Breaking! Bayer announces glucose meter for the DS photo

You heard me. This is big. Whip out your Twitter-enabled phones and start typing, folks. The next high-tech peripheral to come to your Nintendo DS is a GLUCOSE METER.

Seriously though, it's coming. Bayer is actually behind manufacturing it, and it will plug into your DS or DS Lite and allow you to test your blood glucose. It only works in conunction with two games though (Knock 'Em Downs: World's Fair and Mini Game Arcade), so let's hope you own them already or plan to go get them. You can't just go rogue blood glucose testing without the proper equipment, you know.

By testing consistently, kids can unlock points that can be used for rewards within the two games such as buying items and unlocking levels. The machine itself is called the Didget and will retail for around £29.99 (roughly $50 US), and £5 of that will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It isn't on sale in the US yet, but you can buy one if you live in the UK.

I intended to poke fun at this thing, but it actually seems it would be really useful for diabetic kids who also happen to have their DS permanently fused to one hand. In other words, awesome.

Oddly enough, and sadly, this sounds like it would be pretty useful for my sister.

not just kids... old people have DS units too (Brain Age!) and this might be a very good tool for them as well. Both my parents are diabetic.
(Now if I can just talk my Mom into trying a DS, I'm betting she would love many of the word/puzzle games!)

Sweet! Ever since I lost my health insurance from work I've been dying ( kinda literally) for a way to get a cheap meter. Now if only it came with free samples of insulin...
