Bungie's new IP close to having a publisher photo

Bungie is finally leaving the Halo franchise after Halo Reach. They have been committed to the series for many years now and ODST sort of blew up into something bigger than they ever expected if you take their word for it. So what's next from the studio that saved the Xbox and when will it get here? No one knows, but evidently the new IP is close to having a publsiher.

The game, which isnt' tied to any platform, has been in development for a while now, but very little is known about it. Speaking with Eurogame about the game having a publisher Lars Bakken of Bungie said, "I think internally we'll know sometime soon. I don't handle these things, but I'd imagine we're going to know way before we make the public announcement of who's handling that! But sure, I think those talks are, I guess, close."

That's some real firm confirmation there, huh? Talks to get a publisher may, kind of, be on the way at some point. I find it hard to believe that Bungie will have any trouble finding a publisher unless this new game is actually macaroni artwork, and even then I'm pretty sure someone would produce it as long as they could say "From the developers of Halo" on the box.

"From the developers of Halo" on the box."

I'm willing to bet that they'll put that to every game that isn't Halo.

I'm curious as to what else Bungie could actually do without being tied to the Halo series. I hope it's not an FPS.

I don't think Bungie should definitely say they're done with Halo games. The Halo-verse is really interesting for a lot of people, and while I can understand they don't want to be known as the "Halo developer" there is no reason to stop developing Halo games as long as they're quality games and the company is making a profit from them. And so far, the Halo games have by and large been good, and they're absolutely making a killing from them. So why stop forever? Just take a break, develop other games - but don't kill everyone's hopes and say that you're done forever.

I really would like to see another Oni.

That's not going to happen, so I'm ready for anything Bungie wants to give me.

Provided I have a 360/more powerful PC by then.

im not sure bungie will develop for the PS3 at least not right now. I mean im not sure they have any experience with the platform.

Don't bet on Bungie working on anything Oni-related, Rockstar owns the Oni IP.

Why would the "makers of Halo" label be a good thing is clearly beyond me...

@FinnE: i totally agree. While they might need s break from Halo, never say never. I know it's cool to hate Halo bur Bungie is a talented studio and Halo is a great series. Nothing is perfect and Halo had it's flaws but it was a quality product; an obvious labor of love.

I can understand Halo not being someones cup of tea but to insinuate it's the worst thing ever is ridiculous.

I'm curious to see what Bungie is upto next bur I'd like to see them come back to the Haloverse when they're up to it.

The burning question for me is whether or not this game will be multiplat. I tend to believe that it will not be. My thoughts are based on the “comfortable” relationship that “first parties” often enjoy with console makers. The tanking of the world economy seemed to really strain their announcement of wanting to break ties with MS. The R&D for consoles foreign to a “native” developer is costly and this fact seemed to result in making 2 more MS products; Halo Wars and ODST. I guess the timing was bad. I can’t avoid viewing this situation in a similar way to how I view an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend who contacts you after dumping you mostly because she/he realizes the grass is in fact NOT greener on the other side of the fence. Exorbitant costs for developing for the PS3 and the near nonexistent attach rate for the WII (and the “smaller than” attach rate of the PS3) make their decision dubious at best. I hope they are as good as their word, because if they make another 360 exclusive, they run risk of cleaning egg off their collective faces. Additionally, I am very curious to see if other console owners flock to their products.

"Bungie is finally leaving the Halo franchise"
Yaaaay.

I've said it time and again but I think those guys were suffocating in that franchise. They just put too much in to quickly and it's all their really known for, so it's great to see they are branching out on their own with something different.

Hopefully their next title will not be a PC/360 exclusive, so others will get to enjoy their talent.

This just in...

'In a surprise move, Sony has just been hand-picked by Bungie to publish it's new IP. It seems that Bungie wish to play Microsoft and Sony off against one another more by giving each publisher it's own Bungie IP'.

... obviously this is pure bullshit, but how interesting would it be to see?!

I would love to see a new Oni too, the gameplay and animations were fantastic but the boring level design and crappy graphics killed the experience.

I want to see that. I want to see if Bungie can move as many units on PS3 as they have on the 360. I want the comparison and I think games developers (non-Bungie) would want to see it also....if only as a determination as to system sales strength.

@Daxelman Yeah, as Snakedude said, Rockstar owns the IP now for Oni. Bungie had to sell it off when MS acquired Bungie, since they weren't interested in it.

Damnit, and since the teasers for ODST had some Oni references in them, I thought Bungie might take another look at it.

I think people are complaining because there are too many Halo FPS games and the fact that they are all too similar. Is the new ip going to be another fps? Cause if it is, it better be radically different from Halo.

As far as consoles go, multi-plat is a possibility, but I don't see it happening. I would imagine that they would at least stay with 360 and not make it PS3 or Wii exclusive (Let's face it: More people know who Bungie is on 360 than anyone else). Second, it would make sense to establish one more IP to make sure it can sell instead of jumping head first into a new console with a new IP (The 360 is their established market, more units to sell there). Third, it wouldn't make sense to put a "From the developers of Halo" sticker on a game for PS3, especially when PS3 owners haven't touched one of the Halo games (At least, the majority of them). Not trying to sound fanboyish, just stating my opinion.

Whatever happens though, I'm all for a new Bungie game, regardless of what it is. Talent is talent.

They could make Happy BunnyLand Adventures (In Space!) and it would still sell because of their rabid fanbase.

I'd rather prefer MS to publish more fresh Rareware games actually, it's time for a new focus.

If I remember the details on Bungie's split from Microsoft, I believe that MS still retains a rather large ownership stake in the company. Not 50% or anything like that, but still a large chunk. I'm pretty sure that precludes anything Bungie does ever from going to a competitor like Sony or Nintendo.

Could be wrong though...

Spoke to Lars at E3. I went to the Bungie Halo area to say thank you as my first visit to E3 was a reward for registering Myth II. Random Bungie employee ran into the booth and pulled out Lars. We spoke for a bit and Lars asked me if I had a chance to play ODST. I declined saying I was more interested in what Bungie was doing next and explained I was a fan of Bungie's older more diversified work, he smiled and told me I wouldn't be disappointed with what they had coming next.

Myth was radically different when it came out, everyone had resource games but Myth was tactical with a great single player and multiplayer component. Marathon was incredible! Lan Parties and the single player again was unbelievable. Of course, Halo jump started the whole FPS on consoles so kudos there and again great single and multiplayer experience. The questions is, what genre is left that will be ground breaking, include a single and multi player experience, that hasn't been done before?

I'm gonna guess that Bungie will get purchased by EA.
Bungie's next new game IP I have a feeling will be multiplatform.
(360/PS3/PC)
