Burnout is a 'postage stamp' compared to Fuel, claims Codemasters photo

If they say size doesn't matter, then Codemasters certainly isn't listening. The company's Mad Max-style racer Fuel is being sold on the scale of its massive open world, something which Codies' David Brickley is claiming would need to be contained on four Blu-ray discs if it was developed using traditional methods.

He also claimed that Fuel's world absolutely dwarfs the play area of EA's Burnout Paradise, saying that it was the size of a postage stamp in comparison.

"I did a little Power Point internally to do it and it zoomed them in to each other," said Brickley, when comparing Burnout to Fuel. "It's like a little postage stamp because I think it does like four kilometers or something."

Fuel is offering a 5,000 square mile map of procedurally generated racing chicanery. In case you haven't got the message by now ... the game is bloody big!

Four Blu-rays worth of desert to... drive around in. Awesome?

the burnout city is plenty big for me. there are plenty of challenges and time trials on streets. now with the bikes, all the new updates they have given us, I'm perfectly happy with Burnout.

Oddly, this kinda reminds me of politics. Just degrade your competition to make yourself look better. If Fuel delivers where it matters(Gameplay, graphics) then I'll check it out. OTherwise, Burnout suits me just fine.

I wonder if its perhaps too big, if there is such a thing. I mean, seeing as its a racing game, surely one of the things about it that is important is being able to learn a route or a track - if the competition is on such a massive scale, the ability to do this is much reduced. Or maybe that could be part of the fun - having to find your way (although it could be pretty frustrating I suspect). Who knows, we'll see.

Burnout's Paradise City, while not that big, is very tightly designed. If Fuel can deliver the same quality (or better) of level design then I'm all for it, but don't make it big just for bigness sake..

You know, I haven't heard much about this game aside from the that its driving and its got mad play area.

That said, I'm really interested in what I want thsi game to be: a cross country, Cannonball run-esque endurance run. Oregon Trail in a fast car.

Its fun to dream.

@Tubatic

I'm with ya, I've never really been to interested in most racing games. Hopefully this hype leads to something revolutionary.

That's cool and all...but when you say a postage stamp, what are we comparing it to? Another postage stamp that is slightly larger? I know he gave numbers and that's ridiculous. I'm excited too, but yeah if you say postage stamp...maybe compare it to a manilla folder or a big mac or...Kentucky...Something! :D

It's quality not quantity that usually makes the difference?

But how much awesome, free DLC with Fuel have? Will anyone still be playing Fuel a year after it's release? And will Fuel have jets?

I hope it's good, burn out is one of the few racing games I have good old fashion fun with. Also... What's wrong with that Elephant's ass?

Awesome. It's about time devs got wise to the power of procedural generation and stopped harping on tehy blurays.

I wish developers would just shut the fuck up and finish their games.Their game isn't coming out until sometime in 2009, who gives a shit? Why turn this into a dick waving contest when you really don't have much to show?

Procedurally generated? So you could never learn the city because it's not permanent?

Also, Desert Bus was way bigger than this.

First of all, Burnout Paradise is already 10 months old or so, you would expect the next open-world racer to be bigger. Second, every inch of Paradise city is fun to drive in, if every inch of the world in Fuel is fun to drive in, then awesome, but I'm guessing we'll get lots of repeated landscapes and desert.

I like code masters though, but no need to use another game to promote one's own, especially a game that's almost a year old.

Slap me on a mini bike in a map the size of a shopping mall with zombies and topless chicks and I assure you that the less than postage stamp game would kick ass.

Size is not everything, if the game takes 4 years to drive across the map but blows ass the game just blows ass. Size only matters when you are talking about your penis. PENIS
