Call in sick, make muffins: Spring Update hits Xbox 360 today photo

Ah, the sweet sounds of spring. Birds are chirping happily in their trees, lawnmowers in the distance are taking their first laps around the yard, and if you listen closely, you can hear a chorus of exploding frag grenades, or the delicate ring of a sledgehammer as it strikes a zombie's skull.

Yes, fuzzy bunnies, Xbox 360's Spring Update has finally arrived. Along for the ride as promised is Windows Live Messenger, connecting your 360 with PCs and Windows mobile devices around the globe, all under a single friends list. Imagine that. From the press release:

·         Chat via instant messenger with up to 20 contacts in a single conversation, and have up to six different conversations at the same time with people on PCs, mobile phones and other Xbox 360 consoles.

·         Instant message while playing games, listening to music or watching movies or TV shows downloaded from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

·         View at a glance if friends on Windows Live Messenger have gamertags and add them to a unified friends list.

·         Utilize the virtual keyboard on the Xbox 360 to text chat or connect a USB keyboard to the console.  Launching later this summer, the Xbox 360 text-input device accessory will connect directly to the controller to support instant messaging.
Follow the jump for a full list of features that will be available to you later today.
    *  A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.
    * Enhanced family settings features for Xbox LIVE communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.
    * A new Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade lets Xbox LIVE members access the content they seek — whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States) — from one place on Xbox LIVE.
    * Updates to Xbox LIVE Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox LIVE Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox LIVE members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded Tell a Friend capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
    * A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox LIVE Arcade games.
    * New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
    * Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.
    * The name of game in tray is now displayed in the dashboard.
    * When the tray icon is highlighted, a list of achievements, game icon and gamerscore for that game is displayed.
    * Video trick modes are enabled for content that is being progressively downloaded from Video Marketplace.
    * Playback progress bar indicates download completion.
    * Improved skip forward, skip back functionality during video playback.
    * Switchable aspect ratio now available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).
    * Player and friends lists now quickly show session presence information for quick identification of users that are joinable.
    * Support for streaming WM-DRM protected content from a PC
    * Folder view for video content on connected devices
    * H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
    * Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
    * Show folder hierarchy for video content played from all devices.
    * Bookmarks are stored for each video that the user plays remembering the users last location in the file as well as the aspect ratio that the user choose for that file.
    * Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content.
    * Skip forward and backward functionality has been improved to skip to the next or previous chapter. Each video is divided into 10 “chapters” allowing you to quickly skip around video content.
    * The information bar that is turned on via the On Screen Display (OSD) now shows you exactly where you are in the playback of the video file. In addition it will also show for Video Marketplace content how much of the file has been downloaded and where the “chapters” exist in the file.
    * Windows Media protected content (WM-DRM) can now be streamed from the PC to the console. If the WM-DRM license is missing or corrupted then a specific error message is displayed to the user. Bookmarking is also stored for protected content.
    * When the user is in the dashboard and an Xbox 360 game is in the console then the name of the game is displayed in the tray icon of the dashboard. If the user highlights the tray icon then achievements and gamer score are displayed for that game based on the signed in user. Xbox1 games show the name and image of the game.
    * Bookmarks are stored for each video that the user plays. The user can delete all bookmarks but this will reset all bookmark information for every video that the user has played. The bookmark database is exposed in the system/memory/system items
    * When a user selects an item for download from Marketplace then the system will determine if there is sufficient disk space for the item and, if not, will ask the user to delete content on the HDD. The system provides a sorted by size list of videos, game trailers, demos and arcade content to aid the user in the deletion process. The same list of items are also available from within memory so that users can quickly see which items are consuming the most disk space.
    * The console will block the user who attempts to download content onto a storage device that will never have the capacity to store the item without deducting any points associated with the content item.
    * The screensaver is disabled when playing photos from any source

I hope so too...I made an Update Kit just in case. It's got J Allard and Major Nelson voodoo dolls, a prelabeled shipping box , a unopened bottle of Wild Turkey, the complete Johnny Cash Collection cd and I've got 1-800-4my-xbox on speed dial.

So no more downloadable content for Germany. I mean we still didn´t get those new Crackdown agents. Microsoft fails for that.

I thought the Low power mode was supposed to shut off all the fans and run silently wtf.

As if a console would get that hot downloading files and writing them to a Hard drive.

OK, that took all of nine seconds. My 360 is alive and well, stop worrying about the update harming anything.

The new marketplace blade is to the left of the main Live blade, everything is better organized and quicker to navigate. Also, as Nex mentioned, the "play game" bar displays what's in the tray, and I love it.

Won't have a chance to try update until later tonight, but the update looks fierce.

So when is MS sending the Dtoid staff some controller qwerty peripherals? *cough*

It works great for me.

Double plus -

My wireless Logitech USB keyboard works perfectly fine with it and for using MSN Messenger... so you dont have to buy that blooming ugly controller addon if you already have a keyboard.

I thought their wireless was protected via proprietary, which caused the whole guitar hero 2 controllers not being wireless initially.

So anyone care to enlighten me on why a keyboard works?

Anyone that got the update should go to the new marketplace.... the new interface seems to have caused a little advertising problem for some games, where while some may have long descriptions, others are simply tagged.

"Buy this Game!"- Just Cause

"Kush Games" - MLB 2k7

"Sell Description?" FC Instincts Predator

"Sell Text" NFS Most Wanted

"The Ninety Ninth Night is Coming." - (guess)

"1" - Ridge Racer 6

------

Looks like game developers are having to shill out a bit of extra dough to get their text box updated. Wouldn't doubt if they were charging by word/letter.

I actually kind of like having to hit the "X" when an achievement pops up to see what I won. It's like a minigame in and of itself. Also, I'd like to recommend virtua tennis 3 for anyone looking for achievements, its got to have some of the easiest ones I've ever seen. I racked up like 200 in a couple hours last night. only $40 too, and its wicked fun...

Freaking cool. The streaming video works like a champ. Too bad I have to install Zune software to do it, but it plays just fine. I watched the opening of Borat off of it this morning with no problems. Sweet. Tonight, I'm about to mingle porn and my Xbox.

I suddenly have little need for the Wii Browser anymore.

BTW - Anyone on a mac needs to get a copy of Connect360, YESTERDAY. You get free updates and they're promising potential live transcoding in the next version, kinda like TVersity on the XP side of things.

Honestly, I'm happy with MP4 and H.264 support, but whatever.

BTW, I watched Borat transcoded at 640X352 frame size, and the bit rate was 2MB/sec. Looked about the same as the DVD, and was playing back on a 60" DLP at 1080i.

I don't think it was a mistake, infact, I think they REALLY had some fun with it, because the description for DOA4 is quite possibly the best thing ever:

Man, Sony needs to get off their asses and do something like this with the PS3. Having it play only MPEG-4 video, and only certain types of MPEG-4 video, is extremely limiting. I mean, I understand that the idea of supporting something like DivX is sacrilegious, and AVI is a Microsoft format, but maybe they should strike a deal with Apple.

For example, IGN just started putting up (very few) HD-quality videos encoded in MPEG-4. I thought, “Yay! I can put this on my USB thumbdrive and play it on the PS3!” Wrong. When I popped the drive in, the PS3 said that the file was incompatible. I looked at its properties in QuickTime Player, which said that it was encoded in “Apple MPEG-4”. Bah. Screw you, Sony. I hate all these formats. The PS3 supports WMA...why not WMV?

Like Mazda said, "child" accounts can't use messenger.
Which also happened to be the only thing I was looking forward too. They better freaking fix it!
