What is hilarious about what you just said is that you admitted firmware updates fail when you say piracy killed the PSP. Considering the PSP had the same updates, and you claim piracy killed it, we can assume that Sony doesn't protect itself and, therefore, we can continue to complain about these useless updates.

I've had a ps3 for almost 2 years now and the firmware never takes more than a minute or two to download.

Seriously ditch that thing, you clearly don't enjoy having it since you keep hinting that it's a waste of money.
Seems that a lot of people are missing the fact the the only thing this update was released for was to patch the recent exploit- which doesn't even jailbreak the device.

1) I never said that a number of these updates aren't for preventing piracy and system exploits. They discourage development by publishers and developers due to the increase/existence of piracy. Look at the PSP if you need proof of that.
2) Some of these fixes are so obscure that most people aren't going to figure them out, even the hackers. A lot of this stuff has to do with specific titles or features. If it doesn't add something tangible, it's usually written off as piracy prevention, which is inherently ignorant and largely false.
