British baroness thinks videogames destroy lives photo

It's about that time of the week where we have an ill-informed opinion on the "dangers" of videogames from someone who is completely out-of-touch with reality. Enter Liberal Democrat Baroness Walmsley, who has thrown games and DVDs in with booze, weapons, gambling and drugs as one of the things that "destroy young lives."

"Knives, guns, certain games and DVDs, alcohol, solvents and gambling," she argues, "are all very harmful and can destroy young minds and young lives." Her nobleness was joined by the Conservative Lord de Mauley who added that all those things, including games, were restricted with good reason, due to their "various harmful effects."

Of course, the House of Lords is made up primarily of very old, very rich individuals who have no idea how Britain actually works, despite their power and elevated status. The idea of these pampered nobles talking about British culture like they know a damn thing about it is pretty bloody funny.

It's also amusing to see nobles talk about videogames destroying young minds, as if their generations of inbreeding haven't had a much worse affect on the brain.

Jim, don't give them any ammunition to go out and buy some game consoles. They'd probably claim it on expensies just like those chandeliers and swimming pool repairs...

Oh yes video games are destroying young lives. So i guess video games are the reason why i havent gone to college and not the simple fucking reason that going to college for 4 years will cost more than 5x what i paid for bloody house.

Or maybe it also that the public school system is so simple that people dont even have to try and play video games to get challenged.

Lord de Mauley have a shotgun mouthwash. (Don't google that)

I say tear down the House of Lords and build a rec center for the kids. (with an arcade)

1) Technically she has a point, she never said all games/DVDs.

2) We need the Lords at this present time - more than once they've stopped ridiculous legislation getting passed which we have no say in. Until it comes to the next election they're pretty much our only beacon of sanity in the legislatory system.

Baroness Walmsley is not a heredrity peer, she is not the stereotypical Conservative, pampered, noble toff that people think of when they think of the House of Lords. None the less, no matter how good her intentions, she is not a democratically elected official and she is stating opinion derived from sensationalist British media.

The government should be trying to improve kids' quality of life; educate them about and deter them from gang culture, stop incompetent parents buying GTA4, an 18+ rated game, for their 10 year old kids - not spouting headlines from the guardian.

Make a broad statement, expect feedback from broad people.

If the people are dependant on a system that's fundamentally broken/unfair, then the people should wean themselfs of such a system or fix the system for the better.

But what do I know?

CAN I HAZ RECON? LOL BEWBS!

Am I the only one wondering where the hell Destro was during the Baroness' speech?

Also, do note that while the Baroness mentioned knives, guns, certain games and DVDs, alcohol, solvents and gambling...she didn't say a word about drugs.

So drugs are ok by her?

When are these old farts gonna die and let the next generation take over. I'm tired of old people in powers, using their ancient ideals to tell us what's right and wrong. When they still live in the past.

In her defence, she did say certain games and DVD's. Not all games and DVD's. And I certainly think certain games would be better off not in 10 year olds hands. Stuff like Manhunt, or GTA4.

Rather a shame to see the gaming media jump all over this one.

@ Uzzy
the problem is that the industry is self regulating and dosent need goverment interference the problem is stupid parents buying the games for their kids
i remember when i was a elementary that parents were giving the kids who were under 10 porno but government cant stop stupid parents from doing that and its gonna be the same deal with video games there is no control over stuff that happens in your home
whenever i go into game stop there is at least one kid being denied the sale of a game that is rated m and all he does is go out get his mom and have her buy it for him

What i understood from what she said is social networking, dvd's and games can have an impact on a developing brain (in an interview with the guardian she said both positive and negative) and she called for some research into the impacts those things can have on a persons thought process. her mistake is simply lumping them in with things like drugs and weapons then calling for research rather than showing evidence to support her claims... regardless Transvestite Santas is win.

Sure, there are some bluebloods in the House of Lords, but pretty much the first thing Labour did was get rid of hereditary peers. There are a few left, and having met a couple, they are indeed colourful characters (read batshit insane), but the rest are fairly young (in comparison) and are appointed lifelong peers (which means when they retire or die, someone else gets appointed rather than the title going to their next of kin). I spose the most high profile appointment of the last 10 years, was Paddy Pantsdown, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats?

My point is, yes they are old and they wear silly wigs, but they're not inbred, they're not wildly out of touch, and as CALkulon said, without the house of Lord, Britain would right now be locking people up for 42 days without charge, and would be subject to all manner of Ministry of Love despotism.
