Buy Xbox 360 Elite, get $50 rebate photo

Microsoft wants your money, but not all of it. Big MS is upping the ante in the price drop battle by offering a $50 rebate to anybody in the United States who purchases an Xbox 360 between now and October 5.

This certainly has to be a response to the PlayStation 3 price cut, with Microsoft attempting to undermine Sony's efforts to put more PS3s into homes this Winter. The rebate makes the entry cost for an Elite a rather attractive $249, which certainly makes it cheaper than the $299 PS3. Will the plan succeed? That remains to be seen.

If a casual buyer looks at the best model 360 for the price of a game less than the arguably worst model ps3, that is appealing to the casual buyer, it wont effect informed gamers though

I think they are trying to pickup their NPD numbers. Wouldn't it be kinda strange if the PS3 outsells the 360 in a month that new Halo shipped? Then you have the Wii possibly going to $199 its like they are getting it in both ends.

Just think: What if Microsoft played this properly and gave the 360 a $100 price cut before Sony could announce theirs? From a sales perspective, they probably would have won the console war right there.

this seems that it will confuse things. also really short lived to mess with the NPDs. Also the percentage of people that follow through with rebates is very small. Yeah because now you can spend the rebate on a free year Live Gold.

They'll undoubtedly move a few extra systems, sure, but I dunno... this seems kinda half-baked to me. Ignoring the embarrassingly short and oddly-placed time frame (goodness knows how infamous late September is for those mass holiday purchases), if they really wanted to get potential customers' attention, I think they'd want to put out a commercial or have Gamestop pester all their call-in inquirers about it.
