Broken record says that Castle Crashers patch is coming photo

Hey, remember that patch for Castle Crashers? You know, the one that was supposed to fix the data loss bugs and the online multiplayer issues? The one that they promised would soon be here roughly six weeks ago and yet still isn't? Yeah. You can see where I'm going with this one.

Once again, The Behemoth is stating that they're "reaching the end of the process," and "can't really comment on the release yet." If I remember correctly, that's damn near exactly what they said last time.

It's been three months now and, frankly, I'm out of patience. I shouldn't have to log out of Xbox Live in order to restore the save file that took me weeks to earn and now is inexplicably absent from my account. And then, I should be able to start a game with some friends and actually be able to play it with them for more than five minutes before one or all of them are dropped.

I've continued to recommend the game to friends in spite of these issues under the assurance that they would be fixed in a reasonable amount of time. That's done. I simply no longer care. The Behemoth is going to have to re-earn a lot of trust and respect from me because this whole situation is completely unacceptable. I don't normally cry out for free DLC -- the market has made me accustomed and even excited to pay for it in many cases -- but I had damn well better be getting something for my pain and suffering. A wait of this magnitude to fix a broken game makes me feel like I've been cheated. Bamboozled, even.

I don't give a damn who is at fault here, either. I've seen title updates come and go for a dozen games in this time, games that I have far less interest in as a consumer. Microsoft and The Behemoth both need to get off their f*cking asses and get this goddamn thing working.

Agreed. I'm so sick of people defending the developers, this really is getting ridiculous. Gears 2 had a patch out within little more than a week to fix online issues.

Gears 2 also has a staff larger than a few people. But yes, I too am sick of waiting, that game is incredible, but yet I still haven't even finished it because my save deleted like four times. Laaame.

Maybe The Behemoth could use a little bit of the XXXTREME $$$ they made to hire a few more people to get it said and done. That is, if they haven't snorted it all already in the luxury bathroom stall in the Super Awesome Indie Developer Club™.

j/k.....?

I don't get why the patch is taking so long really, I know they're a small developer but for a single fix to take this long is a bit odd. This bug may be causing more problems in development than we know.

Either way I wanna play some castle crashers online already, and I want my save game back too :/

They really dropped the ball on this one. To be honest, I'm sort of regretting purchasing the game to begin with. It was fun, but the online issues made it almost impossible to really enjoy the game as it was meant to be, with four person co-op. I rarely see anyone playing it anymore, and I don't think they're going to start again now.

I beat it offline with a few friends so luckily I got my enjoyment out of it. I probably won't play it again when the Live bug is fixed though.

Meh. I don't really care. While yes, the online did have problems with logging people out all the time, I actually missed the deletion of leveling and whatnot because I was busy. I love the game regardless so eh.

alright, im gonna play both sides of the fence on this one. i do enjoy playing online and it is shitty i've had to wait this long for a fix for this game. and in regards to compensation i think that those of us who bought this game before the fix came out should be getting the new characters and weapon i've been hearing talked about as dlc for free. that being said. i really think that the game is actually best enjoyed offline with three other people plunked on the couch with you playing together in the same room.

It's funny because I was really torn between using "hoodwinked" and "bamboozled" but was convinced via peer pressure that the latter was more amusing as a word.

my deep respects to Tom Fulp and Dan Palading, but I think this took too long to release. Most of my friends stopped caring since the errror appeared.

A friend of mine broke her hand shortly after the first "microsoft has it, any day now guys!" statement. We'd joked about which would be fixed first: her hand or the game's network issues. I honestly didn't believe her hand would win.

Wow, they really should have mentioned if there was some major issue holding back their bug-fixes a lot earlier. If they're just stalled, explain why, if not, they've obviously failed to deliver.

Most indie games I play have bug fixes that solve unplayability issues within a week, or even a few days of release. This is a bigger issue, but if it's a big problem, explain why and compensate. Since I can play an awesome game that actually works as advertised for free, that's the minimum I'd expect for a paid game.

I'm not saying they had to fix this right away, but that they need to communicate why they're not able to, no matter who it burns.

" It’s all really frustrating since we can’t be completely open about every little detail that goes back and forth between Microsoft as we’re not supposed to comment on the certification process and what bugs were fixed, and how long everything takes, and every other detail that we’re desperately willing to discuss. "

as you can see, emil has already written about how we're frustrated that we can't talk. i think we're on the same page with that one, and i am sorry.

Wow, the man himself. Nice to see you here man, I <3 your art.

On a side note, I fortunately didn't have any issues with memory, and when I played online, I did it with two of my main XBL friends who coincidentally live in the same province as me and we had no issues. I'm looking forward to this patch so I can play randomly with friends when we're bored.

We do that all the time with random XBLA games.

Fuck The Behemoth. Even if it gets patched, do people even play it online still? Or is it just 99's farming under level characters and giving them free stuff? I still feel like I got my money stolen from me so, fuck this shit. I couldn't give a rat shit if this gets patched now or not.

I love the game, but this has been a real bummer. After losing all my saved characters, levels, and weapons, I've had no desire to start over from scratch, knowing that it could happen again. I guess I'll pick it up once the patch comes through, if anyone is still interested in playing.

The worst part is that The Behemoth was the toast of Destructoid just a few short months ago, and now almost every comment here is negative. Are we too fickle, or is all of this deserved?

The game is fucking awesome game... Online issues aside, its easily top 20 material for xbox 360 games, both arcade and non. But its ridiculous now guys. And what pisses me off more is that when the patch comes out they are probably gonna charge 5 dollars for some "new weapons" which is really just art that has been done since before the game was out.

Only way i would go back and try it online, is if you give that DLC for free. I mean, about 70% of people who waited until 3 A.M. drunk after a party, huddled around the powerbrick waiting for the game to pop on xbox live(yes, thats me), probably wont go back and play it for more than one level just to test out the LIVE portion of the game.

TL;DR

I am hC22 and i approve this (Conrad's) message.

@danpaladin

Did you guys hire more people since the release of the game? It would have really been a good idea to hire some coders to help speed up the bug-fixing process with the warehouse of moneys you guys made with this game.

I don't understand how it became acceptable for any developer to release a game that isn't complete, and charge money for it. That just doesn't make sense. Just because the internet is around to make patching easier doesn't mean it's OK for developers to make an incomplete product, sell it, and then fix it.

Also, cocks.

my stages of interest in Castle Crashers:

1) PUMPED!!!
2) oh wait, it's broken? poop.
3) hmm… i'd better wait for that patch before i buy
4, 5 & 6) still waiting…
7) don't care anymore

sorry, too late. unless the title update magically makes this game popular for online play again (which rarely happens with XBLA games no matter how good they are) then i'm out, and The Behemoth/Microsoft have lost a sale.

I believe that Behemoth has always had the best intentions and that they're trying their best to get things done right. That said, the handling of the situation is atrocious. Castle Crashers is dead to me, its life cut short due to the co-op and date-loss issues. It's pathetic. I understand that they're a small company, but this really should've been done within a few weeks of release.

Also, Conrad, Behemoth finished the patch, like, a month ago. It's been waiting for Microsoft to certify it. Maybe something came up?

I still love this game, and I still can't wait for the patch, but it is really lame that it's taken this long. I really really hope they make the new character DLC free (at least for early adopters) just to make it up to us a little bit.

Seriously, it took how long for the Gears 2 patch to make it through all of the necessary steps? Like three weeks? This is unreasonable. I have actually driven twenty minutes to Kyle's house just to play this game multiplayer, and I shouldn't have to.
