Jim since you are good at Firmware, will you post your impressions with us?
I hope so, otherwise they're just milking the Firmware franchise...
We all saw it coming when Sony didn't pull the game though. This is Sony; they HATE unauthorized code running on their systems even though its ridiculously easy to do
And the industry moves on.
Oh whoopie a firmware update once in a while, I turned on my PC yesterday and had 13 updates that it downloaded and wanted to install.
How about doing a post every time Windows has an update, you'll soon realise how petty and insignificant these posts really are.
Compare the frequency of PSN's updates with XBL updates or Wii/3DS updates. Also compare the length of time each update takes. And the amount of significant changes that come with each update.
Regardless, even if other systems were just as bad, it's still an annoyance.
At least Jim is having fun with the whole thing.
Most companies that do firmware updates keep the process as rare or invisible as possible as to not frustrate or stymie the user. On top of that, they often add features and stability making the use of an iPhone or 3DS more enjoyable.
360 misses the mark on this at times, but the do add feature, stability and keep the updates rare. Pretty much the same as Windows in many respects.
But Sony's firmware updates are frequent, sometimes cause new problems, sometimes add features while other times taking them away and "stability" is not explained.
So we don't know what we're getting and must corroborate our experiences with others to sort out what Sony did.
It's a bit screwy.
The best part is they block PSN if you're on 1.8 to give you an incentive to update, as if people playing Cave Story on their Vita were hurting anyone
HAHAHAHAHA, the best defense you have is comparing it to a PC with potentially thousands of third party software each with the capability of independent updates!
Anyways, I'm just curious if these are mandatory installs. If they are optional then maybe Jim is overreacting, but if they shut off PSN service like I'm guessing, then Sony really needs to come off it. My short experience with a PS3 had me waiting 10 minutes as it downloaded some patch/firmware for a damn DEMO
Lol save your condescension. I'm well aware of how dreadfully annoying updates are on Sony platforms. We're all well aware of that fact. Believe it or not, Jim Sterling didn't break that story. It's not news anymore.
HOWEVER, now that we're stuck with same software platform the PSP established in 2004 which was largely carried onto the PS3 and Vita, would you rather have problems with your device and not get them fixed, or would you rather have them fixed? It's a simple question. You can make all the analogies you want to other platforms, you can talk about how great it is in a different ecosystem, but at the end of the day, this is what you got if you bought a Vita.
Do you want your shit to be broken, or do you want it to work? Cause I can guarantee you the second the Vita has a software problem there's gonna be a 200+ comment article here with people bitching and moaning about it, and Sterling will be right there to write the snarky, sarcastic content of the post. And where does that get anyone?
And please don't pull the hacking/emulator/"homebrew" card. I've seen you on this site a lot, I've spoken with you before, so I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're more intelligent than that. Let's not get into that debate.
Everything has updates weither you like it or not. Obviously sony products seem to push them more than others.
Majority of complaints is that it takes away the freedom of a machine. Good! Kill off those fucking pirates. And fuck homebrew because it isnt worth the problems.
Another complaint: takes too long. Dont blame sony on that but your shitty internet.
And as unecessary as most of these firmware updates are (valid complaint) the vitas updates are no where near as long and takes seconds to install.
Plenty of stuff in your post is questionable, but I just wanted to address the "shitty internet" part. How do you explain when people have Xboxs and PS3s, where the xbox literally updates within seconds and I hear nothing but horror stories about PS3's updates? Or how do you explain Jim's anecdotes about it taking upwards of 40 minutes to uninstall a game, which happens independent of internet?
They need to port these updates to the PC ASAP!
*Insert shut up and take all my money .jpg*
Bullshit. It's shitty PS internet. Xbox 360, PC, and even Wii updates take way quicker than PlayStation ones. It's fucking embarrassing.
Is better" I am not 12. All i said was I haven't had any problems.
It's a fact dude. This update has been ripped apart and its sole purpose was to close homebrew. Regardless of how you feel about it you have to understand that the most illegal thing you can do on a Vita right now as far as homebrew goes is run a SNES emulator because of the lack of access permissions available to coders through the PSP exploits
If you think that taking away features from the system because Sony perceives it as a potential loss in revenue is ok then I don't know what to tell you except you're looking like any other know-it-all 4chan kid who really knows jack all about business or programming
Also Sony's servers are throttled which is why it takes forever to download stuff. That's pretty annoying too, mostly when you're a digital customer trying to avoid getting slapped by another dead Sony format next-gen
Whether or not you want to believe it, "improves software stability" is generally code for trying to prevent homebrew and piracy exploits.
Sony does it, and Nintendo did it with every Wii system menu update. Nintendo would sometimes sit on a minor improvement that they could advertise, but the menu updates were largely driven by attempts to stop homebrew exploits. And Nintendo eventually stopped bothering with minor improvements. (Heck, one of Nintendo's "improvements" to the Photo Channel was to *remove* its mp3 playback ability.)
People involved with homebrew and piracy take these updates apart to see what they do. They have to, to see whether or not the updates affect their exploits. And they are quite willing to report when an update does nothing (or almost nothing) besides try to address homebrew/piracy. (Though in the case of Nintendo, they seemed to have extra fun giving such reports, because the reports also tended to include the news that Nintendo had botched the patch job either by ignoring other exploits or simply getting the patch wrong.)
