Bungie is dialing in the Halo 3 ban-hammer

Bungie says that they're not playing around anymore when it comes to Halo 3, and is warning the "naughty" to get ready (for something) in a message called Harbinger of Doom.

There are those of you doing things you shouldn’t be in Halo 3. Some of you have gotten a little too famous for your own good. This ain’t a church and there is no redemption or salvation once you have been judged. Apologies are now officially too late to save you.

The storm approaches.

Love, Bungie

That's a pretty classy message in itself, but we like how they left it at that, giving no further details. Ars Technica wanted to know more, and found out through one of the members of their forum community (a Bungie employee) that the ban-hammer is almost ready to drop.

Forum member ferrex says, "Basically, we're almost done dialing in the Banhammer, and a few people who helped us test Phase One are about to help us test Phase Two."

It looks like they're cracking down on network attacks, and right now they're doing their best to make sure that no game issues will be confused for abusive behavior.

The end is nigh, cheaters.

Having gotten sick of Halo 3 already, what are these ban worthy things? Glitching? Camping? Being a general nuisance?

That IS a classy message. Coolpoints for Bungie.

Camping isn't a bannable offense. If your dumb enough to walk into that zone multiple times to allow a man to "camp", there should be a player banned but it certainly shouldn't be the man smart enough to pull the trigger every time.

Bungie is talking about DDoSers and network attacks. Things like slowing a person's network connection down or booting him.

Well then. It sure was worth banning all those people for the "hacking" rationale back in Q1... MS might as well have left them unbanned and they might as well have allowed them to purchase XBL stuff, when most people with mods wanted to pay for it. Genius moves all around!

Especially when you can't run unsigned code on a 360...

I have seen some "misterious" slow down, as in, the game would lag all of a sudden when my team was winning then it would stop lagging when the other team catched up.

I love Bungie. Finding humor in something like this is freaking awesome. They take Halo 3 seriously, but not enough to not have fun with the retards that feel the need to cheat to help them believe their E-penis is bigger than the rest of ours.

I too have had similar issues where I would be up by like a good 20 points but then the Almighty Lag would hit and I would find myself running into corners while getting asassinated multiple times. PRO TIP: Watch the film if you think you've been hacked on; look for who moves the smoothest first, then when the lag hits who moves smoothest then. That'll tell you that the new smoothest guy boosted his connection.

Personally, I find their gamertag and spam it with free porn offers from Cthulu. Don't think about that too much.

And how do you help to test a ban? Is like being the guy who volunteers to test a cyanide pill.

And more important: if they tested the the Phase One with you, it is a good sign they can test Phase two? Is like being twice a suicide bomber.

Phase 1: Steal underpants.

Phase 2: ?

Phase 3: Profit

Actually, I interpreted phase two to be the actual bannings... Maybe I'm reading into it more wit than what is called for.

Why do people cheat anyway? To prove how useless they are at playing normally like everyone else?

That warning was full of class.

This is the reason I don't play many multiplayer games anymore, at least in part. People can be such assholes at times.

This is why I like Bungie. Hate on Halo and call Bungie hacks all you want, but Bungie is a company with a sense of humor who really gives their all to their community. They seem to be good guys.

Incidentally, has anyone had connection problems with Halo 3, lately? It was nearly impossible to play last night, due to lag.

I'm thinking that the italicised "famous" would suggest that some members of the oO Infamous Oo clan who stole Skyluss (sp?) from Team Vbi's Recon armour may be at the end of this Ban Hammer.
