Apparently not content with having you buy bottles of Mountain Dew to get Mass Effect 2 DLC, it seems EA and BioWare have gone one step further, bundling download content packs for Mass Effect 3 with its official line of action figures. Store listings note that each of the eight Mass Effect 3 figures - ones for Miranda, Garrus, Legion, Tali, Mordin, Grunt, Default Male Shepard, and Thane - will come with a code that can be redeemed for DLC on the North American Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game. No word was given regarding the PS3 version.
According to the BioWare store page, the content itself will be "slightly randomized during the registration and could include powerful new weapons and new characters. The pack could also include character boosters, weapon modifications, and weapon upgrades to make your multi-player squad stronger." I guess that "slightly randomized" bit should keep folks from just copying the codes and disseminating them, which was exactly what happened with the Mountain Dew tie-ins.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Ok so we have them get soda to drink during the game to get DLC. Then we make them go to different retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Gamestop to get DLC, but we only make the best thing available on Origin to make it look better by comparison. Then we make them play a demo for an entirely different game to get some more content! Then we make their kids buy toys for content! By the time they're done they spent $500 on Mass Effect and are hooked on soda!
I mean, most of this stuff is negligible and will be sold for ~$10 a year down the line like ME2 did, but there's a limit! C'mon!
Every one of Bioware's games since the EA takeover has had shill qualities, down to the "Geek Goddess" Felicia Day live action Dragon Age tie-in.
Dear God, EA is shameless regarding piecemealing their games into parts for more money.
Figures look great, but there's no doubt in my mind that the "DLC" is just a little piece of material that was created with the game budget, could be in the game as an unlockable, but will be sold separately for additional money, at the additional cost of customers.
As it stands it's 137.99 for a set of two figures, 79.99 for the CE...and that's not even touching all the various retailer specific preorders. Sidenote: I will be in the market for non-amazon preorder codes, and probably these figure codes as well.
Mass effect 3 will be a 3 part game. Each installment will cost $60, and will feature an exclusive version of the story that differs wildly depending on where you buy it.
Also, only by preordering all three from three different chains will you have the option to unlock a super secret SET of endings provided you have the codes from all the action figures released domestically and the chibi action figure given away as a cereal prize in Slovakian corn flakes boxes.
Everyone who fails to do this will have to buy the Ending DLC for an additional 30 bucks to even see the ending. Everyone just gets a big question mark displayed on screen for the second half of the third discs game until the DLC is purchased.
Da f*ck Bioware:
On the other hand, I was planning on getting Tali (and FemShep and Liara if they ever get made) anyways, so I'm pissed that the PS3 is getting excluded entirely. Dick move guys. The platform should at least be allowed to enter your shitty raffle.
This may end up causing them even more issues with people who'll make code generators or those who'll just go to ebay or whereever to specifically buy a bunch of overpriced codes, rather then spend cash on the actual product.
People will find a way to cheat the system and piss them off, or they'll find a way to make more money from it then them and piss them off.
So, yeah, great idea guys.
This has been going on forever, especially with toys, but the second it relates to video games it's suddenly unacceptable and we're clearly paying 60 dollars for an inferior product because we don't have some random weapon to use in a mode no one will likely play.
I have no doubts ME3 will be awesome, but there's gonna be a shitton of EA bullshit to wade through.
Huh? I'm not sure where you are getting that amount from, but it's way off. A set of 4 figures is $75.00. Both sets (8 figures) would set you back $150.
It is not your fault Bioware, its me. I feel like we need to see other people. I am telling you I do not know how that indie game got on my drive! Well...you may want to get yourself tested though...
And why so much hostility to BioWare? You people act as though we HAVE to buy them now that they have DLC! Sure I am not a fan of this either but it's not like they are giving away addition story missions that actually matter. (this argument will be taken back however if BioWare releases an actual character in it, and I mean a real character not Kasumi.Where I can't even talk to you with my speaking wheel!) haha no but this is also cool because people, like myself, get rewarded for buying something I would of already bought. :)
Aside from that, this sounds pretty awesome. I liek the random part.
I think Bioware and EA can go fuck themselves.
By the way, the source link doesn't seem to be right.
It's all a boatload of shit they try and sell to anyone that's interested.
Bahh..I hate EA anyhow.
There is a cause and effect here, just as with piracy.
