David Cage has stated that he doesn't intend to make Heavy Rain 2, even though he could potentially score a huge amount of money from a sequel. This is because of something called, "David Cage the brand." He wishes to sell himself, rather than his products.
"David Cage the brand, as you call it, is about not having to make sequels," he said. "It's about creating a brand that is the name of the creator, not Heavy Rain 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 12. Let me be stupid for one second; I'm not in this business to make money. I wrote Heavy Rain because I was excited about it, because there was something to say. Yeah I could make Heavy Rain 2, but I've said what I've had to say about it.
"I don't know what to say. I guess I don't have a long-term strategy for my career. It's certainly not to make as much money as possible though. I see myself as an author, really. I just trust my instinct. I think fans of what I do want me to do that too."
Why does a man who cannot write a good story consider himself an author? Probably for the same reasons he's always pretending a film director, I guess. Anyway, there will be no Heavy Rain sequel, but you can look forward to the next "David Cage Presents An Interactive Movie By David Cage" very soon!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I think it's safe to say David Cage is a talentless, delusional fuckwit who, if we're lucky, will quietly slip away from this industry to waste other peoples' time on shitty arthouse flicks.
Wait I couldn't have read that correctly. Well, no there it is.
Wow.
I'm not a Heavy Rain fan, but I can respect anyone who declines making a sequel where there shouldn't be one, especially when nearly everything as successful as Heavy Rain ends up as a trilogy.
What really urks me is that no one else from DTOID will be reviewing his future games, its obvious that you will, and with the intent of not liking it.
But youre jim, so i cant stay mad at you :3
Its kind of a bummer, because I think doing a Heavy Rain 2 (at least) would serve to bolster his name against a successful brand.
But, I can respect the desire to keep it fresh. I'm definitely looking forward to his next thing, whatever that is. A return to something Omikron-like would be really nifty.
According to vgchartz (not the most reliable source, I know, but it's the best I can do) Heavy Rain sold 1.81 million units worldwide. Whether it deserved to isn't important right now. What's important is that it proved there's a market... a goddamn BIG market, for something unorthodox and imaginative that doesn't involve rolling shotguns and chest-high walls. Shitty personality aside, the video game industry needs MORE David Cages. Not less.
It's kind of like how a man who reports on and writes about gaming news doesn't call himself a Game Journalist.
I'll admit, I liked the game. I didn't love it but I'll admit, it was neat. The music was incredible and at times made me shit my pants, the graphics were top-notch, the voice acting was hit or miss but the story was so full of holes. It was still a good game but hearing him elevate himself like this... ugh.
I fear one day when he falls off that pedestal he's sitting on right now and has the horrible misfortune of interacting with us commoners.
C'mon
The nookie!
C'mon
So you can take that cookie
And stick it up your, yeah!!
Stick it up your, yeah!!

"I find it hilarious that the same developer that was bitching and complaining about used games sales affecting Heavy Rain's gross is now saying, "I'm not in it for the money.""
That was two different people. They're allowed to have opinions independently of one another.
I disliked heavy Rain 'twas an overrated piece of shit, so I support Jim writing all Heavy rain related articles and shit.
Seconded. It bothers me when anyone in the entertainment business feels that there MUST be a sequel to a successful book/film and especially game! We don't need trilogies or even sequels to some of the best games out there. A sequel is only good when there is an expansion of the original concept, not a simple rehash with a slightly different look.
"Why does a man who cannot write a good story consider himself an author?"
Fantastic, David Cage makes Dean Koontz look like Jonathan Swift.
Video games deserve sequels more than movies, invariably the sequel is better when it comes to games. Considering Heavy Rain was more of an interactive movie, this is probably a wise decision (if it actually is his decision).
Nothing against one-note artists (CliffyB, Hideo, etc.) but it's good to know that there are still artists out there who don't want one thing to define them. And we all know that Sterling hates art anyway, so nothing new, just same old potshots.
Your loathing of the man is nothing short of annoying. I get that you're blogging, but I just wish that you could set aside your sly backhanded comments on one man's game that you didn't like.
Yes, the story was rubbish on a logical level. The concept, however, was not and I'll take more rubbish from Cage if he's out to do something interesting and different rather than myself continuing to support a bunch of devs who are all jumping on the coattails of the next big game just because it sold well.
Oh well, maybe Uwe Boll will pick this one up. He makes videogame movies too, you know.
Like the deal Epic Games made with Micro$oft for Gear$ of War?!?!$$$$$$ cash money
Because that doesn't sound dickish at all.
Yup I called a single game overrated, I'm obviously a video game hipster, even though I love and play alot of mainstream games.
Jimmy knows the truth all hail the king............
seriously wtf the game you make love to GOW is a exculsive for xbox with huge cash deal so is halo we all know that GOW4 is coming becoz cliffy loves da money
Says the man that thinks Gears has a good story. It's time to get off of Cage's dick, Jim. Your incessant whining about the man has gotten old.
The part that got my attention was where the talked about having to change the names of his games for US release: "The games I make don’t include a gun. Very often, American marketing departments have a problem with this. They have this image of their market being gun-loving red-necks. It’s completely wrong."
I'm not sure how interested I'll be in his next game, but I'm glad there ARE people who are pushing into new directions. I don't have to like every single game. He was spot-on about the fact that there are too many titles coming out that are just alike.
Seriously, Sterling, get over it.
Quite a different attitude from "quit buying my game used!"
Then you're doing it wrong and you shouldn't be in charge of a lemonade stand, much less a videogame company. Go broke and live off the streets, you bum.
