Bungie: 'We have a lot to learn' from CoD4 photo

In news that might make my Podcastle co-host (and rampant Halo fanboy/CoD4 hater) Wardrox rip his lungs out in disgust, Halo developer Bungie has admitted that they could learn a thing or two from Infinity Ward's critically acclaimed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

We have a lot to learn from their success too, they did some very innovative things to keep people going and their experience-rewards system was something that we paid a lot of attention to... I think it's a great game and single player obviously is fantastic... They did a hell of a job with their set pieces, of scripting certain moments that they were really sure the player was going to actually see and experience first hand. The way that they use those moments to craft the player experience... Halo has a lot to learn from.

This is stuff I like to see -- a developer being gracious and humble enough to praise another team's work and admit that some aspects may even be superior. The likes of Itagaki have a lot to learn from Bungie, in that respect. Jolly good show.

Multiplater online on COD4 is the best FPS online experience ever, glad Bungie is taking a cue from them, it will only serve to better Bungie's games.

Does this mean there will be a nuclear explosion in the next Halo? ^_^

This makes me happy, for some reason.

On a side note, I was having a friendly argument with someone about religion the other day, and they brought up that Christianity is the most popular so it must be good.

I said "Well, Halo is the most popular FPS at the moment, does that make it the best FPS ever?"

And they didn't say anything for a bit, and tried to turn the tables on to me and said "But you don't even play FPS games! You're an atheist!"

...wot?

It is really nice to see a developer praise what is, essentially, a competitor. And I agree, Halo games could drastically benefit from emulating and building upon the CoD4 single player experience. However, I still favor the Halo multiplayer model and would like to see similar core gameplay in future Bungie projects. That said, fewer Space Marines would be nice.

I think the biggest thing that Halo missed in its campaign was the feeling of being in the middle of a war. In CoD2 and CoD4 (the only games in the series I've played), I really felt like I was in the middle of a warzone. In Halo 3 I was supposed to "finish the fight," but I never really remembered a war beginning. I always just felt like I was some guy roaming around on foreign planets sniping aliens in the face. The epic scale and sense of urgency present in CoD titles is just absent in Halo games.

Bungie has always been the only classy one in the sea of HALO-tards. LOL Good for them..

I hate playing Halo online because of all the complete retards on there that I would like to hang like a piece of meat to drain the blood. Then slice them up in neat little piece and gift wrap them and hand them out to all of you.

I like to hear this. I prefer Halo multiplayer for a number of reasons, but COD4's campaign is one of the best ive ever played, and there are aspects to COD4's multiplayer that i like.

Bungie, I bow to you. Now please get the rights back to Myth and continue that saga as if III never occurred.

Halo can't do what I love in call of duty: online levels having a purpose. "you unlock the spartan laser" just doesnt work. It would be nice for them to take some hints from COD, but at the end of the day the two are separate games in the same genre.

The online experience of CoD4 mixed with the player freedom and accessibility of Halo 3 sounds like a formula for epic win to me.

Yeah, CoD 4 was much better than Halo 3 in many ways, especially online.

Like others have said, kudos to Bungie for manning-up. It seems like they really want to make the best game they possibly can instead of simply cashing in on rehash after rehash, something I was beginning to fear after the huge letdown that was H3. Here's hoping they can up the ante with their next game.

How come American developers, known for being less tactful than their Japanese counterparts, are frequently more polite, while Japanese developers, coming from a culture with a whole politeness level built into their language, frequently spar and talk shit about who has the best action game? Good show, Bungie.

Eating a slice of humble pie, nice, good show, as long as Bungie can learn from COD4's success and build upon it for their next game. COD4's single player game did make me feel like I was in a war zone, as did previous games in the series. Maybe COD4 hit home a little more because it was a modern war game and there is a war in Iraq going on now. But whatever it was, it worked and was a blast.

I respect Bungie a lot for their candor and their desire to please fans of their games. They also seem to put in a lot of effort to make the whole development process transparent, and to give people a window into their world.

HarassmentPanda, you're absolutely right about the lack of a "warzone" vibe with Halo 3's atmosphere. I never really considered that. Aside from a couple parts where you load into warthogs with other marines, or something like that, I didn't get that feeling at all in the game.

Hopefully this doesnt mean Bungie is going to forget about programming actual AI and instead give us a crap load of super human enemies on the hardest difficulty of their next game.

Halo is different to CoD. CoD is good. Halo guy says "We like CoD. Let's make CoH"... CoHk.

I like they are abing nice. But the two FPS are very, very different and not many improvements could translate across sucessfully.

Hitman two-one, this is Hitman actual. Halo would probably sold a bit more if you could shoot Hadjis with the ACOG, over?

Hitman actual, this is Hitman two-one. No not copy, need a fire mission on the Pillar of Light, over.

Hitman two-one, this is Hitman actual. What the fuck is a Pillar of Light.. oh shit hang onm we have an RPG team on the east ridge, range 200, ROE clears us for targeting, engage!

So the next Halo will have the chief die in 3 shots and infinite respawning enemies? And a multiplayer with a horrble matchmaking system and a stupid perk system?

Cool, guess I'll be avoiding it then.

The one thing I absolutely hate about COD4 (and several games) is the lack of proper matchmaking. I enjoy being able to go into a room and have competition, not someone who can completely obliterate me and every single other person without even trying. There's no fun in that.

You can't really jump from one extreme or the other here. Basically, Bungie is saying that they're learning from others about works and what doesn't. That attention to detail I applaud.

But if I have to shout "Fucking Martyrdom!" in a Halo match, my screams of anguish will ignite the world on fire.

Halo becoming better?

Puh-Leezz!

C0D4 was awesome but after beating single player and logging 40 or so hours in multi I got bored, real bored.

So this means Halo 4 will be exactly the same 3 but with a stealth mission that you get guided through and a multiplayer with unlockables?

I agree with mikeyed. Totally different styles of play. It's nice to see Bungie giving props where they're due, and express the desire to improve their game. Few other developers seem to care about their fanbase and product that much. That's why I've loved Bungie since their Marathon days.
