Breaking: Ziff Davis gives FileFront the axe photo

Ziff Davis has had a busy year. Waves of angst were felt through the gaming community over the loss of EGM when Ziff Davis sold 1UP to UGO -- many of us grew up reading that magazine. Today, another shocking dose of news comes with FileFront closing its virtual doors. As you can see above, the reasons are economic. Not a surprise, but it's still deeply troubling to see such tried and true sites go down like this.

UGO was unfortunately uninterested in acquiring FileFront, which probably led up to this turn of events. It seems surprising considering the site was actively used (and clearly enjoyed) by so many people, but it's hard to know what may have been going on behind the scenes. In any case, it's sad news indeed. Were any of you FileFront users?

Dammit. I saw it earlier today on their web-site and thought it was perhaps a sort of lead-in April Fools joke.

FileFront was awesome when I needed to download a demo or a patch and didn't feel like dealing with shitty download speeds or waiting in-line for 30 minutes.

Well, sounds like the end of the Ziff Davis is Relevant chapter. I hope they tank. Mostly because it doesn't make a difference to me at this point.

Man, I loved filefront. With no registration required and short waits (if any), they were like Fileplanet done right.

I'm getting a little tired of hearing "due to the current economic conditions" or similar. How about "due to ineffective and short-sighted management" or something similar? At this point it just strikes me as ridiculous to keep blaming the economy because it's becoming a self-fulfilling prophesy (as in, things are going to get worse so we better cut back... oh look, things got worse).

I was never an avid user, but if I was missing a DLL or if I needed BIOS for an emulator, FileFront was usually a safe bet to have what I needed. It will truly be missed(by pirates).

@SpiralGray: I'm with you on this "due to the current economic conditions" thing. It's getting so old, and video game companies have absolutely no excuse to use this. Video games sales are the best they have ever been.

You might be tired of hearing about the economy, but that's probably because it isn't effecting you directly. Shit is still rolling.

Nice, they still have ads running on it just to see that you clicked past the ad for nothing...

Filefront is child's play for pirates. This will hurt most for the average gamer.

Entertainment is fairly immune to recessions because people use them as an escape from the bleakness of their lives (movies were EXTREMELY popular in the 30s). What's next, going to tell me that "due to the current economic conditions" the liquor store closed?

Bull fucking shit. This is the only decent file website on the net. The only one. I'm not even being sarcastic; I refuse to download my files from any other website because Filefront is so fast and effective.

Goddamn it.

Um., Do you people think Ziff closed FF because it was so profitable? Businesses close business units when they are losing money and there is no prospect of it. They wanted to sell it...UGO didn't want it...gee I wonder why? Maybe because it was a money loser. It doesn't matter how much USERS liked it...if you cant sell it and its losing you money, you shut it down. FF was acquired to complement the game group which Ziff sold...so it had no place anymore and no one wanted it. And people, just because games are selling well, doesn't mean game media is doing well. Think about it. How many big console makers are there out there advertising. Two. How many big software developers that actually have ad budgets? Handful. Gaming media has a future online, but its a no slam dunk...its hard, and as gamers you should be better informed about what drives and supports the industry...rather than acting like a bunch of whiny brats. Nobody needs to go broke so you can have free downloads. And yes, economic conditions are affecting all media, in big way. Look around. If Ziff were a cash cow in every other respect, and times were good, maybe they'd keep FF around and try to make something of it. As it is, I'm sure they need to focus on their core businesses that make money, and keep the larger company employed. Maybe Destrucoid should buy it then? It's a good fit, and I'm sure ZD would still be happy to get something for it! Why not?
