C&C4 goes WoW: will require the Internet to play photo

Like Maple Story, Command & Conquer 4 will require an Internet connection to play.

Expanding on a previous message board Q&A session by Electronic Arts Redwood Shores’ Jimmy Feasel, community manager Aaron Kaufman told Command and Conquer DEN readers that C&C 4 will require players to be online constantly, mostly because of the “player progression” stuff we’ve been teased with.

"As of right now, you need to be online all the time to play C&C 4," Kaufman told readers. "This is primarily due to our 'player progression' feature so everything can be tracked. C&C 4 is not an MMO in the sense of World of Warcraft, but conceptually it has similar principles for being online all the time. While some may be taken aback by this, we've been testing this feature internally with all of our world-wide markets."

Whoa. And you thought Starcraft LAN players got the shaft. Like Starcraft II’s LAN-lessness, we have a feeling this has something to do with DRM more so than uploading statistics to a server. We’ll check it out for you.

If this has to do with DRM... I WILL KILL SOMEONE.

...and then 2 days after it is released a crack gets rid of this need, the pirates win and then 6 months later new headline 'C&C4: No Longer Needs Internet w/ New Expansion'.

What a fail idea. Why can't they implement an offline mode sans stat tracking? This is absolutely stupid and will almost certainly hurt sales. There are a whole bunch of things that can prevent someone from being able to log in and authenticate whenever they want to play. As for piracy, there will be a workaround anyway.

What the fuck? There is no offline or single player portion of the game? Gay.

As if a pirate hack won't be released within a few days anyway... Isn't it said that necessity is the mother of all invention?

Being forced to stay online doesn't mean there isn't a single player campaign. Come on.

Chronic Logic: There will be all the usual single player campaign and story stuff, but you can't play the game without being online and connected to EA's servers.

As with the Starcraft 2 LAN "drama" I don't see that the problem is, it just seems like a log of needless nerd rage to me. I mean most everyone is online now days, weather you're playing the single player campaign or doing a multi-player skirmish with friends does it matter that much that you have to be logged in to play?

No big deal. Come on guys, who doesn't have the internet these days? If you have a machine that is capable of running C&C4, then you probably have the internet. The only way I can see this be a problem is if the reason does have something to do with DRM.

"While some may be taken aback by this, we've been testing this feature internally with all of our world-wide markets."
-Don't worry guys, they've been testing it........That's right. We have no need to fear because this is being tested. Does this mean that previous games weren't tested? Isn't this kind of a mandatory thing? He didn't even mention if the testing had been positive in a fact kind of way.

This isn't going to work. Instead of trying to trick gamers into using DRM they just need to give gamers a reason to have DRM. The perfect example of this is Steam. Steam is DRM but no one really bitches about it since: 1) You don't have to put your disc in everytime and 2) More importantly, you can play it on any system, any time, from anywhere, forever.

If you give gamers real reasons to support your DRM then we'll buy it. Some crappy excuse like what these guys are saying doesn't cut it though.

And why does the gaming industry think they're above the DRM line? Music and movies don't have DRM. In fact, pretty much every other product lets you sell it used if you so wish. So I'm pretty tired about video game companies thinking they're special on this subject.

I'd like to see how some of you fuckers that think this kind of thing is okay would react if Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo decided that your console had to be online if you wanted to play a game.

This is some bullshit, right here. I don't know if this is DRM related or not, and don't much care. The fact that it's supposedly MMO related even if only tangentially is what is fucking pissing me off. Even if the extent of it is just "player statistics" or whatever, leaderboards and all that useless crap, I don't give a shit about any of that. If it still has a single-player component that isn't just tacked on as an afterthought and which doesn't suck ass, then I might still check this out. Otherwise, I'll pass.

Copy/paste from another thread about this:

"God fucking dammit, why does everything have to go fucking MehMehOh these days? Shit."

@Timmeh: My 360 IS online 24/7. So what the fuck is the difference?
Timmeh's Avatar
Timmeh at 07/15/2009 11:51
Well for you no difference I guess but you don't represent everyone.

I'm sure it would start making a difference if your router broke, there was a problem with your connection, your ISP had some issues, Microsoft's authentication servers were overloaded, their network was down for maintenance or a hundred other things that stopped you being able to connect.

You guys obviously never played Endwar (except those who will reply to me saying it sucked). That games had a persistent online mode that was a great idea.

And I can understand that it would be a bad idea for a console game. But if your PC isn't connected to the internet, then why do you have a PC in the first place?
ZethUK's Avatar
ZethUK at 07/15/2009 18:51
I don't want to start an argument but could someone enlighten me here please? I am someone that doesn't have a problem with this I need to ask. Are people mainly annoyed because they won't be able to play if they have internet problems? Because I can get that to some extent. Any other reasons I don't really understand.
