Breaking: EA Chicago closing doors? (Update) photo

Word from reliable industry sources are indicating to Destructoid that EA Chicago (the studio responsible for Def Jam Icons, Fight Night) are closing its doors. Said to be part of the "restructuring" that tore apart Mythic last month, over 150 employees wait in limbo today as word on whether they will be let go or transfered to another studio are discussed in meetings.

Kotaku is reporting similar news, and their source has told them that the forthcoming Def Jam Icon sequel has been canned, with the future of the previously announced Marvel fighter up in the air.

No official word from Electronic Arts, so we'll treat this as a rumor, but it's coming from fairly reliable sources. We'll keep you updated as more details come in.

[Update: I have no idea when Geoff Keighly started writing for Kotaku, but he's confirmed the studio closure with Electronic Arts today. The confirmation includes a memo from EA Games president Frank Gibeau, who goes into further detail.]

I agree with SLiFE. While Def Jam and the shitty Marvel games can go the way of the dodo as far as I am concerned, I need me some more Fight Nights.

I support SLiFE's comments 100%.

I really didn't care for Chicago EA, I'm just here to wish the birthday boy another wonderful year and many more years of gaming to come.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

And I'm hearing that Fight Night is safe, and being worked on at another EA studio.

Disappointing, I like walking by there and looking at all the slacker employees playing in their totally sweet break room with standalone arcade boxes, ping pong tables, pool tables, and so on.

But how will Kudo Tsunoda (if that's his real name) be able to afford all of those un-removable sunglasses?

It's good that Fight Night wont be dropped (how could it?), but the other developers working on it had better not fuck up the formula.

And Happy Birthday, meng!

After what those assholes did to the previously awesome Def Jam series, they can go to hell for all I care. EA better wise up and bring AKI back to make more Def Jam games as they're the one who made them good.

I actually did care about the new Marvel fighter. I just didn't have much faith in EA Chicago. The clips of the game I saw actually looked pretty good even though it looked like it was falling into the same trap as Def Jam (ie. sluggish controls). I'm sure that will get moved to a new team as well though since it's a licensed property.

Thank. God. I was dreading the impending release of the Marvel fighting game. Hopefully the game will get shuffled to a better developer.

Let me explain something; Captain America can NOT throw Juggernaut.

EVER.
