In yet another absolute shocker, Valve has confirmed that it still has absolutely zero interest in Sony's Black Box o' Blu-ray, stating that Left 4 Dead isn't coming to the PS3 simply because ... well ... nobody at Valve wants to have to port it over.
"We look at it as if we were customers of this product, how would we want to be treated and what sort of product would we want out of it?" explains Doug Lombardi. "We've run a couple of experiments over the years of PlayStation in general; we did Half-Life on PS2 with an outside company and then we did Orange Box PS3 with an outside company. We weren't able to deliver the same type of product on PS3 and PS2 for that matter that we were on the 360 and PC.
"If you look at it as a matter of Valve doing it, Valve did the 360 and the PC version of the Orange Box and they both go 96 on Metacritic -- The PS3 version was nowhere close to that. Left 4 Dead got an 89 or a 90 on 360 and PC ... Until we have the ability to get a PS3 team together, until we find the people who want to come to Valve or who are at Valve who want to work on that, I don't really see us moving to that platform."
Don't feel bad, PS3 fans. As Lombardi says, they're really considering you in all this. By not porting Left 4 Dead to the PS3, they're really saving you from playing an inferior product. If anything, Valve are heroes in all of this and you should really be thanking them. Sony fans, next time you're in Seattle, send Valve a card and be bloody grateful for once in your lives!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
You know, AT ALL.
Doesn't surprise me, really. Valve have always been the "Don't force anything, push it out if its good" etc company and I AM A TOTALLY BIASED FANBOY LOLS.
The internet community has a lot to learn from you, Jim. :D
Come to think of it, they might be...
They created Half-life 2, which is awesome, but since then they have essentially just modded it. Nothing particuarly wrong with that but it's odd that they are sitting on a potential gold mine (Left 4 Dead would sell millions on PS3!!) and fail to do anything about it.
Buying for the PC, then I know I get the updates, with consoles there is always a doubt. So even if they made a PS3 version, I would still buy it for the PC.
I agree with what he's saying and Valve make games I love so they can do no wrong for me but has someone at Sony fucked someone at Valves wife/husband or something. They go on about how much they don't like the PS3 almost every day it seems.
Well whatever, hurry up with Episode 3 please :)
As someone whose seen a lot of the crappy ports on he Wii please understand that if a company don't think they can make a good game don't force them to make a really crappy one. God some people are whiny little dicks.
Everyone knows if you whine about it and call Vavle lazy pricks every two seconds they'll do exactly what you want! It's the law![/sarcasm]
crappy games on the wii have nothing to do with a company being lazy so why even bring that up? if your going to make a judgmental comment about how the consumer complains about getting screwed at least make it make sense. the fact is if you make games for a living you have to learn all platforms. watch next gen when MS goes blu-ray, what'll Valve do then? Probably go back to PC only and get pirated into bankruptcy. look ay Ascoro (creators of Sacred 2) if they had released the PS3/360 version of Sacred 2 along with the pc instead of 6 months after the fact, they would'nt be bankrupt.
and i like valve's approach - go big or go home. i'd rather have valve keep focus on the pc and fine tuning their approach. don't want them to lose focus and fuck it up for the rest of us. this isn't ubisoft here.
I'm not convinced next-gen will have a built in drive. What's with the double post about Ascoro, nothing to do with anything that's happening here. Oh and Half-Life 2 sold MILLIONS on PC alone, I'm pretty sure Valve aren't worried about going bankrupt [i]if[/] they had to develop for PC only.
Sorry to go on but I'm getting sick of hearing Valve are lazy, you make a game and let me play it.
sorry man but they've got no talent. come on milking Half Life 2 for over 10 years is lame, L4D is just a modded Half Life with lots of zombies, and when it took them over 10 years to MAKE Team Fortress 2, laziness is shown. and what go big approach are you talking about. if they were to "go big" as you so eloquently put it they would have made Half Life 2 Episode 1, 2, and soon 3 as one big game. And for the final kabosh on my point, if Valve has so much talent then how come there are more third party mods for any valve game then first party? frickin free loaders
You might have to turn down the resolution, textures and nerf shadow effects, but boo-goddamn-hoo if its so important you go online and troll Valve.
And you're posting on a Mac, most recent Macs can run Windows via boot camp, and if you can't do that, I'll refer you to the gimped PC crowd of having no one to blame but yourself.
Play the PC version , it's the only one that deserves to be played.
ah, well I'm looking forward to getting fallout 3.
same thing is happening with splinter cell: convictions, sony is kinda losing out on exclusives but it now has different ones but they are not selling and.. arrrgggghhhhh!!!! godamnit i hate these stupid console wars, just so stupid.
I'm still not sure what the big deal is about Valve. They've got some legitimate talent over there and they make good games, but nothing that really blows me away. Just good solid games that clearly were well thought out and iterated over many times, but that I still don't enjoy as much as games that are in development for a third of the time.
And Gabe Newell is a big fat idiot. So maybe I should give the rest of the company more credit since they clearly have to overcome that with every title they put out.
i've played it and it was great... i can't afford a gaming pc or a 360 so i can't really notice any difference AND i don't care
i just wan't great game on the systeme i have, the fact that there's a better version on an other platform won't make me buy a 360 (i just can't) BUT i will absolutely buy a "not so perfect" version for the systeme i already have (especially if not perfect mean orange box ps3 quality)
maybe...
Can I just make a tiny point?
Valve doesn't handle the console ports of games, iirc, EA does that.
Valve decides if they go on console or not, but I /think/ they do nothing other then that.
but I can see why people are calling them lazy, they have said this so often and with so many others easily creating good ports , its starting to seem like an excuse.
Valve IS a fucking hero, corporate entity and I still say they should punch people in the junk for calling ill against them.
We at Valve are so good at making AAA games. That we suck at making AAA games.
I don't think "subtle" means what you think it means.
Orange Box on PS3, outside company...not only fail, but fail in long term support.
you know.. I'm seeing that the problem is the whole 'outside company' thing. I give Valve props for trying, I'm sorry it's taken them this long to say "look, we're not doing it on this console", and for all the times I have played a port and thought "why did they even bother hacking together this ported POS besides the desire to take my money?"... I'm glad Valve is manning up and saying NO MORE to shitty ports.
My mind puts it this way: You're doing decently with 2 fanboi sets, why piss off 3?
We dont have a team of PS3 programmers
Last time we outsourced a port of one of our games, it sucked
Therefore, unless we have an internal PS3 team, we will not support the platform
Oh and by the way no one at Valve gives a hoot so, not going to happen.
It's not as bad as it sounds. To make something, you need to know how to do it. They don't have any team for it and will not trust anybody else for ports. I can understand that.
Yep. Thats pretty much the same with me. Oh, that and I love how they reach for excuses no matter what.
It IS a little shitty you can't get L4D. But it seemed to imply that they wanted to port it, but either can not or do not want to cause hassle for something that, with their other port selling not-that-great, less profit. I predict eventual porting, followed by crappy sales, followed by no more porting, followed by whining.
