Splash Damage's Brink is a game I am very much interested in hearing more about, and from the look of it, I'm not alone. At PAX, not only did the demonstration booth for the game fill up, but the crowd of intrigued gamers even managed to spill over into other booths as well.
Beyond just the unique look of Brink, which, seriously, you need to see in motion, some of the game's mechanics have also got me all hot and bothered.
From the S.M.A.R.T. system (it stands for something) that automatically makes your character traverse obstacles so you don't get stuck in the middle of a gunfight to Splash Damage's emphasis on mixing single-player with online play, I am pumped for this game.
If you're half as excited as I am, you should go back and read our previous coverage of Brink. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Not sure if want. But then again, I'm the kind of person who's spent years perfecting all of these special trickjumping techniques, so of course I'd be skeptical.
from the developers splash damage website on brink desciption:
* Virtual Texturing
BRINK's proprietary technology, Virtual Texturing, breaks new ground on current-gen consoles and PCs with an even greater focus on highly detailed characters, realistic environments, lighting, effects, and atmospherics. This competitive lead on the squad-combat genre helps thrust players into the gritty reality of the Ark's epic secluded arcology.
need I say moar? ;) Don't be surprised if this game doesn't come out until after Rage releases, unless id Software doesn't want to release their engine with their flagship game first. Which could very well be the case.
It wasn't a rumour, Brink is on idtech4 and confirmed, feel free to ask yourself on the splashdamage forums.

Just look at everything that the UE3 can do, until Mirror's Edge I thought the only color it could render was brown, but I was wrong =P
@DarkangelUK - That is some heavily modified shit if you ask me..I mean really it is impressive to see it go that far.. I thought what Raven did with id Tech 4 on wolfenstein was beautiful enough, now its pushed to this? I just cant believe it..the only reason why I'm skeptical at the whole thing is why spend so much money and time on developing a new renderer, new development tools framework, and work on multicore support on an engine that is 4 years old when they could easily have gotten id Tech 5 (which has ALL of that, plus multi-platform support) from a developer they have worked with for 4-5 years, and have had a good track record with. Not to mention are now developing for a studio that is under the same owner of id Software. It just does not make sense to me in that aspect.
But I can understand that Splash Damage has extensive knowledge of the id Tech 4 engine, I'm just so impressed by how far they have pushed that tech that it seriously looks to the level of Rage in terms of visual detail and lighting. I really wish they would talk more on what they did with the engine because I am really interested in that.
Because even now Tech 5 is still under development and not ready to be distributed to third parties, this was explained by carmack himself.
Brink has clearly being in production for a while now, probable even before the Tech 5 engine was revealed.
Speaking from a technical point, coding the renderer is easy, it's the other stuff, such as the memory management that is hard to program so I think that's why they opted to go wit an existing engine and modify it where needed.
Anyway, I agree that what they have acomplished is impresive, I did not know this was possible with tech 4.
Just so ruu don't think roar comment went unnoticed.
