Braid to be boxed, released in retail wild this January photo

Texas-based "casual games" publisher MumboJumbo is set to brave the retail waters with the PC version of Braid. Set to arrive this month, this packaged edition of the game won't have extras. It will, however, cost an additional 10 bucks, as its packaged price is locked in at 20 bones.

Digging deeper, Joystiq has discovered that the usual line-up of retailers is set to carry this piece of indie success -- your Wal-marts, Targets, and Best Buys, as well as several other big brick-and-mortar joints, are said to be a part of the distribution. Great. Now how well can this thing possibly sell?

How much was it when it first came out on XBLA? I can't remember if it was 1200 points or 1600.

I'm pretty sure it was 1200.

Hold on, people that are interested in this game don't already own it?! This is ridiculous, let release the same game at different times on multiple platforms over the span of two years, and then and only then, will we release a physical copy of the game...

That's really really... dumb. It's like the same deal with Plants Vs. Zombies retail, you get nothing extra and just pay more for a cheap cardboard box. What's cool is that people know that these are digital distribution titles, and don't even care to purchase them in store. But more power to indie developers who can get it boxed out, but kind of defeats the purpose of being unchained from a publisher and having more profits go to the developers.

It's on PSN, Steam, XBLA....I figure most people that want it already down it.

Does this mean it can come out for Wii now?

@jorge I doubt that.

Typical of a game that involves time travel, they're publishing it backwards!

I would buy this if a retail version was released for ps3. I dont like downloadable games so will never buy it off psn. I dont buy pc games much either.

I thought the PC version started at $20, even for download. Maybe I was wrong.

jorge: Might be a little too hardware intensive for Wii.

Well, there are still some people terrified of downloadable games, and ones who blurt a cornucopia of excuses not to own a credit card, so yeah, it will probably sell like 6 copies

Actually, having both, a downloadable and a boxed version could work quite well for indie devs.
You could make a "premium" boxed version of your game, package it like PC games used to and charge extra for it, and still put it for regular/cheaper price on xbla, psn and steam.
Could work imo...

It was $15/1200MSP when it first came out like 18 months ago on xbla. This is a pretty old game to be being released physically now, but I guess it does have a small amount of people behind it.

Well, I guess there's the large majority of people that don't follow gameblogs, own consoles or have steam that may be interested in some quirky game named "Braid" sitting next to the box copy of The Sims 3.

And considering The Sims is the biggest selling PC franchises, isn't is safe to guess that people are still buying lots of PC software in brick and mortars?

We're a small fishbowl gents, us savvy netcrawlers and core gamers. Since the box release can be afforded, this could be a big success for Johnathan Blow.

while i understand that there's a big market out there for consumers who don't understand/trust or generally just don't use digital distribution, i can't imagine Braid being the type of game that will garner much attention sitting on the shelf of a big box store.

Maybe the PC retail version will be an actual port of the game with advanced features such as a proper option menu. Having to do nearly everything through the command line sucks.

braid is awesome. retail also is a different potentially much bigger market than electronic. nothing like having your product in all the wal-marts. obviously not geared for the "super-users" posting here.

I hope Tubatic is right. He probably is, but if he's not, you just know people are going to say "Boxed Braid did not sell, therefore digital distribution > physical copies."

i have to say its one of those DLC's that the hype suprisingly lived up to its gameplay, and the story, although wiered at first, gets pretty nuts at the end, esp the last level, that shits nuts!

10 bucks DLC, yes get it, 20 bucks retail with no extras, pass on it....

It could sell decently (not The Sims decently, but decently decently) boxed, because when one is buying a boxed game the important factors are most likely the cover on the box and the letter that says it's not rated M.

Yes, I'm saying boxed PC games now appeal only to idiots. Everyone else with half a brain who isn't living in a bunker underground afraid of the "internet" thing has heard of Braid, and if they are half a person played it too.

Maybe this is a very elaborate and clever ploy to convey the benefits of digital distribution.
Just imagine someone buying a retail copy of Braid for 20 dollars, and open the box only to find a slip of paper saying "Well done, savvy consumer. You just blew 5 dollars on cardboard."
