Bulletstorm PC requires persistent Internet (update) photo

Fans of PC DRM have something to celebrate today, with news that Bulletstorm will demand a constant online connection in order to be played. More like Bullshitstorm, right guys?

It seems Electronic Arts is going to "pull an Ubisoft" while "protecting" People Can Fly's ludicrous shooter from common thieves. The news comes from EA's own product disclosure page, where it states, "PERSISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION AND ACCEPTANCE OF END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY."

You'll also be thrilled to know that the game (which already snubbed the PC by not releasing a demo outside of consoles) demands use of Games For Windows Live, better known as the worst thing to happen to PC gamers since carpal tunnel syndrome.

PC gaming. You have to love it.

[Update: People Can Fly has denied this. Apparently somebody at EA screwed up somewhere and wrote down the wrong DRM on the company's product disclosure page. People Can Fly is looking into the mix-up. The official line is that the 'net is only required for initial registration.

Also, nobody has yet denied the mandatory Games For Windows Live chicanery.]

I was very unimpressed by the 360 demo, so this doesn't bother me at all.

More like 4 hours before it gets released. Well, too bad for them. I will not be buying this game. MvC3 here I come.

Looks like I'll be getting it for my 360, then. IF I get it, that is. Don't really play FPS's on consoles. But the demo was kinda fun.

Oh, good. Now I won't be so torn on what to buy, because I'll be pirating this. Thanks, EA! You really helped me out there.

If it doesn't go on Steam there's no way in HELL I'm getting it because I'd never pay full price for this game. GFWL has taken minor strides recently, though it's still clunky and useless, and the DRM is just plain bullshit.

OH WELL

stupid decisions like this is what convinces people PC Gaming is dead. Stop using GWL, and stop with the 'persistent connection' nonsense. I was planning on getting Bulletstorm, but I won't now just because of this.

Thank goodness! This will make my decisions so much easier. I was actually pondering on whether or not I should buy Bulletstorm. I probably would, had I not read this. For the record, I own a PS3, an XBOX360 and a PC and I'm not going to buy this game on any of the platforms because I support PC gaming and this is not how you treat your customers.

With the amount of people that pirate on the pc, not to say that there aren't pirates elsewhere, I'd do this too if I was them. Business is business. Gotta make money somehow.

I totally agree with you

BUT I have heard when you buy a used game none of it goes to the publishers or developers

so buy the game used instead of just pirating them

I'm pretty sure Games for Windows Live is Microsoft's strategy for getting more people to buy games on Xbox 360. Think about it.

I have a desktop PC at home and it is constantly hooked up to the internet...so my question is...how many people playing PC games play them while not connected to the internet? Is it that many people that all these hate comments saying how much it sucks is justified? I'm honestly curious.

Arrgh Matey!
Pirates will indeed get around this I'm sure... so they'll bring in different types of DRM (or they simply won't bother making ports for the PC in the future if it isn't profitable)

Guys read the source.
Bulletstorm Retail copy DOES NOT state it needs constant Internet Unlike the Digital copies where it does.
So their is still a slimmer of hope.
Even then yeah for digital owners this is a blunt insult to th PC community.

The constant Internet connection thing doesn't bother me really but GFWL? Fuck you. I guess it makes sense since it's an Epic game. Still don't want.

It's more the hatred is with the idea you can't play the game ANY TIME ANY WHERE you want.
EA servers are not too great to rely on in the first place.

GFWL requires a persistent connection IF you want all the achievements and stuff. You can create a local / offline profile to play with your GFWL games which works fine. You don't get your achievements and such, but if X-Box Live goes down, you aren't unceremoniously kicked from your game. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that is the 'persistent internet connection' requirement - for GWFL, because unless it has OTHER DRM outside of GFWL, then it doesn't really need it.
Damnation02's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/30/2011 11:21

@ ivr56

GFWL comes with every copy, that means retail too, so if you are not logged into GFWL, you can't save your game. Which makes playing the game senseless, which in turn means you have to have a persistent connection.

GFWL is malware, bloatware, it's like kryptonite to superman, like dead Nicole to Isaac. You get my drift, right?

if retail doesn't need constant connection than why ther fuck did they implement this pirates will just use the retail version and I don't see any other use for persistent internet connection.

Step 1: Point gun at foot.
Step 2: Shoot foot.

The objective is to reward consumers with special incentives, not punish them for piracy they have (maybe) not done, specifically with things that will be gotten around in what seems like minutes nowadays to pirates.

@Maurice "Keep in mind it's only the digital edition that requires this. Still bullshit of course."

As people have already said, GFWL is an instant turn-off. In addition, the EA validation servers are fucking awful. The past 3 EA games I have bought all have problems validating/connecting due to inundated servers (ME2, DAO, BC2).
