MAG has received a tame “Teen” rating from the ESRB.
According the Ratings Summary provided by the watchdog via its official Web site, the most graphic things players will see in the game are cute (and instantaneous) clouds of red after being punctured by a weapon and any postmortem damage after the fact.
“Soldiers can be shot repeatedly, even after they have fallen to the ground (i.e., postmortem damage),” the summary reads. “When an enemy is shot or knifed, small red puffs of blood are visible (under 1 second on-screen).”
On the audio side, players will be forced to hear the word hell “several times during the game."
I assume this rating was expected from Zipper Interactive who have been coding the massive shooter during the day and dreaming about it at night. But I was surprised it received that baby rating. I associate simulation-style warfare with “Mature” content -- an association that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Ghost Recon is always “Teen.” Same with the Delta Force games and even some Rainbow Six titles. In fact, even a few SOCOM games have been given this rating.
Little puffs of blood. A cloud of red. No chainsaw-to-face awesomeness or excited screams riddled with juicy expletives in MAG. But, of course, online interactions aren't rated by the ESRB -- so we could totally make it Mature if we wanted to. Or something.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This quote deserves a Rev Rant.
Ok seriously, no big deal. The shooter that I spent most of my time with online this generation is not "Modern Warfare" or "Halo" or "Killzone"- it's "Battlefield: Bad Company". Amazing multiplayer (and fun single player as well)- and it's a T-rated game. Blood and gore and guts and F-words don't necessarily make a game "mature" (and they especially don't make a game "good"). So whatever MAG, bring on the crazy 256 people battles.
Rofl as for language I would plan on hearing far worst in less than 5 minutes of playing.
But if there's 256 people in the match, I doubt you're going to have time to care about puffs of blood.
Man, fuck America. We've got too many crazy ass morons here.
There's probably gonna be plenty of "Mature" dialogue online to make up for the "T" rating...
And sex scenes, don't forget about those.
Except you're the guy who sounds like every annoying person you've ever met on XBL insulting you and it DOESNT FEEL NICE
This game isn't going to look like Uncharted 2, so hears to hoping the gameplay is really really fun. I'm counting on it.
It's also pretty much online only (aside from the mysterious "training" mode), so any "Mature" content will pretty much be the online chatter.
I think that the T rating is fine for the game. Warhawk is rated T and has one of the best online communities around.
Really? you'd want a team full of teenagers in a multiplayer shooter that requires a significant amount of teamwork. ;)
Most bad language in a game (as far as rating boards are concerned) comes from the single player campaign, which MAG doesn't have.
This isn't a testosterone fueled, chainsaw wielding romp through an alien army, this is a team based combat sim. YOU make the story, YOU make the dialogue.
I'd consider the soundbyte "I can't take the pain!" from a wounded soldier bleeding out (which is a little overused by the way Zipper) is worse than the word "hell".
Cannot wait for the full game....
Have you played the MAG beta and the BC2 beta? I was lucky to be in on both. I soon uninstalled the BC2 beta. While the swearing was fun and the gameplay solid, the maps are huge and need more players on them. MAG is what BC2 and MW2 should have been.
What a biased article by people who haven't been in game. Seeing bullets fly back and forth, a game launching showing 256 players... unreal. If you get this, you will not be disappointed. Oh... and no lag.
<i>WTF</i>
....seriously, What the FUCK is up with the BB code on this site? And why have date stamps been taken off comments?
