Bungie is looking for a new Lead Writer, somebody to manage a team of writers, blah blah blah. If you've got a lot of experience and such, well, maybe they'll hire you. That's not the interesting bit about the position.
One of the things mentioned specifically as "a plus" is experience with "branching or non-linear narrative." Now that would be something really different from what I've come to expect from Bungie. Perhaps getting out of the Halo game will yield interesting results.
In addition, applicants are required to have "Zero desire to parlay your game writing experience into a film, TV show, novel &c." I don't even know where to begin to speculate on what that could mean but I'm sure there's a very funny story in there.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
no. I live in Australia and it's already the evening of may 3rd. Timezones suck.
As for the story, what? So they don't want to make their games into books? That's fucking weird, the Halo books are pretty awesome. Also, yay for non-linear stories.
Master Chief finds a weapons armory containing a shotgun and a energy sword. You can only pick one type of weapon. What do you do?
Pick up the shotgun (turn to page 28)
Pick up the energy sword (turn to page 35)
Guns are for wusses! Rip and Tear! (turn to page 187)
I really hope that was a joke... I don't want Dtoid to end up like the IGN Comment section.
Marathon was good, Oni was half decent, and Halo series is one of the most successful franchises.
If that isn't a proven record I do not know what is
Does infinity ward have any other successful series besides call of duty?
Anyways I'd like to work with bungie, especially since they're multiplatform now.
Yeah Iwata, Kojima and... wait JAFFE? well whatever.
Anyways, if any of those three people made this job post the story would be MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger than this, so don't act like people are going 'gaga' over this.
it just means they don't want someone who wants to use a game writing gig as a stepping stone into writing for film, show, novel, etc. they want someone who wants the job because they want to write for games.
Yeah, which is a weird thing to specify unless they're trying to keep their writers on a short leash.
I'm intrigued but non-linear narrative is a very broad term. I'll wait until they explain how the narrative is non-linear before I judge. Still it is an interesting step for them.
I think it's less "short leash" and more that they want someone who is passionate and genuinely wants to work in games. Or rather, "interactive story-telling", since they want the story to be branching and non-linear. I've worked with people whose goals were to work in film, tv, etc, and not games, and I've found that more often than not, they put their own agendas ahead of the project. That's not always the case, but it has happened enough to make me prefer working with a team that's filled with as many people who are passionate and dedicated to working in games as possible.
It's a nod that they want someone who understands the differences between mediums, limitations as well as advantages, and can fully exploit them in this chosen medium--gaming. I'm glad they included it in the call for jobs, but I'm also really disappointed that they felt it wasn't common sense enough to be left out.
I think that line means they aren't looking for someone from the film, television, or novel writing pool. Also what mountaingorilla said. They want someone who can write a GAME not a movie that is going to be made into a game.
I'm no Halo fanboy, but I enjoy Halo. And after Halo: Reach, I hope Bungie fails.
This Activision deal is nothing more than a power move. Their next game will be an MMO. Fuck that. You can take your monthly fee and stick it, fuckers.
Which is certainly a good thing, especially if it means squeezing more lore out of the games.
Well, now they're Acti published I won't buy them on principle, but it's nice to see them taking a good route forward.
