Buy Mass Effect 3 action figures, get some DLC photo

Apparently not content with having you buy bottles of Mountain Dew to get Mass Effect 2  DLC, it seems EA and BioWare have gone one step further, bundling download content packs for Mass Effect 3 with its official line of action figures. Store listings note that each of the eight Mass Effect 3 figures - ones for Miranda, Garrus, Legion, Tali, Mordin, Grunt, Default Male Shepard, and Thane - will come with a code that can be redeemed for DLC on the North American Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game. No word was given regarding the PS3 version.

According to the BioWare store page, the content itself will be "slightly randomized during the registration and could include powerful new weapons and new characters. The pack could also include character boosters, weapon modifications, and weapon upgrades to make your multi-player squad stronger." I guess that "slightly randomized" bit should keep folks from just copying the codes and disseminating them, which was exactly what happened with the Mountain Dew tie-ins.

Damn they're expensive. Then again anything over £5 is expensive to me.

It took forever for me to get Mass Effect 2's toys and then they canceled them aftawards! I don't think I wanna go through that again. (note: the header images is those figures)

EA Board Room (aka hell):

Ok so we have them get soda to drink during the game to get DLC. Then we make them go to different retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Gamestop to get DLC, but we only make the best thing available on Origin to make it look better by comparison. Then we make them play a demo for an entirely different game to get some more content! Then we make their kids buy toys for content! By the time they're done they spent $500 on Mass Effect and are hooked on soda!

I mean, most of this stuff is negligible and will be sold for ~$10 a year down the line like ME2 did, but there's a limit! C'mon!

Every one of Bioware's games since the EA takeover has had shill qualities, down to the "Geek Goddess" Felicia Day live action Dragon Age tie-in.

Figures look great, but...

Dear God, EA is shameless regarding piecemealing their games into parts for more money.

Figures look great, but there's no doubt in my mind that the "DLC" is just a little piece of material that was created with the game budget, could be in the game as an unlockable, but will be sold separately for additional money, at the additional cost of customers.

I just want to give Bioware some money, and get all my items in ME3, is that possible? Can we work that out somehow please? 100 bucks? 150?

As it stands it's 137.99 for a set of two figures, 79.99 for the CE...and that's not even touching all the various retailer specific preorders. Sidenote: I will be in the market for non-amazon preorder codes, and probably these figure codes as well.

I wonder if it would be too bold to make the following proclamation:

Mass effect 3 will be a 3 part game. Each installment will cost $60, and will feature an exclusive version of the story that differs wildly depending on where you buy it.

Also, only by preordering all three from three different chains will you have the option to unlock a super secret SET of endings provided you have the codes from all the action figures released domestically and the chibi action figure given away as a cereal prize in Slovakian corn flakes boxes.

Everyone who fails to do this will have to buy the Ending DLC for an additional 30 bucks to even see the ending. Everyone just gets a big question mark displayed on screen for the second half of the third discs game until the DLC is purchased.

Even though all this content is multiplayer stuff, which I have no interest in playing, this is still a pretty ridiculous way to spread marketing. The only people that are going to buy the figures are fans of the series, so EA's not trying to convince new people to get ME3, but to guilt current fans into trying to get all the manifold randomly distributed bits of withheld game, at great expense and with a chance of not even getting all of it even if all of the figures are purchased. This strategy worked for Skylanders because that game was built with toy crazy kids in mind. Each individual piece is cheaper and has a distinct function. The ME figure DLC only abuses the existing fan base by demanding another $140 bucks to get the current 8 poorly selected figures for a chance of being able to play all of the game. It's not just bad business, it's insulting.

On the other hand, I was planning on getting Tali (and FemShep and Liara if they ever get made) anyways, so I'm pissed that the PS3 is getting excluded entirely. Dick move guys. The platform should at least be allowed to enter your shitty raffle.

While I hate to say this is a good idea, its still a cash grab. And that whole "slightly randomized" bit is complete bullshit...

This may end up causing them even more issues with people who'll make code generators or those who'll just go to ebay or whereever to specifically buy a bunch of overpriced codes, rather then spend cash on the actual product.

People will find a way to cheat the system and piss them off, or they'll find a way to make more money from it then them and piss them off.

So, yeah, great idea guys.

Yeah, how dare Bioware include some throwaway DLC for free along with an action figure?

This has been going on forever, especially with toys, but the second it relates to video games it's suddenly unacceptable and we're clearly paying 60 dollars for an inferior product because we don't have some random weapon to use in a mode no one will likely play.

Well, I knew it was the end of Bioware the moment EA bought them. It would be nice if EA wouldn't go out of their way to prove me right with this stuff and just keep it to mediocre cash in sequels like Dragon Age 2.

I know in the world of DLC everyone feels they are owed everything there is to a game when they purchase it, but as a collector of figurines and video games, this is AWESOME!

EA purchasing Bioware is the worst thing to happen to that company. EA needlessly complicates everything and they're gonna bleed the company dry.

I have no doubts ME3 will be awesome, but there's gonna be a shitton of EA bullshit to wade through.

@SteamPunk Jin: ""As it stands it's 137.99 for a set of two figures, 79.99 for the CE..."

Huh? I'm not sure where you are getting that amount from, but it's way off. A set of 4 figures is $75.00. Both sets (8 figures) would set you back $150.

I'm a little confused here... Mostly at DarkCloud (amazing games by the way and we need a DC3!) but if the Mass Effect 2 figures that is pictured there cancelled, then why do I have all 4 in my room looking beautiful?
And why so much hostility to BioWare? You people act as though we HAVE to buy them now that they have DLC! Sure I am not a fan of this either but it's not like they are giving away addition story missions that actually matter. (this argument will be taken back however if BioWare releases an actual character in it, and I mean a real character not Kasumi.Where I can't even talk to you with my speaking wheel!) haha no but this is also cool because people, like myself, get rewarded for buying something I would of already bought. :)

Knowing how EA likes to sneak PS3 owners some DLC, this may all be for free or at a discounted price on the PS3 version. I'm sick of seeing EA's persistence on DLC to the extent that they plan it months before a game's launch. But I bet that DLC is like, 1/4 the price of those action figures, if even that.

By the way, the source link doesn't seem to be right.

It shows that DLC really is worthless, if they bundle it to sell plastic dolls...so the margin of profit is in the plastic doll, not the DLC.

It's all a boatload of shit they try and sell to anyone that's interested.

Bahh..I hate EA anyhow.

The reason EA and Bioware are doing this is because you people can't be trusted with online codes. Look at the Dr. Pepper promo where assholes just went around distributing the codes to anyone and everyone without a proof of purchase.

There is a cause and effect here, just as with piracy.
