Perhaps you're right. Perhaps this generic character template is most identifiable by most of the western population.
But what about the rest of us? What about the black haired, slightly overweight, slight dark skinned people like myself? Or thinner white blonde people? The gaming industry doesn't seem to be concerned about them anymore. So what are we supposed to do? Accept that the industry is leaving them behind in favor of a more common market?
Unfortunately, that's the conclusion I've reached. I'm no longer what they would consider a traditional gamer, it seems.
To me, the interchangeability of these games are already a reality. These characters aren't appealing physically, which means I have no reason to take the time to invest in them personally (or financially, for that matter).
Its not that I'm shallow. But if there's nothing appealing about a character despite the articles, screenshots, etc, why would I buy that game? Why would I take the time to play it? Its not a person I'm buying here. Its a story, its an adventure, and its a hero. If none of those strike my interest, then I will not look into the game any further. Which is why so many of the games Chad pointed out ARE interchangeable to me.
The same goes for Marcus Fenix, Nathan Drake, Scorpio, and Assassin's Creed (they all look like Desmond, regardless of name and setting).
Then there are issues like the fact you can MAKE A DIFFERENT SHEPARD; Solid Snake is an old, wrinkled man with white hair; Heavy Rain has FOUR main characters, only ONE of which is as you describe; the guy in Too Human has huge blue cracks in his face (certainly breaking your description); not to mention all the baldies and clean shaven dudes on there.
I'll clean your list up a bit for you, yeah? I'll even ignore the fact that some dudes are, in fact, bald or clean shaven, but I'm going to list them by CHARACTER instead of title, to avoid any sort of padding:
Alan Wake
Edward
Desmond/Altair/Ezio
Nathan Spencer
Grayson Hunt
Frank West
Chuck (who is blonde, but I'll give to you anyway due to the nitpickyness)
Sergeant Jet Brody
Marcus Fenix
Ethan (who I'm only counting as 25% of an entry)
Cole McGrath
Scorpio
The Prince
John Marston
Nathan Drake
I omitted Chris Redfield because he isn't contemporary, and your article contends that this is the "new" face of "modern" video games. Chris has been around for 14 years. Also, Solid Snake was omitted due to age, but he also comfortably fits into the same category as Chris, and this redundancy allows for no argument of his exclusion.
So, your total is 14.25. There are, legitimately, 14.25 people on your list who belong there based on your guidelines.
Are you serious? There are more than that amount of colorful, multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-sexual characters in a single itteration of Final fucking Fantasy (I suggest XIII, as it is both "new" and "modern"), let alone the rest of the modern gaming era!
I mean, do you want me to list some for you? I think you do! I'll even avoid the Final Fantasy series, or any RPG for that matter, as it seems a bit unfair. Fuck, just because I'm feeling charitable, I'll only ever list ONE character from any given game!
Rosa - Deathsmiles
Monkey - Enslaved
Naughty Bear - Naughty Bear
Death Spank - Death Spank (action games with RPG elements are still action games!)
Young Thor - Young Thor
Zak -OR- Wiki - Zak & Wiki
Wylfred - Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
Makoto - BlazBlue
Rubi - Wet
Pick one! - Ninety-nine Nights or the sequel!
Here's 10, I could keep going, but I'm sure you can see my point. I also ran the gamete of systems, including DLC.
But, whatever, here's your page hit...
On the bright side I think the characters personalities are quite distinctive, Nathan Drake might look like Chris Redfield but they’re nothing alike. Of course there’s still the fair share of “grumble, grumble, let’s shoot shit” characters that look like this, but a lot of them are so forgettable that they wouldn’t even make your list.
True, but if he didn't have those characteristics, do you think the designers still would have modeled the character after him? If Nolan was a short, pudgy black guy, would the designers still have used him as influence for the character design?
I never actually noticed this.
probably because i'm a white male in my 20's
... who happens to be unshaven and have brown hair.
also..
make it so.
Dude, what you got AIN'T stubble. That shit is full on jungle.
@Chad
You spend too much time giving disclaimers in your articles! You need to just rage a little more!
Hilarious feature, I loved it!
@ SBC Slam - Of course you can name a million characters that look different, but those games you listed aren't AAA Action/Adventure games. You may argue "Oh well that's very specific" - well yeah, but LOOK AT THEM! THEY'RE THE SAME GUY!
Anyway, as a brown haired, stubble-faced male myself, I can see both sides of this. Obviously the developers are looking to appeal to the widest demographic (and Nathan Drake is one of my favourite game characters in years), but, like others have said, if I have the chance to customise my own character I never recreate my own appearance. I've just started playing Dragon Age recently, and I'm playing as a red haired female Dalish Elf.
Either way, cool article Chad. Keep 'em coming!
Sure there are many games out there with characters who don't match the mold. But how many of them are AAA titles? When people, gamers and non-gamers alike, think of video games today, what is the face that comes up? For most, it is certainly not Ninety Nine Nights, nor is it Young Thor, and certainly not Naughty Bear. These aren't the faces of the gaming industry.
So what are the AAA titles that do get the exposure? The ones that do get to the mainstream media and represent gaming today? The vast majority of games included in your list certainly aren't it. Not that they aren't good games, but they certainly don't have the same level of budget, hype, and team behind it to be considered a AAA title.
Prior to this generation, "AAA titles" were Mario, Sonic, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy (which is indeed still prevalent today), even Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet & Clank.
What are the AAA titles and the face of gaming today? Pretty much Chad's list. As much as I'd like to say that Naughty Bear's face is the one I think of today's gaming generation, it just isn't. It's an interchangeable stubbled face with brown hair.
...Which actually may also be Naughty Bear too, now that I think of it.
I kid, I kid. Though... not really in some cases. But at any rate, I can see what you mean, but I think it is indeed a very 'on the surface' dealy. Most of the characters you showcased, while very similar looking, have very different personalities. And I think that's what matters most.
But, thinking again on that, the "white guy with brown hair and stubble" thing is probably just the easiest look to sell. But, as said, gladly, most of them are different in their personalities.
And yes, I CAN name a hojillion characters that don't fit the bill. THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT!
Great article Chad!!
And what group of people is known for not taking care of its image quite as well as possible? Gamers? Perhaps some of us don't shave on a regular basis?
I would not be surprised at all if the brown hair/stubble look is not a coincidence, nor is it evidence of a lack of creativity, but a conscious design decision in order for the player to feel more connected to the character.
"I am just genuinely curious why almost every main character in every major modern action/adventure release has to look EXACTLY THE SAME!"
Those games weren't very different, but the characters were. Personally, I'd prefer varied games with the same guy than the same game with different guys.
Sure, I'm overstating the historical issue, but in case you haven't noticed, the "off-brand games" feature has had almost exclusively pre-2000 games, contrasting with the list of "brown hair and stubble" games, which are almost completely recent releases.
Ultimately, though, this protagonist (who I think should have one name to cover all his roles, like actors have) is used as a placeholder, basically. As long as there's a main character, we care more about his relation to the world (read: OUR relation to the world) than we do about the character as a person.
Point taken, but I still disagree. His contention is that creativity is in danger, my contention is that it moost certainly is NOT, even with all of the most highly recognised characters in tripple A titles, and the colorful, plucky designs left to the games that don't recieve a ginormous marketing heave-ho. I mean, I said I wouldn't bring RPGs into it for the sake of fairness, but if you really want creative, colorful, tripple A characters, look to them.
The lack of color and creativity in tripple A action titles - one single genre, mind you - doesn't mean you can extrapolate that the entire face of the industry is in some sort of creative Code Amber.
PLAGIARISM!
J/K Chad I love you you all original cutie pie you.
Oh, and you forgot the guy from Dark Void.-

Cool article, although I kinda wish you hadn't spent half of it trying to be diplomatic and worry so much about offending anyone: Just say your point and let people deal with it.
Also, I would like to point out that another "average looking guy", Special Agent Francis York Morgan could've and should've been on this list.
*Most gamers are white stubbly males
*Most gamers will "identify" with main characters that they personally resemble
I'm not arguing this - but I do think it bears deeper examination. Are these things really true? They aren't for me, but I'm aware that I'm in the minority in more ways than one - still I'm skeptical of most generalizations that I don't have statistics for.
I mean, if you question a gamer directly, would the bulk of them say "I mainly like games about people who look like me?" Or would they be willing to try anything as long as the gameplay is fun?
If the latter is the case, then it would seem like maybe character designers, developers, marketing and publishing folk, all the people who contribute to greenlighting these characters, are actually out of touch with what people want. And THAT would be a problem, if you expect them to come up with ideas you want to play.
Of course, these studies haven't yet been done, as far as I know, so it's all speculation at this point.
And hey, at least it's a step up from the sexually ambiguous spiky-haired teenagers of yesteryear!
Who knows what the future will bring...
Alan Wake has been in development for 5 years, Chris has been in existence for 14 years now, and Naughty Dog actually wanted to make sure to nail that average looking hunk down to a tee.
Desmond is from Middle-Eastern decedent and is suppose to look rather average looking and it works for him.
Frank West's hair is black and Chuck's is of a dirty blond. To think about it, both their jackets have the same color as their hair.
Commander Shepard's Male Design is suppose to be, as Vin Diesel's short movie would imply: "Multi-Facial". Now guess what that means (or find the movie on YouTube).
I was more given the impression Fenix's hair is black, not to mention he's always supporting a bandanna. Not to mention his face is that of a badass who's seen far too many battles for any human being to go through.
Jesus christ, what have Ubisoft done to you, Prince!? Though even then, that Prince has been around since 2003.
Cole's original look would have made more sense if it was actually seared from the Ray Sphere's blast but the prequel/semi-sequel online comic book showcased him with that design.
MGS4: =|....
We don't care about Alone in the Dark or Too Human so why should we care about their design choices on the protagonist (you know, if they had good game design then perhaps we would care)? Yeah, Nathan Spencer's look is a no go, and at this point, I don't think anybody cares about what the character from Just Cause looks like other then given the excuse to blow stuff up.
Now, for upcoming games that feature new and interesting characters that seem to be more then templates to the player, then yeah, we probably do have an issue on our hands.
Good read that article, cant say I noticed all the similarities, but I only have a 360 now so havnt played many PS3 games.
