So according to Wikipedia, these guys haven't made that many games before, the games they have made have reviewed moderate to well, and they're French.
I'm ok with all that but I think it goes a long way in explaining what this Cage fellah's sayin'. Yeah... he thinks his baby's special. That shouldn't surprise any of us. Plenty of developers say "our game features new innovations that innovate and it's going to be great". No one ever says "we're building a sort of run-of-the-mill game without much story but a couple big explosions/plot twists, that seems to sell".
Anyway, that's not important. What is important is that about halfway through reading these comments I started to get sidetracked and think about the word "game". Outside of gaming, which is to say outside of video-gaming, it's a word that comes with certain implications. Namely that you're about to have fun. It's the nature of the game. I suppose that's true for video gaming as well; there's no point when it's not fun.
What about the word video? It's just a modifier here to let us know what kind of gaming we'll be doing. And actually, it's the right word every time because that's how this whole industry is presented to us, so I'm going to switch back to talking about "game". Game isn't right every time, this Cage fellah is on to something here. Nobody calls the movies the going out to the cineplex game, because it's not a game, and if this game isn't a game I think we should call it something else too. I suggest... "interactive movie". It'll be entertaining, like an interaction, and you'll interact with it, like a movie. It's the perfect name and I've come up with it all myself. *takes a bow, and the money, and runs*
Can't wait for Heavy Rain. At the very least it will be one of the most unique experiences of the generation.
thats riduculous over simplification
why do people like MW2? the gameplay is nothing but shooting
why do people like monkey island? the gameplay is just clicking
why do people like SOTC? the game only has 16 enemies
(See origins of Survival horror for details)
I will be confused if stockists put it next to the sandwiches.
If Heavy Rain is like the next evolution of that it will be a really neat gameplay experience that shouldn't be missed, and by all accounts they've dropped all the crazy paranormal/mystic/whatever bullshit stuff from Indigo Prophecy, which was the thing I liked least about it (at least once it starts getting way out there). Well, that and the "stealth" mission somewhere in the middle of the game. I HATE that part.
This game looks fantastic and the people who say it's nothing but QTE's only prove how limited their knowledge of the games industry is. You know.......Maybe Halo 3: ODST could have benefited from being an "Interactive story"........because that way the game may have lasted longer than 10 minutes! You guys are stupid enough to pay $60 for a 10 - minute piece of DLC yet you criticize those that are looking forward to a FULL game? LOL........360 fanboys really are stupid.
It will likely be another highly acclaimed, cult following, but poor sales game - because such a high percentage of "gamers" will only buy CoD, Halo, Madden/ Fifa games.
What? It's not an online multiplayer game? It's not a sports game I can play with my buddies? I have to watch, listen, and understand it? - No way dude, I'm getting a sports game which is only slightly different to last years!
It's a sorry state for the games industry, it's turning into the music industry as far as people only really buy the middle of the road, boring crap that the massive corporations put out.
Doesn't help that you have to drop such a large amount of money on a new release.
I hope I'm wrong, because i think HR looks fucking fantastic. I fucking loved Farenheit (Indigo Prophecy)
Any idea why that game had 2 names? I know one was Europe and one was US, but why was that?
The name was changed in the US and Canada to avoid confusion with the Michael Moore film "Fahrenheit 9/11".
The first thing that i saw on this screenshot were Madison's boobs. Damn, i think that's creepy. It's getting too realistic.
Hey, maybe that's what Cage is all about!
Just be ready to support Heavy Rain when it comes out...this is the kind of shit which could attract a whole new wave of gamers (HARDCORE ones, not casual ones)
In context tho I think the developer suffers from a similar condition to a lot of people so engrossed in a creative endeavor. Just like every band that says: "We don't really fit into any genre, we are our own original style", everybody wants to believe that what they are creating is on the cutting edge, will push the medium, sets new standards and has NEVER been done before. To a certain degree he's probably right.
But in the end it's semantics, its like Sony bringing out a new TV that's so good they say "This is no longer a TV, more than a TV, its actually its a Visual and Sound Entertainment Delivery System". Yet it will be sold alongside regular TVs just like Heavy Rain will be sold in the Video Game isle.
FYI: I played these kinds of games starting with Zork. No graphics, only text. And you had to guess what the game wanted you to type to actually progress. In those days a game that could take a minimum of 45 minutes to complete would take an average player a few months to get through without a walkthru. Think about the progress being made here, instead of insta-hating.
This sarcastic remark was brought to you by the letter 8 and by the number Z.
With QTE's, the switch between the game's other mode, be it real-time exploration or menu-driven narration and the QTE become a conceit that allows for a certain amount of perceived laziness on the part of the designer. If you're only going to allow the player to control the game and a set, scripted, moment and disconnect their actions at other times, playing a QTE becomes an exercise in not failing a cutscene.
Not failing a cutscene doesn't bring a lot of satisfaction to most people. Hence most people's distaste for the QTE as an obsolete, rather than forward-thinking game modality.
That said, I'm still curious to see what this game does with the QTE problem.
And it is a problem, whether you want to deride those who think it is or not.
