Bye bye Microsoft Points?

Bye bye Microsoft Points? photo

Microsoft Points. How I loathe those little buggers. I've wanted to pay for stuff on Xbox Live with a credit card for quite some time, and if the latest gossip is to be believed, that fateful day may soon be upon us. Quotes attributed to Microsoft's Scott Austin state that the new "Games on Demand" service will eschew MS Points in favor of sensible retail prices. Could this hint at a bright new age where Microsoft's Monopoly Money is thrown on the scrapheap where it belongs?

If you love MS Points for some sick and twisted reason, there will still be an option to pay with them. Sensible and well adjusted people, however, will be able to pay directly and simply with a credit card. So far, there is no word on whether this option will be made available to all products on the Xbox Live service, but if it works out well for Games on Demand, perhaps this will be the first nail in the coffin for the wretched things.

Microsoft also discussed the new rating system for games. It'll be a lot easier to find quality titles on Xbox Live, as they will get a five-star rating. Of course, since most people can't tell quality gaming from puerile sh*t (just check your local videogame sales charts), it might not be too trustworthy. Still, it's a fresh step in a new direction, and you can't say no to that.

I guess the one advantage to using points would be those rare occasions where you can buy Microsoft Point cards at a discount and trade real money for a greater value of space money.

MS points rule because you can buy them on Amazon and avoid paying state sales tax.

SO THERE!

Ummmm...I have my card details stored with my account and can buy points/renew my subscription at the convenient click of an A button.

I'll be interested to see if the currency difference(s) are considered in the new pricing.

I think Ms points are a good method to pay because not everyone has a creditcard!

SC, mate...Trophies are a copy of achievemnts. Literally.

Paying by card is fairly standard practice across *all* forms of buying.

Wouldn't mind that. I would also not mind having to buy a certain amount of credit instead of just what I'm buying. Because if I'm buying a $7 piece of content, I really hate being forced to pay for $10 in credit.

The bummer is that MS points are region locked if you buy the cards.... and since I moved from the UK after setting up my Xbox Live account, I've had to get my brother to buy cards and post them over.

@Sir
All MS has to do is have the "$" still equate to a gift card, like how Nintendo does it. Win-Win :-D

I'm not charged tax when using MS so I'm hoping it remains an option. Sure sometimes you end up with oddamounts of points left over (like the 200 I currently have) but eventually I'll have a use for them.

Yeah, I prefer the points becuase of the sales that retailers occasionally have. I remember last year when I had t buy Castle Crashers, Braid, and Bionic Commando within a one month time frame. Luckily target had a $5 off sale on the $20 cards about a week before the "Summer of Arcade". I bought three so I had enough for those and even the equivalent of one free game left over.

I don't like this, because if this is the only option to buy Games On Demand, then I just know they're gonna start charging $20 for the Americans, and then £20 for the English.

Being able to pay by debit card would be nice, I have a habit of seeing credit as free money and would probably buy everything on marketplace because it's there and I'm a retard. OH WAIT!

I would honestly buy so much more crap on XBLA if it was this way. I hate buying points and getting stuck with like 100 points and nothing to do with it.

FUCKING.

FINALLY.

Fed up of buying 160MSP songs from Rock Band until I have 150MSP left. Thus charging me ANOTHER fiver for the damn things.

Hate to say it, but this is kind of old news. It was confirmed by Marc Whitten while he was still at E3. http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxvoices/archive/2009/06/01/a-letter-from-marc-whitten-xbox-live-e3-2009.aspx

Microsoft and Nintendo should be shot in the face for the idiotic points thing in the first place. It's an old business strategy to try to get people to spend more on your products than they would have otherwise, and I absolutely detest it.

I picked up 16, yes 16 M$ 1600 point cards for $5/each last year. So for me, M$ points rule.

Like others said, there are rare occasions when you can essentially buy money for less money, thanks to MS Points. Like the time when I bought $20 in MS Points for $5 from Target. That was magical. It was also why you wouldn't have heard me complaining about the price of the first Penny Arcade game.

Also, like others pointed out, you can buy them online without sales tax. I can also buy them from Best Buy and they go towards my Gamerzone/Reward Zone totals...it's not much, but it adds up and it's certainly more than if I just used my credit card.

I don't mind the points, they make me feel less bad about the money I spend, it being in a form that is unclear as to it's value in real money.

Wait, that's what they want me to feel!

Trophies copy achievements. Badly.

Microsoft points never get discounted here so buying with points or with my credit card is pretty much the same thing for me so...meh

At least Nintendo has a 1:1 point ratio: so it's not unbearable.

Hey guys, I know as well as anyone how completely arbitrary, frustrating, and pointless Microsoft Points are, but I don't think any of you realize how perfect they are for someone like me (Under 18, unemployed, with no credit card).

Honestly, sometimes those little fuckers are a Godsend. That and Pre-paid cards are the only way to give someone points as a gift.

I prefer the MS points. Well at the very least I prefer the option to use the simple pre paid card. If they still give the option to buy a "points" card to use instead of a credit card then fine.

Also isn't a huge amount of Live users under 18 with no credit card? I'm guessing a large amount of that group has been using points.

I'll stick with MS points as my creditcard won't match my fake American XBL address. Unless it is somehow tied to the NYC public library. Plus, I like buying point cards at exchange rate lowpoints.

MS should always consider that not everyone has a credit/debit card. Why not offer both options in order to obtain points?

It seems that MS never consider the fact that cutting off some gamers is still a problem, just like with Live and what you can access on it.

Wait, so the reasony why MS used MS points is because of tax reasons?

i am one of those sick, twisted individual who prefer ms pts. why? because once upon a time, i used a credit card to buy like 2000 ms pts, and they saved my cc info on file. at one point i stopped playing xbox live for a while and let my 13 months live subscription went to waste, and after my 13 month expired, i was wondering why i was still on gold membership. shortly after that, my account got disabled due to the fact that i failed to pay my 1 month auto renew subscription that i clearly never sign up for, i know cause i only use cc for ms pts. i got disable on my first auto renew because my cc expired. i ask them to take out auto renewal, and they gave me an extremely hard time before they actually do it, and that took 2 weeks. i mean i didnt plan to store up pts with prepaid if i didnt need it. so since then, i buy prepaid and urge everyone to do the same. and that was 2 yrs ago. unless they do non-ms pt prepaid, i will be stuck with ms pts.
this is the first time that i disagree with Jim. no worry, i will always come to Jim for Koei's Warriors game coverage.

I like this. It quite annoys me that a pack of 3 rock-band songs costs 440 points, or 3 separate songs costs 480 points. Since you can only buy points in multiples of 500, that leaves me with either 60 or 20 points that are useless, until eventually (several months later) they build up so i can buy another song... i think i've got 120 at the moment.

I don't like the pretend-money that points represent, but I prefer them over linking my credit card to my account. I used it to buy points before, and it was a pain in the ass to get Microsoft to remove it. I did so after hearing a couple horror stories where 360's were stolen and the original owners were charged for things purchased by the thieves.

Maybe they can just change the pseudo-exchange rate...100 points = $1.
