Calculating the landmass of Azeroth; nothing says sexy like fictional math! photo

Tobold, who recently started mainling methadone to combat his addiction to "playing with his Gnome", has dedicated a lot of time to figuring out the actual landmass of Azeroth, the mythical setting for World of Warcraft.

Did anyone ask for this kind of in-depth geekery? Absolutely not.

Will it postively affect the course of humankind's evolution? It's a detriment, if anything.

Is Destructoid proud to be on the same Internet as this Tobold fellow? You know it!

Tobold, we salute you and your fly calculations. We'd send you a puppy or something, but we're pretty sure you're an evil robot.

(Oh, and if anyone's wondering, Azeroth is about 80 square miles.)

Neat. I've often wondered how big some virtual worlds, and have even mused about setting up a little method like that to do it ... but never did. Oh well.

Isn't 80 square miles kind of small for hundreds of thousands of people at once? I wouldn't really know having never played the game though.

hundreds of thouands don't play in the same world. WoW is sharded. Meaning that only a few hundred play on the same instance of a world or server.

Shouldn't it say area somewhere in that article? I mean 80 square miles is technically a surface area. When you said landmass I thought you might mean actual mass of the land as in "x Kilograms" or something.

Weird. I was under the impression that everyone playing was playing in the same world. That kinda defeats the purpose if they aren't if you ask me. Should be "Worlds" of Warcraft.

@Brain
If the puirpose was to cram half a million users into a single server then being sharded/multiple server would defeat it. However that isn't the purpose at all. No one said that every player in an mmo has to play in the very same server. 2000 players in a single server still accounts for "massively multiplayer"

I suggest if your gonna get hung up on such things you play Eve. They have one galaxy inter-connected so that 20,000+ players interact in the same area.

Actually, I'm more hung up on the idea of paying a monthly fee or playing a game with practically no narrative. Not to say its a bad game, most evidence is to the contrary, its just not my cup of tea. I guess the one thing I thought was cool about it was the idea that everyone was playing together when really you are just playing with a subset of players at any given time. Still massively multiplayer obviously, but it seems less impressive now.
