But isn't this nature's way of weeding out the weak? photo

So you're sitting on the bus and you get so involved in your game of New Super Mario Bros. that you end up missing your stop. We've all had a moment like this, but have you ever been so involved in your game that a car almost hit you?

New York State claims that too many people are being distracted by handheld devices and it’s becoming a safety issue. With three deaths last year involving handheld device distractions, the state has decided to introduce today a legislation that will ban the use of handheld devices while crossing the road. The devices included in the ban are any handheld gaming devices, personal music players, cell phones or BlackBerries.

I think it's ridiculous that this ban needs consideration in the first place. If you’re dumb enough to walk in a busy area and play your Nintendo DS at the same time, then maybe you deserve to be hit by a car. Consider it nature’s way of weeding out the idiots.

I can understand if you're deaf, but come on, it's not hard to hear a car. New York is sounding crapper and crapper with the no smoking stuff... this just doesn't help

Soon you won't be able to talk while walking down the street, and then after that no breathing while standing with in 100 yards of other people!

How do you control something like that though? Do they actually think people will hit Pause before they cross every street, pause their games when they cross the street, tell whoever else is on the other end of their mobile phone they will have to call back because they have to cross the street?

This is probably just to provide the NYPD with some busy work since they obviously have stopped all the murders/robberies/rapes in the city...

People will just have to go back to reading the newspaper while walking.

Don't more people dye from choking on pretzels?

This law sounds too poorly thought out to pass. A cell phone with a bluetooth headset would count also.

I play my DS walking around sometimes, but never near large metal kill-me devices such as cars.

I loved Vegas where I could walk down the strip with a beer in my hand purchased in the corner store without a hassle.
If I ever moved to the US it would definitely be somewhere like Nevada or Texas.

I think the Feds should test EVERYONE and those with low IQs should be forced to cross busy streets with handheld electronic devices.

Or... just make everyone get a national handheld gaming device ID card.

Or... as a rite of passage into adulthood, all 13 year-olds should be forced to cross the entire length of Manhattan in the nude while playing a handheld electronic device.

Separate the wheat from the chaff and make America strong again!

If you can't survive the challenge, your ass gets shipped to Edmonton.

Grrrrr.

According to Wiki, the population of NYC is 8,143,197. The city is looking to pass legislation that would effect a ban order because of the deaths of three people.

Imagine what this country would be like if we made ALL of our laws based on the stupidity of .00000037% of the population. This is the kind of Social Darwinism we need people.

The trade-off between freedom and security, so often proposed so seductively, very often leads to the loss of both.

He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.

In the end, I say that it is stupid and shouldn't be passed. If you are dumb enough to get killed doing something so stupid, then I will thank you greatly for aiding in the act of defending the world from over population.

Though I thought that about Bush at first, then he over welcomed his aid and still hasn't gained the freedom.

Comment to that: We have some of the most advanced technology for a reason idiot, use it.
