Fans of PC DRM have something to celebrate today, with news that Bulletstorm will demand a constant online connection in order to be played. More like Bullshitstorm, right guys?
It seems Electronic Arts is going to "pull an Ubisoft" while "protecting" People Can Fly's ludicrous shooter from common thieves. The news comes from EA's own product disclosure page, where it states, "PERSISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION AND ACCEPTANCE OF END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY."
You'll also be thrilled to know that the game (which already snubbed the PC by not releasing a demo outside of consoles) demands use of Games For Windows Live, better known as the worst thing to happen to PC gamers since carpal tunnel syndrome.
PC gaming. You have to love it.
[Update: People Can Fly has denied this. Apparently somebody at EA screwed up somewhere and wrote down the wrong DRM on the company's product disclosure page. People Can Fly is looking into the mix-up. The official line is that the 'net is only required for initial registration.
Also, nobody has yet denied the mandatory Games For Windows Live chicanery.]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
"1 month and pirates will get around this, and windows live?? ewww no thanks"
More like 4 hours before it gets released. Well, too bad for them. I will not be buying this game. MvC3 here I come.
More like in 3 days.
OH WELL
Shame about that but I was getting the 360 version for the gears 3 beta anyway.

then explain why there is no DRM on Nintendo consoles
I totally agree with you
BUT I have heard when you buy a used game none of it goes to the publishers or developers
so buy the game used instead of just pirating them
Pirates will indeed get around this I'm sure... so they'll bring in different types of DRM (or they simply won't bother making ports for the PC in the future if it isn't profitable)
Bulletstorm Retail copy DOES NOT state it needs constant Internet Unlike the Digital copies where it does.
So their is still a slimmer of hope.
Even then yeah for digital owners this is a blunt insult to th PC community.
It's more the hatred is with the idea you can't play the game ANY TIME ANY WHERE you want.
EA servers are not too great to rely on in the first place.
Bulletstorm, You shit the money bed. CliffyB needs a shot to the face.
GFWL comes with every copy, that means retail too, so if you are not logged into GFWL, you can't save your game. Which makes playing the game senseless, which in turn means you have to have a persistent connection.
GFWL is malware, bloatware, it's like kryptonite to superman, like dead Nicole to Isaac. You get my drift, right?
Step 2: Shoot foot.
The objective is to reward consumers with special incentives, not punish them for piracy they have (maybe) not done, specifically with things that will be gotten around in what seems like minutes nowadays to pirates.
As people have already said, GFWL is an instant turn-off. In addition, the EA validation servers are fucking awful. The past 3 EA games I have bought all have problems validating/connecting due to inundated servers (ME2, DAO, BC2).
