Let's hope this new game is good, Bungie deserves all the support it can get.
I don't really care what kinda game the develop. As long as it doesn't end up like Halo: ODST.
@Nobunaga
So you don't want it end up like the best Halo game? What an odd thing to say.
And that contract sucks, Activision has all the power on it and it reads like they want them to create a franchise that Activision can just bleed to death like the CoD series, putting faith in gaming rankings is pretty to.
And an untested IP in this day and age, I don't know, don't see much hope here, bad contract.
selling 5mln copies in 6 months? guys it's Bungie and the game is launching exclusively on Xbox360 and Xbox720. on launch week it will sell 1.5-2mln on 360 alone.
they're not penalized for anything,
they were given time to develop whole series,
they're given additional money to any future project they want to make(Myth 4, Oni 2 anyone?) even if it's not published by Activision,
they own the IP and have rather large saying in its future,
i love the "rage" over Quality Bonus - that has been a standard policy for many years now and everyone from EA and Activision to Bethesda is using it.
The deal looks ok for Bungie. Although they are being told to make the same kind of thing they have for decades, at least they have creative control over it and the IP. The Marathon sequel thing sounds pretty cool, but this "quality bonus" thing is a bad trend in game publishing. It propagates the attitudes that lead to mistreating these aggregate sites. But overall the deal looks alright. It could be at lot worse. I guess Bungie have some power when it comes to these kind of things.
It doesn't really sound like they're interested in doing much experimenting out of what they're famous for anyway if their pet project is a new, or remade Marathon.
Um... this line confuses me. Surely being an unacceptable developer in this term has nothing to do with the quality of games that developer creates. If it were, I think I hear Gabe Newell and Randy Pitchford laughing. Cliffy B is... grunting.
Poor little Bungie, all they've got is the one little multi-million selling enourmous franchise under their belt...
Thanks for posting this dtoid. Actual journalism. Now for Chris Carter to shit out some tripe and blatant lies about whatever personality we're all supposed to be hating this week.
Also, speaking as someone versed in high finance, business deals and legalese, all I can say is I'm very glad I don't work for a major publisher. This is an appaling deal, and big business in the gaming world is a very mean looking thing indeed. This is a deal that gives Activision all the power and all the money and shares it with Bungie ONLY when they sell absolute fuck loads of units and makes them trucks of money. And if they don't meet these deadlines, and don't get the carrot, you can bet your ass they'll get the stick.
Guess we'll see what they can come up with it but I'm not a fan of this contract.
Also, Bungie has never had a "hard time" making release dates. They have a 3 year cycle. They always have.
"Yea its Bungie, but that multi million dollar franchise was halo, an established IP.
Guess we'll see what they can come up with it but I'm not a fan of this contract."
Thats exactly how I feel.. It just seems like Activision wanted to scoop up Bungie in order to see if they still had some lightning left in that bottle. I don't know how it'll end, but I don't see how it can end good if -for some reasons- gamers don't latch onto this series like they did with Halo.
I mean, Halo was force fed to gamers because Microsoft had such a huge stake in it making the Xbox a winner, and it was a happy occurrence for all parties that it worked out so well.. Activision doesn't have that kind of "emotional" investment for this series to be a winner.. In fact, they don't have to have that kind of investment in anything at all as long as CoD is still going strong. But if this game/series doesn't do so well it's not going to be huge thing for Activision to ditch it like they'd ditch anything else.
