Buy Dragon Age: Origins, get Mass Effect 2 bonus content? photo

According to an alleged fan survey, BioWare and Electronic Arts are considering using in-game Mass Effect 2 bonuses to encourage the purchase of its other big RPG, Dragon Age: Origins. The survey asks players what kind of incentives would make them most likely to purchage Dragon Age, and gives a selection of examples.

Suggestions for bonus content include a $5 rebate on Mass Effect 2, exclusive weaponry, custom skins, a brand new character and a playable demo. It's not often that the purchase of one game could affect the gameplay content of a completely separate title, but if this glimpse into BioWare's mind leads to a real marketing stunt, then it's something we're about to see.

Take a look at the survey segment below and see if any of that content catches your eye. Would Mass Effect 2 goodies make you more likely to buy Dragon Age: Origins?

[Thanks, Clark]

I've got a better idea: cancel Dragon Age and put the team to work on Mass Effect 2 DLC.

I've got an even BETTER better-better idea: scrap both ME2 and DA, and BioWare makes me a sandwich.

Was gonna buy it anyway. Now that it may have bonus content for perhaps my favourite game this gen... I will buy it twice as hard!

While I understand the immediate reaction of those planning on buying both (SWEET!!!!), consider if the required purchase were NCCAA 10 (another EA title). I know that may be a bit of a stretch (different Dev, different genre...they couldn't possibly go there!), but what would be the next step on this path?

I'm less inclined to point a finger at Bioware as the bad guy in this one as this sounds much more like a greedy money monger EA investigation than something Bioware would consider tasteful (but then I could be wrong there)

[You're welcome, Jim]

Br0th3rGr1mm: I think the driving force here is that Dragon Age and Mass Effect would generally appeal to the same types of gamers, or just BioWare fans in general. I think the reaction would definitely be different for NCCAA 10, but that's also because it would be trying to crossbreed two totally different audiences.

I can see where this sort of thing is a potential slippery slope, but in this case, I don't see too big an issue with it. I just wish that buying Dragon Age meant you'd get Dragon Age content, as I have no desire to ever play another Mass Effect for as long as I live.

They're already offering exclusive content through Mass Effect Galaxies, so I think this could be pushing it a bit too far. It's all fair adding incentives to bring in customers, but slapping Mass Effect bonuses on everything (even things completely unrelated to the ME universe) is just a tad greedy.

Likewise, I'd assume this was EA's idea.

Having Mass Effect 2 bonus content would probably bump Dragon Age up on my to buy list, as petty as it sounds.

Totally planning on getting both anyway. Everyone else should as well (this is not a subjective choice!).

I was planning on getting both, but i really want to get Dragon age for pc, and mass effect for 360 to carry over savegames, do you think the bonus will work cross-platform? or do i have to potentially get dragon age for 360 now?

This is an obvious answer:

Only if Dragon Age Origins is a good game.

@Mr. Sterling,

Your lack of taste on the Mass Effect front aside, I get that a cross genre bonus for purchase would not make much sense (even for idiot marketing types) and I doubt we would ever see something like that. I don't really see this as being a huge deal either, but that really depends a LOT on what additional content they offer. I could care less about a stupid skin or weapon (non-uber), but a bonus mission might just tick me off a bit.

To me, this will probably make me back away from purchasing both instead of making me want to buy Dragon Age: Origins. I'm a relatively poor gamer who must make his purchases wisely. I'm also a gamer who likes go poking around at everything in the game. Making exclusive content come with this game is rather discouraging. Discouraging enough where I might not even pick up Mass Effect 2 (might meaning that it depends on how royally screwed I get over the bonus content and how much I'm missing out on).

I want to play Mass Effect 2. But I want to play a complete version of it. Or at least as complete as I can get it. I'm a PS3 owner with no iPhone so I accept that I won't be getting the exclusive stuff that comes with the original and the iPhone game. It would be one thing if this was all DLC where I know I could get it at a later time when I have a source of revenue. But to give the game exclusive content for another game that I really want to play seems rather unfair, espicially to the financially challenged such as myself.

If I try to buy it used, I don't get the bonus content. It also discourages from renting the game. And who says how long this DLC will stay on shelves with the game. What if the bonus content doesn't come with the game anymore by the time I finally find a job? Perhaps this is all pre-order only crap screwing me even further? To me, it's forcing me to make a decision in a certain time frame if I want as 100% of a Mass Effect 2 game as I can get. That's discouraging to me and makes me feel like I'm being backed into a corner and being forced to make a purchase.

But are we going to be killing dragons in the game? That's the big question.

It would be funny if it was an extra mission where you find the planet of Dragon Age and then you can shoot the shit out of those dragons.

Dialogue Options :

1. Bioware sucks, I'm not buying either one.
2. Free stuff is bad, game companies never do anything good. IT'S A TRAP!
3. A bonus for buying a game from a quality developer that I was going to buy anywhere? That's a nice surpise.

You selected : 3.

Did whomever filled out the form do it backwards or something? Some of the choices dont make any sense. I.e. The 2 point difference between wanting a unique skin, and getting unique armour. Or how a 5 dollar rebate is more valuable than ANYTHING else...

Nothing except phenomenal review scores could make me care about what looks like the most immature and mediocre gorefest. The Sex and Violence trailer pretty much sealed the deal on how I felt about this game. However, given that I'd be pissed if the only way to get certain ME content was with a copy of Dragon Age, I sure hope it's a rebate or a demo.

How about buying Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age and all the other Bioware products since Baldur's Gate will give you a lifetime subscription to The Old Republic.... oh Bioware, why must you take all my hard earned cash like so...
