play another WWII shooter. I've liked most of the ones I have played, it's just always so boring after a while. I liked the gritty feel of CoD4 based solely on the fact it was that little bit easier to relate to the weapons and the settings (albeit slightly... I'm no marine stationed in the Middle East or anything, but still).
However, flamethrowers + melting skin = devious amounts of win. I'm torn at this point. I'll hafta wait and hear if it's any good. Definitely not gonna be pre-ordering it like I did with CoD4, that's for sure.
As long as i can play as jap's and the game has no bullshit american propoganda it will be alright.
Treyarch? So its going to be crap...
WWII? What a surprise! Thanks, but no thanks. Why does Treyarch even bother anymore?
mmmmm well the Medal Of Honor games attempted the pacific theater, but they were either bad (Rising Sun) or mediocre (the PC one)
so I don't think there has been a GOOD WW2 fps in the pacific theater so maybe this could work
of course let this be the last one in WW2 though, I;d rather have Vietnam then WW2 yet again
Am I reading that right? I thought there was a PS2 version that the Wii version of going to be a port of?
Oh god, not WWII again...
I don't have a problem with WW2 games. My problem with many of them is that I've done too many Normandy, Germany invasions and air drops. I'd like to see more of the Italian and African theaters along with the Indian and China/Korea theaters. I mean, how many WW2 FPS games have been done about the Pacific Theater? I think only Dirty Dozen and Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. I actually enjoyed Pacific Assault.
Even though Call of Duty 3 was a rushed launch PS3/Wii title, I thought it was a refreshing WW2 game. I really enjoyed the QuickTime events along with the boas and jeeps. I also enjoyed the forest and tank battles. They were really great. Call of Duty 4 was great too, but I wish you had been given the option to play with tanks and helicopters.
Come on Treyarch at least pick a new war, how bout some WWI, the germans are still the bad guys in that one and I want to do some trench warfare.
they should make call of duty : pig war
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_War]the pig war wiki
they should make call of duty : pig war
the pig war wiki
WW2 games that focus on killing Jap-o's and Krauts is fun and all. But every other WW2 franchise has done this over 9000 times, t'is gettin' real lame.
As far as I'm concerned, the Call of Dutyseries goes CoD 1 --> CoD 2 --> CoD 4 --> CoD 6.
The games in the series are released about two years apart from one another.
So it looks like Activision is following the Star Trek movie rule. If it's an odd number sequel, you can safely skip it.
call of duty 3 gets a bad rap. it was the same as call of duty 2. the mp was a little diffrent but it was more of the same and more cod2 was good enough for me. as long as this plays just as good as cod4 than i will be happy. i dont know if i will pick it up until the price is dropped but im sure i would be satisfied
The time and technology is right to return to vietnam. There have been very few GOOD vietnam games. Now with the follage abilities of modern shooter engines (Infinity Ward's and Crytek's) you could make a thrilling shooter based in the lush jungles of Vietnam.
Do you think that everyone is avoiding Vietnam, because if everyone starts thinking, they'll draw parallels bewteen it and Iraq?
Treyarch did a surprisingly decent job with CoD3.
I can play as many WW2 shooters as they can crank out. I love 'em.
Just as long as it isn't anything like MoH; Airborne (aka: "Stillborne")
By making it WWII, they've guaranteed that I won't buy it.
If they're gonna make another WWII shooter, at least it's in the Pacific theater. To my knowledge, that part of the war has not yet been done right in the game. I may give it a go.
"Scarier enemies"...what? like Japanese people?
Wow....
Please dont be Medal of Honor:Rising Sun, all over again.
After playing that piece of crap, it feels like no game set in the WWII pacific front can be made not to suck.
Wouldn't it be great if there was a game based on the lives of the Vietnamese or Japanese or German troops during these wars? I'm getting so sick of these patriotic games. Why not turn the tables and show the world how fucked the US soldiers were during WWII and the Vietnam war? Hell even the war in Iraq now.
It would be great to have a war game that showed the other side of the story for once. The US troops aren't as nice and peachy as everybody thinks they were against those evil charlies who had no soul.
3 had vehicles and it still sucked comparatively speaking. I agree with Cheeburga that unless they put the number '5' in the title, it's not the real thing, like Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest.
The world war 2 factor doesn't bother me too much, its that its made by uh, Treyarch.
