This is fantastic and the final nail in the coffin of the idea I had of buying it on both my PC and Xbox 360. Psht.
I usually want to say something snarky here, but dammit I've got nothing. Valve is rapidly approaching Nintendo-levels of love in my book, and I've been with them since the NES.
So Portal 2 on the PS3 is only the "best version" because of steam support? Glad I'm not missing anything. I can't see PS3 users really wanting these feature either, because if they cared about steam, they would probably play on PC.

A) The PS3 version has split-screen
B) It comes with another copy of the game
C) You're relying on the idea that all PS3 owners have enough disposable income for a gaming computer.

In all honesty since I'm mainly a console guy the free PC/Mac version of the game doesn't interest me.
However the cross platform gaming aspect does. That is pretty neat. I just wished they had done this (or Microsoft had allowed them) for L4D on the 360/PC. Seriously, that would've been awesome.

Besides what VGFreak1225 said, it's also the best version because you can play cross-platform with PC users. And "I can't see ps3 users really wanting these features" makes absolutely no sense because you don't even know all of the features included with Steamworks for PS3.

@VGFreak: if you consider that a gaming computer able to run in full hd any Valve game costs roughly like a PS3, the C part of your reasoning isn't excessively valid. (Amd x245+geforce 240gt. My gaming/Minecraft rig.)

Holy fuck. I'm buying the PS3 one now, then. This way, I link up and I have the game on two platforms. Or, I can return the game at a later date and still have a PC version.
This is a classic "we thought it was a good idea". PS3 is telling you to go to a different platform and play a game. Was Portal that awful on the ps3 that they couldn't give you that instead? the game DID come out for ps3 after all(not to any huge success). They could have patched it up and shipped that with Portal 2 but for some reason sending you to another platform is better? bad move Sony, way to take the cheap route instead of fixing your own games.

To me this is pretty amazing news. I have real life friends I'd play split screen with, and online friends I'd play online on PC with, deciding which version to get was a difficult decision. I hope many more games follow this.

this is big news for bridging gaps in gaming...glad to see valve is also innovating in the business of gaming...they can do no wrong in my eyes. would love it if this came to the 360 (no ps3 currently) but I'm very excited nonetheless to see it happen anywhere in the industry.
Wow, this is fucking awesome. Being a multi platform gamer, the whole cop out of "you're buying a licence, not a disc" its bullshit when you wanta game on another platform.

Smart move to encourage people to buy the PS3 version rather than pirate it or rent it and rip it to HDD.

well, PSN sucks. Valve may as well take over with Steamworks as the console's online gaming platform.
Having just started pc gaming after owning a ps3 since the Christmas of its release, this is pretty good news for me.

And once again, Valve continues being awesome. I wasn't that much interested in Portal 2 in the first place, but if the EU version has the same features I'm definitly buying the PS3 version.
