Did you really think we were going to make you wait through all of the NFL draft this weekend on TV, just to see the trailer for Activision's new Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare game? Of coure not, here it is at last. Will Infinity Ward be the Hines Ward of warfare shooters? Well, maybe, maybe not.
It looks like it has more varied types of gameplay in store for us, as well as a story that doesn't revolve mindless murdering and load screen text just for the hell of it. I'm sure there will be enough plot to satisfy war fanatics, but for the simpleton soldiers out there, it seems to all boil down to the fact that there's some dude with a funny hat that will probably be hard to kill.
The character models and textures look better than ever, but if you start to nitpick you'll notice that a lot of the environments and objects don't look like anything that puts Call of Duty 3 to shame. Gameplay will make or break Call of Duty 4, and they've got plenty to work with, so I'm excited to see how the game turns out.
At the end of the trailer they reveal the site CharlieOscarDelta (C.O.D., get it?), but it's not fully functional yet. Either we weren't supposed to see this video until later today on TV, or they're getting a lot of traffic right now. Keep checking back later for more information, or feel free to explore through broken images and database errors. Modern Webfare is brutal.

i find it hilarious that ward vomited so much hype a week ago for... this. i honestly didn't see much of a difference in COD2 and 3. hopefully they'll bring something new and tasty.
looks good and if its any indication of the gameplay, it looks like it may be a little more fast paced with enemies jumping out of nowhere to blow the crap out of you. can't wait.
ill stick to rainbow six as my modern day shooter... I dont understand the hype its exactly CoD but with arab people instead of nazi's and M4s instead of thompsons
It's weird to see politics play out in games. CoD4, to me, looks like a more conservative, kill-em-all take on the wars in the Middle East. The Clancy games take this same approach. But Army of One seems to be taking a liberal interpretation of the same battle, i.e., that the battles are being fought for the economic benefit of corportations. I'm sure there are many more examples on both sides.
The funny thing is, that people who fall on one side of the political spectrum might balk at movies that fall on the oposite side, i.e., a conservative might get pissed off at a liberal movie, and vice versa.
But will a gamer care? Will good gameplay cause us to overlook what political messages we consume? I do believe so, and it's interesting to see how the "mindspace", if you will, for games is not as complete and hardened in people as movies, books, news, and TV are. Weird.
Looks pretty damn good, and at least it isn't WWII. I am, however, worried that this game is going to be amazing, and that the next one, which will likely be done by Treyarch, is going to pale in comparison.
I'd rather know more about the game before condemning it, but I don't have any interest in playing a realistic portrayal of an american soldier in the middle east.
glad to see the Call of Duty series going in a different direction than the WWII route. killing Nazi's never gets old but playing a Modern Warfare style game with Modern weaponry (if done right) can be "Kick Ass"
i'm phyked about playing CoD 4
They made a couple Vietnam games a few years back. Nobody cared, and they sold worth crap. So the developers went back to making games about shooting Nazis.
Oh excellent. I was getting sick of all the WWII shit, and was really looking forward to killing some of my fellow Arabs... so double plus!
I got a taste of it in Full Spectrum Warrior (I think?) when one of the final battles took place in a nicely recreated version of my ex-universities main gate (American University of Beirut)... now I get to kill off my brothers in hairyness nextgen style!
I am a huge fan of the CoD series. Really excited for Call of Duty 4. I was expecting it but not in this fashion. Modern Warfare, how fuckin bad ass is that. Thank you for the ownage blog. Kudos to you, my friend.
I can take a guess why this didn't happen sooner...
Movie rental digs like Blockbuster, Hollywood Video and even home-owned mom and pop video stores all operate the same way. They buy their movies from a distributor. They don't just pay for 1 dvd like we do when it releases to the public. They get advance copies crammed full of those 10-minute advertisements. The price on these is based partially on how much that rental will bring in over its lifetime.
Let's take Bareback Mountain for instance. One dvd could cost up to $300/400. The same applies for games, so they probably were cheap bastards and didn't want to fork out extra cash for DS, just the normal consoles.
I thought that method has been dead for years, ever since DVDs became popular and were made directly available to the public at release. I've gone out and purchased DVDs after I rented them, and they're always exactly the same.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Looking forward to this one.
Treyarch nothing against you personally but stick to your spiderman games.. (SPidey 3 game this week )

Still, it's nice to see that after nine or so iterations of Call of Duty, they're changing things up a bit.
COD1 = the best. Not watered down for consoles.
Those of us who love the gameplay associated with the COD series

Oh, and Hines Ward can suck a cock.
Strange. I got a bit of a Cold War vibe, given the russian guy and soviet-looking flag, and the nuclear missile silo.
Damn.
