Buy Guitar Hero 5, get advanced copy of GH: Van Halen free photo

Activision really wants you to buy Guitar Hero 5, and it wants to give you Guitar Hero: Van Halen... for free. Before it's even on store shelves.

The publisher has announced a ridiculous offer -- buy specially-marked copies of Guitar Hero 5 in September, and it'll send you an advanced copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen. The catch here is that this is a mail-in offer, and you'll have to wait up to six weeks to receive your copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen. But considering that game isn't set to hit shelves until December 22, you should quiet your whining.

There's no doubt that this is a fantastic deal, but it does call into question the quality of Guitar Hero: Van Halen. Not only have Activision been quiet on the game for long after its official announcement prior to E3, but now they're giving it away for free. This should be interesting.

...Quality or otherwise, free is free. I'll jump all over this. One less franchise cash-in to spend 60 bucks on.

I agree, free is good either way.

I remember back when I got my Genesis with the first Sonic they had an offer to get the second one for free through a mail in deal.

Ah, memories.

Does this offer apply to Canadians? If so, this would be the only way I'd nab a copy of GHVH to be honest.

More like 2 games for the price of 7.

Not to be naggy, but people should just Get Frets on Fire X and fuck GH.

IMO.

If you look at the official rules, it can be redeemed online. You don't have to mail it.

Nice offer, but I'm still going to pass on buying this for now. Down the road (say a year from GH5's release), I'll easily be able to pick it up for less than $100 and probably get Van Halen for a steal.

Hopefully "specially marked" doesn't mean the full band kits. If not, I'll be all over this!

The site has pictures or just the game itself as well as the whole kit, but if it is limited to the whole kit'n'kaboodle, then I'll pass.

You sons of bitches, this isn't fair. How am I supposed to hate you when you're practically giving me $60? (I plan to immediately "return" Van Halen to Wal-Mart.)

Is Van Halen even relevant in this day in age of music? Why do a Guitar Hero game dedicated to them. It's Areosmith all over again, a game featuring a bunch of old rockers.

There are so many bands out there today that can school both of those bands. But I am glad more technical bands are not whored out to Activision and remain dedicated to their art.

Well at least now I can feel a little better about caving in and buying another Guitar Hero.

They would have to give me $200 to buy GH5. Fuck you Activision. I hope Kotick trips and lands eyeball first on an awl.

Yea the guy is a douche bag, but I'm still picking the game up. The people who actually put time into making the game are probably decent people. Doesn't seem fair to punish them over one dude.

@DeadPlasmaCell:

No. The people at Neversoft suck. I hate that company. They bastardized skatboarding with the Tony Hawk franchise and ruined Guitar Hero. I will never buy another Neversoft product. I bought GH1 and GH2 but then Neversoft ruined GH3 and further ruined the GH name by releasing 5 GH games a year. It's brutal. Fuck them.

@wolverine

While Aerosmith and Van Halen may not be the best choices for "technical" bands in Guitar Hero, or any music game, your comment was nonetheless ignorant and incredibly moronic.

Also, what KIDA26 and Slick Icarus II said.

The only problem with Frets on Fire is the lack of graphics and more than anything the lack of quality control on the custom songs. Some of them are just atrociously bad. I mean, buying games like these at least assures you the songs are playable.
Plus static backgrounds are pretty lame, albeit it means it can run on anything.

Take THAT used game sales! Absolutely ingenious.

I told my roommate if he springs for GH5, I'll get Van Halen. Hope he goes for it.

What Rockefellow and, by extension, KIDA26 and Slick Icarus II said.

Besides even if I were intending to purchase GH5 I'd trade in Van Halen to pick up something else. No disrespect to the band - they're just not my thing.

@KIDA26: Neversoft only does that because Activision tells them to. If a developer has to put out a game every two weeks, it's normal that the quality goes down the shitter.

Oh, and if I see this right, this is only for the US. So I still won't buy it.

@BJ:

Activision didn't tell them to butcher the graphic style of GH, treat Skateboarding and its culture like a freaking joke, make GH note layouts suck, force the user to use that godforsaken touchbar on the new guitar, and many other terrible things. Neversoft does not make good games. In a word.. they SUCK.
