Bungie: Halo and Project Natal don't mix photo

So far, Microsoft's precious Project Natal has been associated with waving your arms and feet around like an idiot, and ... well ... not a lot else, actually. It certainly hasn't been associated with Halo, and franchise creator Bungie reckons that it just wouldn't work, at least with a proper Halo.

"I think that Natal has some really cool technology," says senior designer Lars Brakken. "Obviously it doesn't make sense to use Natal for a full Halo control scheme. At least in my brain I can't think of a way for that to work right now. That doesn't mean that it can't work in the future but I think Natal could enhance things. It's so far off it's hard to think about how it could work in a Halo game."

Hopefully, Microsoft will keep its original franchises as they are, and keep Natal for a bunch of gimmicky, "casual" crap in yet another failed bid to ensnare the soccer moms and grannies that Nintendo has under their thumb. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Master Chief's Crossbow Training appear at some point in the future.

I'm sure Microsoft will find a way and milk the franchise even more.

This is discouraging. If you can't "point and shoot" with Natal like you can with the Wii remote and that upcoming Sony wand-thing, then it probably wont interest me at all.

You can expect an on-rails shooter like House of the Dead in the future.

And it will sell.

Can't imagine a way to implement it? Easy: teabagging motion capturing.

Imagine the tight asses it would give our youth!

Screw Natal, if games are going this way then I really have to interest in the future of the medium. Motion control is garbage.

I have to agree with Jonathan here. While I remain unconvinced about motion controls in general, I'd at least like to use a controller of some sort.

Otherwise it just won't feel right.

@John: Oh, you probably, could, but you'd need a way to fire, and then, if it's not on rails, you'd need a way to move.

I'm sure someone can think of some ingenious way to do it, it's just going to take a whole bunch of brainstorming. And failure.

Why don't use the Natal and the XBox 360 controller together?

Microsoft needs to support blu-ray or I won't even consider it.

What Holmes said. Motion controls can enhance traditional games, but you need some sort of controller input, too.

I think Natal has alot of potential for more interactivity within the games themselves. What alot of people don't seem to realize is that you can use a standard controller in conjuction with Natal to improve the standard experience. People seem to play it off as thought it won't work WITHOUT a controller, and while it may be limited in that aspect, you can always use a controller or any peripheral it may recognize with it.

Project Natal can enhance gaming to be fun, but not totall replace traditional controls. A hybrid would be the best.

Over dramatic response, in my opinion. Woogity never said he'd quit gaming, he just prefers to not take part in the fad that is motion controls. Proper controllers will never die, so he has nothing to worry about: he has the right to choose not to purchase mediocre $50-$60 games that are attempting to be cutting edge.

Motion controls are not a fad but a new type of controller. Some games work with them and some games don't. We wouldn't expect someone to play Halo with a Rockband guitar now would we!

@Magnalon

"Over dramatic response, in my opinion. Woogity never said he'd quit gaming."

Not bashing your opinion but:

"if games are going this way then I really have to interest in the future of the medium."

Is a pretty clear statement of saying I'm gonna quit (Well if that to is supossed to be a no)

"have no interest in the future of the medium [of motion controls]"

I think the statement was pretty evident.

It's a little premature to deem the Natal a failure given it hasn't been released yet. Let it be released first so you can play with it. After that, then you can call it crap.

How would you use Natal with a normal 360 controller? You'd have to use both hands for the controller, & that takes your hands out of the Natal equation. Are you expected to do do the motion control with your elbows, legs, feet, & groin. New moves for Street Fighter 5 Natal Edition are going to be the elbow waggle, & the bollock bounce.

They would have to develop a single handed controller like the Wii-Mote or the Playstation motion controller, & that goes against Natal's no controller philosophy.

You could use it to peek around corners I suppose, or maybe simulate 3D like what they where doing with boomblox.

Can't think of much else apart from maybe some sort of mini game puzzles to open doors, but then Halo was neve really about that.

Ok, whine and moan about Nintendo for kick starting the casual/motion craze all you want, but when they decided to implement motion control, they said "Can it do Zelda, Mario, Metroid?" The answer was "Yes". If Microsoft doesn't take the same approach, I personally think this thing could bomb. To the "non gamer", MS is that company that makes that operating system that they'll always complain but never stop using. Sure, it's possible that they could dupe the masses into buying yet another fitness title (which at this point are practically flooding the market) but I just don't see it working out unless they find a way to get their core franchises on board.

Maybe Halo Wars? I don't think a hybrid would work so well. It would only add as much as the Sixaxis has, only not built in.

It's probably more of a safety concern than anything else. There'd be an epidemic of what would come to be known as "Halo Feet" by legions of little bunny hoppers...

For those that doubt the hybrid method, please tell me you have never leaned to the side to avoid a rocket to the head. Imagine your instinctual reactions in a FPS, helping during the game. I have fond memories of a friend of mine banging his head against the wall during a Quake 3 LAN.

This is good. I don't want to use Natal with Halo. Or any other game, for that matter. I don't see any use for Natal. Everybody's saying about it being revolutionary, but I just don't see it. All I see is Eyetoy, and everyone knows how interesting, useful, and fun that was. I don't want to be forced to memorize gestures, or flail my arms around to do things. I like my controller, with one button equaling an action. I can also use my controller from across the room. For example, I can play a strategy game while I make a sandwich. I just don't see any advantage, or even a cool factor to motion control, especially without a controller. I've been thinking of various genres of games and trying to figure out a way to use Natal with any of them, and I've come up short. Shooters? Definitely not. Strategy? No. Racing? Could be done, although not very well. Fighting? I guess, but most gamers would wear themselves out pretty quickly. Platformers? Yes-ish. I can't think of a use for Natal.

If anybody thinks that Natal will be anything but a casual push for Microsoft, than your insane. This is all about them trying to get a piece of the casual market. You're not going to be playing Halo, Gears, or Perfect Dark with Natal, but you will be playing Viva Pinata, Rayman Raving Rabbids 5, Boom Blox 4, Scene It, Lips, and of course Your In The Movies 2. Oh, and don't forget Milo! That's the stuff your mom, dad, and little siblings will be playing on Natal.

At least that's what Microsoft thinks will happen, I severely doubt it will work out that way though. Either way its still taking away resources from the Hardcore games to make all this casual stuff, so hardcore gamers will still loose out either way. Everything that people are complaining about Nintendo right now, will be the same complaints about Microsoft in a couple of years from now. Which is ironic because that's probably the same time that Nintendo will come out with their next console in HD.
