Johnathan Blow may claim to not care about Braid's success, but he must surely be grinning from ear to ear over the adoration that this game has received. The official blog for Braid is proudly displaying its Metacritic score of 92, marking it out as XBLA's highest rated game of all time. Yes, it's even better than the likes of Undertow and Bliss Island!
Destructoid has just added its own Metacritic-syndicated score to proceedings, and with a glowing 9.7 review, you can be sure that we won't be making a dent in Braid's impressive numbers. Blow is also quick to point out that the game released a week prior, Geometry Wars 2, achieved the highest overall XBLA rating upon its own release, meaning critical success for Live Arcade as a whole. With Castle Crashers looming overhead, the love for XBLA games is sure to continue.
Braid's score marks it as the 10th highest Xbox 360 game of all time, placing it above such games as Mass Effect (YES) and Rainbow Six: Vegas. Achievement unlocked for Johnathan, methinks. According to the post, the sales data is also quite good with 28.5K sales. Hey, it's not GTA IV, but the numbers are nothing to sniff at.
Also, before you say anything -- yes this IS the third Braid story to hit the frontpage in a handful of hours.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

STARTING...
NOW!
Congrats Jonathan Blow
Braid or LittelBigPlanet will get a GOTY on many sites this year.
I tried the trial and have mixed feelings.
1) backgrounds and animation look AMAZING
2) protagonist and some of the enemies ... not so hot. reminds me of this free mmo fighter from 10 years ago.
3) I hate it when there is no "run" button in platformers. Even though Tim moves quite fast, it's not fast enough.
4) he can't jump when he's climbing. Another pet peeve.
5) I'm sure the "Leap of faith" level was supposed to be ironic and all, but the jump killed me, thing no welldesigned leap of faith isn't supposed to do.
6) I hate the music. It sounds like the royalty free stuff that some freeware slideshow software uses. Really annoying, it's dreamy and mellow like the worlds, yes, but its also bland as hell. Something more suited would increase my enjoyment tenfold.
Overall based on the demo and even though I LOVE platformers, this is a no-go for me, sadly.
Can we just declare Dtoid's 2008 GoTY now and have done with it? If need be, we can all pretend the rest of the year doesn't happen.
(As a huge plus, that means we'll all be able to avoid the inevitable disappointment when Spore turns out a bit meh.)
FOOOKIN AMAZING Game, just loved it!! Reminded me of my Amiga, 2d platformer for the win!
When i get some cash im buying it, oh as a plus my GF loves the music so she happy too...haha
Braid is a must buy! Spread the word people.
This game is not a platformer as it might appear. It's a puzzle game. It's designed. There are no juvenile "cool" things you can do. You don't get a rocket launcher, you don't get to turn into a raccoon and fly. It's completely designed. The music isn't gonna rock your face either. It's a mellow game with beautiful mellow music.
And the leap of faith was suppose to teach you that you can rewind and "fine tune" your moves if need be.
Somethings telling me you ran right through the demo level and didn't get all the puzzle pieces.
Try it again, this time though...play it like a puzzle game. Cause that's what it is. You can get every piece in that level.
Also, wheres Rev Ant? Shouldn't he be comparing this to Shadowrun and then claiming he doesn't try to make a habit out of bashing games?
*splooge*
I don't have a problem with the price of Braid. The problem I have is that I've been saving 800 points just for this game for months. Then it comes out and it's 1,200. Ok, not a big deal...except that Microsoft tries to fuck you over by not selling points in 100 point increments. So now I gotta buy 500 points and leave 100 points on my account for nothing.
I don't have a problem spending money on quality games. It's when I feel that I'm being screwed out of my money (i.e. Microsoft's idiotic point system) is when I have an issue.
But, what else do they have planned for the rest of the year? I'm sure Castle Crashers will last me a while, but what's after that?

You can buy points from the Zune Store in 200, 400 and 800 point increments.
I just want to point out that while Braid did beat out Mass Effect by 1 point and 1 spot on the chart, it beat out the highest rated Dynasty Warriors game by 31 points and 297 spots on the chart.
