Burnout DLC 'Big Surf Island' won’t be free, but looks cool anyway photo

Criterion’s Burnout Revenge is due for another big update in the form of a landscape, but it won’t be free. Recently, Criterion updated fans on Big Surf Island. The DLC is a new area designed specifically to quench players' apetites for big air. According to Criterion's blog, the island will be around the size of the Downtown area in the main game.

Unfortunately, all free things must come to a semi-end. Big Surf Island will be considered “premium content” and thus will require you to open your pocketbook if you want to experience it. Criterion has previously related to fans that the content would be free, but made the switch because of the “ambitious” nature of the project. It apparently turned into a much larger area than what was originally intended.

If you want the developer-to-you lowdown on Big Surf Island, feel free to hit up Criterion’s Crash TV. In the meanwhile I’ll keep drooling over the new car pictured above. It’s called the Dust Storm and will be released in coordination with the island DLC.

This does not look worth money to me. Then again I did not like the way the changed burnout to this free roam island crap and did not buy it.

Burnout was indeed a GREAT game, but it go a bit boring a bit to quick. I got rid of my copy back in July b4 the FIRST DLC bikes and day/night cycles came out. the new island looks great tho. there may not be more HUGE DLC after this one fellas.

Burnout Paradise, Brad :-P

If it's good I'll gladly pay for it.

This is bull. The island was supposed to be free. They said it was free to promote sales. I bought the game. Now it's not free?

Well **** you criterion.

What exactly have you added to the game? Shit bikes that don't crash properly? Ohh a night mode. Yeah changing that sky box and environment light map was a lot of work. I think they added 2 cars aside from that.

So really a bunch of useless crap that should have come with the game. The island was the only thing I was ever interested in. Now it's "premium" content?

Just play gta or crackdown and drive around town. More fun than Disney Cars for adults

wait, they're still updating Burnout Revenge AND Paradise? sounds like they're really competing for a non-existent "Best DLC of the year" award!

@Iron Dragon:

Bloody hell, are you such a skinflint that you won't pay for seems to be a large expansion? These guys need to be paid, but people like you are too damned cheap to pay for anything worthwhile and demand it should be free...sigh.

Criterion are doing a fine job of showing how DLC should be done, and every single one of us should be behind them, even if we don't have the game or intend to download the extra content.

As far as I know, they never claimed it would be free. I think they said 'maybe', and after the free stuff they've put out everyone just assumed.

I don't mind paying for significant additions when they've been supporting the game so well thus far. This is how it should be done, with gestures like the free DLC we've had to keep interest and build goodwill, with expansions you can buy down the line.

Lightyears ahead of most other developers out there (lol Dead Space Downloadable Fail).

Man, some people...

Criterion has been catering to fans more than any other developer out there.

They've made TONS of free updates for who knows how little money. Now, they'd like you to chip in a few bucks for they're largest and most time-consuming expansion.

THIS is the type of DLC that is worth downloading. The company released a completely finished product out the gate and then continued to support the product for what seemed to be forever.

Count yourselves lucky. If this was EA, you'd have already spent an extra $50 to get what you've gotten for free thus far.

I'm with Timmeh and DinnerTimeNinja. Some people have unrealistic expectations.

"These guys need to be paid, but people like you are too damned cheap to pay for anything worthwhile and demand it should be free...sigh."

This was all part of a business plan... They promoted it as free to boost sales of the game. They were never giving us this content as an act of charity.

Also yes I understand they need money too. The legendary cars and crap are going to cost money and that's ok because they never said any of it would be free. The island however was promoted as one of those big free updates and now they're screwing people over.

Thankfully I bought the game within the last 30 days and it's still sealed so I can return it (Just got a 360 this month. Been busy playing other games). I just think this is a dick move by Criterion.

They can charge whatever they'd like for anything they've made but they crossed the line when they mislead people into believing they'd get this free. I'm not the only person who bought the game under the impression that the island would be free.

Can you provide a source for the "free island promise"?

Either way they don't owe the customer anything. They didn't have to hand out anything for free. When you buy it off the shelves you're already paying for a gaming experience that's complete was any other.

Actually never mind it looks like Brad already did.

"We’d mentioned in a previous podcast that this would be free content, but we can now confirm that it will be premium paid-for content.

Here’s why. We never expected to create anything this ambitious for the island, but as it progressed we got more and more excited about what it could become. (In fact, that’s the story of all our Downloadable Content.)"

Fair enough. They put a lot of work into it. Why not get something back.

@Heretic: It's not just the stupid island. It probably is a minor piece of content. That's not what I'm pissed about.

I'm pissed because criterion thinks it's ok to pull the old bait and switch. I won't support any developer doing that.

holy crap no matter what a publisher does w/DLC they always lose in the fanboy minds.

imo, Criterion has done the best job so far of any publisher in regards to DLC; who else has given so much free DLC away? Soul Calibur 4's DLC nickel and diming made me hate the game.

i know i still pop in my Burnout Paradise disc once a week (still want to get 100$ trophies!).

@Iron Dragon:

They said it was going to be free, yes, and then they made it bigger and better. The DLC changed, and yet you still want it for free? They are entirely within their rights to change their mind about the content and therefore the price for this, you know.
