Braid available on PC photo
#PC

Yesterday, Braid was released on PC. We would have loved to see what Jonathan Blow -- the creator of the game -- had to say about the release on his blog, but we can’t. It’s currently down, which might serve as a good indication as to the popularity of the game’s Windows release.

You can buy and download the game from a variety of places. As pointed out by community member IroN1c, it’s available through Steam, Greenhouse, Impluse and Gamersgate. If you’ve avoided the artsy videogame scene for the last year and a half and don’t know what the hubbub is about, check out our review or grab a demo from one of the above providers.

I listed the system requirements after the break. As you could imagine, they’re not on the level of Crysis, but I’m running a pretty busted up Windows joint at my house and I like to know these things.

So, what’s up? You PC guys getting Braid? What was the musical surprise?

System Requirements

Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP / Vista / 7
Processor: 1.4GHz or faster
Memory: 768 MB or more
Hard Disk Space: 200 MB or more
Video Card: tbd
DirectX® Version: DirectX® 9.0c
Controller Support: Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows

I'm happy with my XBLA version personally. But this is nice, as now people like Samit can finally play this fantastic game.

A modern game that ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY loves that I can run?! Maybe I'll give it a shot!

I have the XBLA version, but I'll likely pick it up on steam just because it's that good, and I want a PC version.

Wow, those are pretty great requirements! A game I can run fullspeed...*drools*

Shame that Steam doesn't have the demo (yet?), but I'm getting it from somewhere else right now. Should be an experience.

Wow, I haven't seen such low requirements for a modern game in a long time. I'm happy with my Xbox version, though.

I've posted this elsewhere - it has already affected a number of people. Braid (PC) has some serious crash and speed issues on various video / CPU configurations (particularly laptop). If the game seems to be running at half-speed, or crashes when you try to start it, change to windowed mode. The game itself does not contain an option to run in this mode, so right-click on the icon, select "Properties", and select "run in a window". In Steam, right-click on the game name, select "Properties", then click on "Set Launch Options", and type "-windowed" in the text box and click "OK". This will fix the problem until the game is (hopefully) patched.

@linuxguy:
No, a handheld version would be terrible because all the art would be completely lost on those little screens.

I have a PS3 so I'm totally getting this. Now I just need to get Fable 2 when it comes to PC.

Why are people surprised by the low system requirements? It's a 2d game. It doesn't even need a 3d card.

AVOID IMPULSE

Dodgy as hell and terrible customer support. I tried to use them to gift Braid to a friend, their system fucked up and it gifted it to myself. Haven't heard anything from their useless customer support and they turned off their phones.

Whoops, Nintendoll's comment was me. She left herself logged in on my PC. Still, Avoid impulse.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Linux version. Yes there was "talk" about it, and Jonathan Blow got into a HUUUUUUUGE bitch fight with people about how impossible it was to port to Linux and he wasn't going to bother.

Also according to him the game requires a Nvidia 7800 or higher, which is retarded of course, but probably the lowest he could be arsed to make the game run on to his godlike standards.

I just posted this on the WineHQ forums, so hopefully non-Windows users can totally shit their pants as well.

Just a note: I played it. It runs terrible and my computer is far above the specs. It requires a 1080p video card and runs in a very high resolution that can NOT be changed. You can control the framerate via command line switches such as -30fps and whatnot, but it's not worth it. I was only able to get it to run at a stable 15 fps (With -novsync and -no_post (processing) on as well!). There is no reason they couldn't add a resolution option, or even a control customization option. You are stuck with it's defaults (Which are space/z to jump, shift to time warp, wasd/arrows to move) with no gamepad mapping (It may have defaults though).

For those who will instantly ask for specs;
AMD Athlon 64 2.2GHz (OC'd to 2.4)
3GB RAM
Radeon X1550 (It's a budget card, but runs Source full frames so this is no excuse)

Searching their forums, people with Core 2 Duos and HD ATi cards as well as others can not run past 30fps (Despite 60fps being advertised in the readme).

runs at 15-20fps on my crappy intel GMA so this means I won't be playing it anytime soon

I bought this off steam last night and couldn't stop playing till I finished it. It's kind of short but so worth it. If you want to use a gamepad you'll have to use something like joy2key, which lets you map keyboard buttons to a gamepad.

Sonicandtails - see my post above, though I don't know if it will help you. I think the framerate issues often occur when the game runs full screen, which unfortunately is the default mode. The game ran at about 20 fps (perhaps a little lower) until I ran it windowed, at which point it went up to 40-60 fps, and played perfectly fine. I'm on an nVidia 7600, so Blow's comments about needing 7800 or above aren't really valid unless you have a really weak single-core CPU.

For the time being, the demo is not available on Steam.

I'm not sure whether I want to get it on PC or wait and see if a PS3 version will be made. I get the feeling that by playing such a detailed game on a 17" screen I'll be missing out some what.

I found this game to be boring when I played the Live demo. I will continue to ignore it on PC.

Even if it runs at 10 frames or so it's okay. I also need a new computer.

Sustenance: I tried all the known flags, and Windowed mode did not improve my FPS very much at all. Although, considering it doesn't fit on a 1024x768 resolution, I can't take that route anyways.
