Burnout 5: Not the same sh*t again photo

Burnout Revenge is a tough act to follow, especially after the follow-ups to games like Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer have been shiny ponies, but less than innovative and new feeling. Short of PGR4's and Forza 2, there really aren't that other many exciting racing games to look forward to (unless you were born in the Midwest and love you them other car games). I jest -- that one was for Workman.  GamePro spent some time with the Burnout 5 (working title) people and here's what they're promising for the sequel:

Throw what you know about Burnout in the fire. Inside Criterion's quest to build a better Burnout: Alex Ward can assure us that Burnout 5 (a working title only) will still be the game so many have come to love. "Burnout has always been about driving like a madman through traffic, and that hasn't changed at all." But, he said, "if we just made Burnout Revenge again on the PS3 and 360, no one would be satisfied with that-least of all us. Burnout 5 is still based on the premise of driving like a maniac and crashing your car. But it's got some significant differences."

The feature has gone offline, but it said the gameplay would be less structured and more free-roaming (but not like Gran Theft Auto's free roaming per se) and you will be able to zip around the city and cause ridiculous pile-ups and pandemic damage to lure out new quests and challengers. Sounds like a winner to me! Hopefully they'll sneak in a mode that lets us strap Serious Sam on to the hood of a Chevy Nova for some real All-American family fun.

By the way, if anyone missed Burnout 2 on the PS2, I seriously recommend diving in a Bargain Bin Laden for it -- hours of morale-reducing fun, guaranteed.

Burnout 2 for the GameCube was the last one that was enjoyable...Burnout 3 seemed too much like a enclosed area and Burnout Revenge seemed slow.

I love you, Connie. It's time for you to ditch the zero and get with a hero.

as long as the controls are as responsive as all the previous entries in the series, i can't really see this one bein anything short of awsome.

I just have to say that I'm glad Connie Chung has found some new work here at Dtoid. There really needs to be more Connie period. Maury you suck for keeping her to yourself.

they need to make like an EA Big version of Burnout, like they did with SSX Tricky. Make huge wacky levels with flips and rings of FIRE!!!

i'd buy it.

@ velcroman: Trackmania Sunrise + Burnout = awesome (look the first game up if you have a half-decent PC)

From description it sounds like the gameplay will be similar to need for speed underground, in the respect that it is kind of an open world. Personally I really don't like this, too much time just driving around for no reason, I like to just enter races and play, no more of this less structured BS in racing games.

Am I the only one that doesn't like free-roaming racing games? I don't want to spend forever trying to find the shortest path. I'd rather hone my skills on a track I know than spend my time memorizing what alley to take. If it is just free roaming prior to the start of actual races, that would be fine, but I don't want a Midnight Club-esque memorizathon.

I tend to drift towards the more arcade-style racing games. Gran Turismo and Forza are way to detailed for me. I just want to crash into things and then blow up my car's wreckage to fuck up other cars.

The screenshots make it look like a more open world, that would be totally kick ass. Keep the core of Burnout and all of its modes, but give you a free roam aspect through different cities and have different cars that you can upgrade. Upgrading and customizing cars is one thing that i really like about other racing games, but I always prefered teh core gameplay of Burnout more.

I'm gonna fucking hate it if it has point-to-point racing, that shit is too un needed, I hate having to learn a map before I race on it i'd rather just get going!
