Never seen a Broken Pixels episode? No? Well wtf have you been doing with your life? If you're like me and have nothing better to do on a fine Sunday evening, then I suggest you finally get aquainted with the crew of Broken Pixels as they continue to Mystery Science Theater 3000 the game industry. As funny as that was, they pretty much set out to make Red Steel look as bad as possible by purposefully not trying to play the game the way its meant to be played. The sword-fighting is by no means good, but they purposefully didn't listen to the directions and basically just fucked around the whole time. Funny though

All I saw was a dude that really sucked at Red Steel. I think the professional reviews just hate the fact that they sucked at learning a new way to play FPS's, and that's why the amount of hate for Red Steel. They're used to dominating in Halo 2, and now they're all noobs likes the rest of us with a new way to game. Sort of like going from a single analogue stick in GoldenEye on the N64 to two analogue stick's in Time Splitters on PS2 back in the day. Definitely a learning curve. In any case, when you get good at the controls, Red Steel can be a ton of fun. Sure, it's got issues (terrible cutscenes, bad acting, dumb AI, etc.), but overall, it's fun...and isn't that the point of gaming?

Funneh...
Previous posters, you seem to have missed the point. It was a comical skit, in the vein of MST3K, not a serious review. I mean, summa didn't even flame anyone in this post. Quit while you're ahead!

That was great. Had to control myself to not wake my parents in the next room I was laughing so hard. Good stuff. I'm definitely checking out their other videos.

Hey Brad Drac,
The whole reason Red Steel is on the show Broken Pixel is because they're saying it's broken. I've watched the show many times and know what calibur game they try to put on it. I'm just saying the game doesn't deserve to be put in the category as games that due deserve to show up in Broken Pixel.

These need to come out more frequently. And Seanbaby needs to update his site more than twice a year.

And while I'm at it, Old Man Murray needs to come back from the dead. Especially since they prophecized The Warriors game years ago, and Prey actually came out.

Yeah, my only complaint is they don't do enough of these. If you've never seen the other ones, WATCH THEM NOW!

Myxzptlk, Old Man Murray ain't dead -- they work for Valve, now. Who do you think is writing Portal?

Also, Seanbaby is probably the most powerful force of unfunny in the gaming world. Gimme Sharkey any day of the week.

-> whos0ever: I haven't played red steel(although I would like to try it), but from the majority of the reports I've read on it, it has hiddeous voice acting & story, difficult controls and innumerable glitches. Basically, it's not exactly going to win many awards, and it's not exactly grade A. It might be fun "when you get used to the controls", but they clearly hadn't in that video.

Besides, it wouldn't have been terribly funny if they were sitting there going "you know, this is pretty fun." A lot of people think this island earth is a very good film, that doesn't make the MST3K movie any less fucking hillarious. All I was trying to say was, don't let bullshit like fanboy bashing or wii defending get in the way of a good laugh. Life is way too short to take anything you see on the internet seriously.

Red Steel is a mess. It takes a special breed to support that game.

I don't support the game (i stopped a friend from buying it), but these guys are going out of their way to make it look completely unplayable, when that's just not true. Broken Pixel is about playing BROKEN games, Red Steel just doesn't qualify for that level of shittiness IMO. My friends and I got through half of the game and genuinely enjoyed it, granted because we were laughing at the ridiculous voice work rather than complaining about it. The only thing that pissed me off about the controls was the sniper rifle, and the swordfighting. We got pretty damn quick with the regular weapons.

All I'm saying is that, while I understand its meant to be comedy, they're also portraying it in an over the top negative way, only highlighting the faults of the game. Give the game a chance, I know some people that like it.

@ Aaron Linde:

I'm well aware what Chet & Erik are up to now (and Erik's involvement in Psychonauts), but Old Man Murray as a site has been dead since 2002.

Scott Sharkey is funny, I won't disagree there. I will highly disagree with you that Seanbaby is unfunny, and overall I like his style a little better. My interweb comedy tastes are going to have to differ from yours sir. :)

@ Ignignokt01:

Summa & Brad Drac already made the point it's about MSTing the games rather than offering a fair and balanced review. Also notice they're goofing around and drinking beers during the thing. You might be taking this a bit too seriously. ;)

The Wii needs to start making games that do more than (replace A button with any sort of hand gesture)

I didn't take it as a review, and while I am taking it more seriously that it was intended to be received, you can't deny the fact that they're putting the game in a very negative light, despite the humorous overtones. Whatever, I'm blowing this out of proportion and I'm sorry.

Ignignokt: Nah, he's serious. To Summa's credit, Red Steel truly is horrible. To his discredit, he only likes 4 or 5 games of all the thousands ever made anyway.

"Red Steel is a mess. It takes a special breed to support that game."

I guess that is me. I just finihsed the game for the second time. I have started to go throug it a third time. I am having a blast. You are right the game does have some big flaws. But I have mastered the gun play and sword play. Somethings in the game like the melee stab move requiring upward movement of the numchuck are brocken. But most of the other parts can be perfected. I have completed the game with both the happy and sad ending. The game does have a fun story; but it has been executed pretty poorly as far as visual presentation goes. Some of the early story voice acting is pretty grating and it is cheesy like a 70 action movie. But I guess I always wanted to be a Gaijin Samurai . Anyway that is my two cents. Take it as you will.

P.S. I just got AAA ranking on the last mission. Samurai rank for me hooray.

The Wiimote makes all mediocre games awesome. Doesn't everyone know that by now?

Too bad I could only get the first 1/5 of this video to play. Even on broadband streaming videos never seem to work right.

There's been plenty of games most people consider bad or mediocre that I've found to be pretty decent. Some people can be far more forgiving of a title for one reason or another. I've seen several fairly positive reviews of Red Steel, although very few people can deny the game needed more time to be refined. It is a launch title after all, and it was rushed to meet that deadline. After all the crap I've seen, I'd still like to give it a rent when I get my Wii.

@Burnt Meatloaf:

What browser are you using? I can never get GameVideos clips to work right under Opera, try FireFox or IE if you aren't already. Maybe try updating your flash too? The site has always been a little weird for lots of people. You could also try going right to the main page and searching for Broken Pixels.

I bought Red Steel and am not disappointed in it. It isn't the best game or even close to perfect but definitely much better than a 4 or 5 rating. I'd probably go as low as 7.5

Well I thought this vid was hilarious and I too would have to drink a bit to play Red Steel. In all fairness though I understand that some people really fall in love with a game regardless if it's panned by critics etc. Additionally Red Steel was a launch title for the Wii with a new control scheme...but if they make the same mistakes in the sequel well I may just have to go on the offensive.

I promise that this will be the least productive thing I say all day, so here it is:

Sean Baby sucks, is the exact opposite of funny, and needs to be shot. Preferably in the head, just to be sure he's dead.

To even vaguely compare these guys to the gloriously funny cast and crew of MST3K (BEST. SHOW. EVARRR! - chris bot) is a mortal sin and worthy of a swift kick to the nuts.

Fair point about the comparison to MST3K. None of the imitators have ever come close. That Cheap Seats show with the Sklar Brothers needs to be killed with fire.

I thought it was pretty fucking funny, and definately comparable to MST3K. Definately not as good either, but it is the best aping I've seen, and for games too(bonus points).
