Breaking: 1UP acquired by UGO, EGM is officially no more photo

Yes, folks, the rumblings were true: 1UP has been sold by Ziff Davis to UGO Entertainment and its parent company, Hearst Corporation, including 1UP's associated Web sites GameVideos, MyCheats, and GameTab.

Sadly, the acquisition will undoubtedly result in many layoffs, which is something we never want to see in this or any industry. Further adding to the sad news, Electronic Gaming Monthly has made like Batman's parents and will no longer be in print as of the current January issue.

All jokes aside, EGM was one of the last great gaming magazines, and while it's not shocking to see the publication come to an end, it's still an unpleasant sight to witness.

As for the 1UP acquisition business, we're already getting word on some of the casualties, namely the 1UP Show. I have always been a supporter of the show and I can safely say that it will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to all of those who are now out of a job.

I stopped picking up EGMs a few months after Shoe left, and haven't used 1UP in even longer, but this is still very sad news...

I always read EGM right before I go to sleep. I wake up with it covering my face in the morning. I'm sad to see it go. Print is indeed dead.

Back when I first started reading gaming magazines, EGM was one of the ones I favored. Then, I found magazines I liked better or were more tailored to my particular gaming interests.

Then I got a decent internet connection. I havent bought a single magazine since. So, not too much of a loss from my point of view.

Also, about Broken Pixels, watch it/DL it while you can:

Earliest episodes are pant-splittingly funny.

This really sucks. EGM has been my favorite mag for a long time. I have been subscribing on and off for years. I still have few months left in my subscription too.

R.I.P. EGM. Best of luck to the crew. :(

Sucks, as 1up is the only game site I go to for reviews. Gamespot has always pissed me off (They gave Majora's Mask an 8.3. Majora's Mask. 8.3), and IGN has sort of lost sight of what they were trying to do, not to mention they totally ruined their site like a year and a half ago. I'm not crying over it though. My taste in games has veered strongly away from that of reviewers, even the ones at 1up.

Their getting rid of EGM, 1up Yours, and The 1up Show. It's the day the gaming died.

This is kinda sad.
It just seems like the end of an era. EGM was a real institution when it came to videogame magazine. I guess it's not going into nostalgia territory.

Well, lets hope they get back on there feet like Jeff and the Giant Bomb crew did after the gamespot.com fiasco. Hopefully we get a new site from these guys and they could put out a new podcast, again, like giantbomb.com

Wow.

This is horrible. I've been an avid follower of 1UP Yours, Broken Pixels, and the 1UP Show. I always looked forward to new episodes each week and the way Ziff handled this just screams of TechTV all over again. Cherry-picking Garnett (understandably, because he rules) while laying off some of the best in the business.

Hopefully, Giant Bomb has some spots open, but what I'd really love is another independent review and discussion site. That's asking for a lot, but damn it, I needs my weekly fix of Shane-isms and ridiculous stories of the gaming industry.

RIP EGM

And as if I didn't need another reason to despise UGO.

Crap. I never read EGM but always respected it for not going out of business like Game Players Magazine did (which resulted in me having a de facto subscription to Next Generation for a few months, blech).

This is truly terrible. 1UP was easily the best non-blog gaming site on the web. 1UP Yours was my absolute favorite form of video game media (no offense DToid).

From all the various blog posts and Twitters by now-former 1UP staff members, there seems to be an undercurrent that the whole story has yet to be told and that many of them will be willing to tell it in the near future. I will be painfully eager to here how this all went down.

This is a good excuse to post a pic of my early EGM issues and make you all cry.

I subscribed to EGM from 1988 to 2003. To me it was the best gaming mag ever. Remember when it would arrive in the mail, in that plastic sleeve. It was all shiny and new. What gaming news awaited you inside? You'd open it and smell it inside. It had that new mag smell. It was magical to receive EGM in the mail. Yes, I'll always have fond memories of taking a crap and reading my latest EGM.

I used 1up for a couple of months awhile ago. It was pretty classy.

I always imagined that the games owned/wishlist function they have over there would be kinda what Niero would be implementing here in the future.

That would be nice.

First CGW and now EGM! My life as I once knew it is now officially over. What is even more sad though is that kids today won't ever experience the generational leaps that technology brought and the excitement that reading magazines like these provided. No, kids today didn't have to suffer through long load screens for a 4 color CGA picture that went beep beep before arriving at something on the level of Bioshock. Kids today can't appreciate the journey that these magazines provided. I know that sounds like something my grandpa would say but it is true. The thing I wonder now is when someone will invent a time machine that we can all use to relive the golden age of gaming because it is now officially over?

Nooooooooo! I used to love watching the 1up show back in high school, especially on the weekends and on sick days, where the theme song always had just a bit more meaning. They will be truly missed. Now I'm gonna have to go watch the episodes I missed and reminisce about the good ol days.

I knew EGM would go, but that's a lot of prominent staff members of whom I listen to on a regular basis that just lost their jobs. I wish the former 1Upers luck in finding new work because I believe the staff is a talented group and I enjoy hearing/reading what they have to say regularly.

Unfortunately a small-staffed site like Giant Bomb wont be able to house anyone from 1UP, but I hope IGN scoops a couple of these guys up and I hope a quality enthusiast press outlet comes of this.

Damn... the memories I'll have of EGM... Stuff like Sheng Long, All Bonds, and even the features like the Sushi-X-Files and that epic 3-piece poster of the first hundred issues make me look back and realize how big of a player EGM was in the business. It's a damn shame it had to end like this :(

Man, this is lame...Even though I prefer Game Informer, I read both mags religiously, been reading EGM since pretty much the start, ha I remember reading through EGM after growing up w. Nintendo Power. It was a night and day difference, the definition of good gaming publication vs. Nintendo Powers mediocre mag. R.I.P. to the mag and I hope the writers/editors get on somewhere else.

There were 3 gaming sites whose podcasts I used to listen to regularly: Dtoid, 1up and Game Theory. Dtoid is the last man standing, so now Podtoid, RFGO and Podcastle are more important than ever.

One of the things which sets this site apart is the provision of (often excellent) free content from the userbase - stick to this model and we should be on the right track. With this in mind, I am inspried to write my first Monthly Musings this month. Long live Dtoid!

Oh, and UK-ers, you can bet that Edge is currently facing a similar struggle for its own existence, as are most UK mags which don't feature celebrity gossip......
