Button punching could be coming to FNR 4 as DLC photo

Buttons are so yesterday. One thing that appeared in Fight Night Round 3 but didn’t carry over to Fight Night Round 4 is the ability to punch with buttons. The move, of course, was the subject of many message board disputes: some people aren’t buying with the revolutionary “Fight Stick” design is selling. But know this -- Electronic Arts is aware of the frustration and has at least floated the idea of adding button punch controls ... as downloadable content.

“There is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC,” Fight Night Round 4 producer Brian Hayes said in an interview with IGN.

Oddly enough, the lack button controls haven’t slowed down the punch pace. If you’re adventurous, try to play a match online. If you fight a person not going the “run away and throw a haymaker every four seconds” route, chances are you’ll fight a pugilist spamming the stick as if it were buttons anyway. We dread this sort of cheap downloadable content like no tomorrow, but at least the effects will (probably) be minimal.

"We dread this sort of cheap downloadable content like no tomorrow"

Why, exactly?

So sick of the trend of update patches becoming DLC. Fuck that.

Enjoy paying extra for stuff that 5 years ago would be on the disc

I got into the series with FNR3. I tried using the stick, but found it to be too unwieldy and ended up using the face buttons instead. Having tried the demo and finding no options to use I became frustrated and while the game looks and moves great its the gameplay that matters most. I'm waiting on this DLC before I purchase the game. I don't understand why they would take out options. If anything there should be MORE options.

No one said it would cost money yet. Lots of games do updates now that are free.

I guess the basic rule of thumb now is that if developers need to implement and test even a minor change, the bill is on us.

True, "Free DLC" is always better PR than a "Patch", which implies something was broken. This is in the same vein of releasing a demo as a Beta to increase desirability, and making people jump through hoops to get codes.

The Free DLC is better than a Patch only applies when they're providing something that sounds impressive, Like an extra mission, like some of the Dynasty Warriors games for example.

A patch to correct an "Error" (of judgement in this case) shows the company is concerned about the game they've released and is trying to fix it and make it better, which gives a pretty positive image.

DLC to add "Button Mapping" gives the impression of Money Hungry vultures. I suspect this will be free, but DLC and Money go hand in hand, and immediately gives a negative impression.

Good of them to add it for the people that want to use the buttons. However, I can see there being a huge uproar when they announce that it'll cost them 400 points.

I never used the buttons in FN3 so im doing just fine with the stick in FN4, even if it is occassionaly inaccurate.

I can't imagine them expecting people to pay for it. They are going to have to put it in just to get some people to go out an buy the game. I assume they are waiting on first week numbers to see if they should bother..

If I have to pay for fucking BUTTON CONFIGURATIONS, we are going to reach a whole new low in DLC. If Killzone 2 can add tweaks to their config for free, why not FN4?

At least they might do something cause a month ago, they didn't say anything to address this problem.

Holy shit. Now we have to PAY for alternate control schemes.

The end is nigh my friends, the end is nigh.

Geez, I don't think the guy is is implying that it will be PAID DLC guys, calm down :)

But really, if they add this, I hope that for non-private online matches they divide the button users from the stick users as it's unfair. You may think it's no biggie, but imagine if in SFIV, you have to hit QCF while the other guy just hits one button. Not cool, it's the equivalent of using macros to me.

I could drop any button masher out there with the stick config.

I foresee a huge sales increase if this is true cause I know alot of people that said they weren't gonna buy it because of the buttons not being there. I'm sure this is the same for many others.

I don't see what the big deal is here. Skate had ONLY control stick controls and that's the main reason i hate it and have not played it! if ea wants to have only control stick controls then either learn it or stop bitching about it. as for me, i just say i hate skate because its a crappy game.
Hammersmith's Avatar - Comment posted on 06/29/2009 11:00

See, I thought skate was fantastic. But the difference is that if I pull off a 360 hardflip instead of a 360 laserflip and land it.. really who cares? If I throw an uppercut instead of a hook that could get me laid out. In skate it doesn't usually matter (cept for those trick specific challenges which were incredibly frustrating) whereas in Fight Night you really need the controls to do what you intended.

Wolvie doesn't get it.

Why can't I play guitar hero with a traditional controller? That plastic guitar is the reason I hate the game. If Activision wants to make another plastic guitar game then either learn it or stop botching about it

Are. You Serious? A control set-up that should have been made an option as DLC?

Just wait until Natal comes out. They'll make unlocking gestures for use in the game DLC.

this isn't an attempt to cash in, only a response to all the weenies crying about their inability to play effectively with the stick. i don't get why people have such a hard time with it. there seems to be plenty of people (myself included) that are able to play with no buttons. when it was introduced for fn3, the stick layout was extremely innovative, but it was lost on the neanderthal button mashers. too bad we can simplify it more: move with the d-pad and just press x to punch.

Gord you people are sensitive.

The guy didn't even IMPLY that you would have to pay for this DLC and you're already complaining.

And if it does turn out to be basically just a free patch, then I'd actually have to commend EA for listening to fans and giving them an extra option beyond the control scheme that they designed the game around.

Sure, if you have to pay for it, THEN you can whine and bitch and moan. For now though, turn off your E-Tard rage and learn to read.

People complaining that this would have been on the disc a few years ago: maybe yes, maybe no. But what's certain is that if it WEREN'T on the disc, you'd be shit out of luck. I see DLC as a good thing. (And remember, no one has said it will be pay DLC).

@DinnertimeNinja:

EXACTLY. Everyone here needs to work on their reading comprehension and nerdrage.

@Takeshi:

1) This isn't a fighting game. This is a boxing game. They are not the same.
2) Why should people be angry about developers saying they will LISTEN to their customers, see how the fight stick scheme is received, and if it's received poorly they will IMPROVE the game by adding additional options? This is a bad thing?
3) You don't play fighting games.

That's sad that EA wanted to try something new, and when people hated it, they wanted to make up for it, only to get hated on again.

It will most likely be free people.

I've held off on buying FN4 due to the lack of button controls, despite the fact that I adored FN3. I mean, sure, I like the idea of controlling the punches with the stick (after all, it works great in Skate), but it just requires too much awkward finesse to distinguish between hooks, uppercuts body blows, and personally, I don't like having to break my own thumbs just to play a game.
