Brace yourselves, retro gamers: Mega Man 9 is an 8-bit game photo

In the most unexpected and totally awesome-filled news of the day, GamesRadar has put up its hands-on with the WiiWare-bound Mega Man 9, and guess what -- it's going to be an 8-bit game!

Highlights from the article include: Splash Woman (the first ever female boss character), Dr. Light's shop making an appearance, and the fact that some of Mega Man 9's music is taken straight out of Mega Man 2.

If you haven't fainted from all of the excitement, make sure to check out GamesRadar's interview with Keiji Inafune, where he doesn't deny that an XBLA and PSN version of Mega Man 9 are being made.

I'd heard rumors that Mega Man 9 would be going back to its roots to make up for all of the less-than-stellar Mega Man games that have been released over the years, but I had no idea that it would end up looking like an NES game.

Are you guys as excited as I am?

If its supposed to be a sequel to 8 then why not carry over the graphics from 8. I love Megaman always have, but I'm just not really that exicted since I can go back and play both of the Ann. Collections I have.

@Tubatic: We can take off the helmet? FUCK YES. I loved running around helmet-less in Legends, Rock looks so much better without that goofy thing.

Ah, that explains it. I had no Internet access last week until Friday.

What a disappointment it is to read all your idiotic comments. This shit rules, straight up. Fuck you all.

Um, we've known this since the pictures leaked a week ago. (Someone probably already mentioned that, though.) I prefer 16-bit, personally. But then, I'm not even a Mega Man fan, so whatevssssss.

@Grim

Still good news though, since this is the first completely legit, not-leaked info we've had on Mega Man 9

Also, the article mentions a "portal" level and a few instances of momentum being used. Not sure if its fakey momentum or more advanced calculation, but it sounds like some nice modern concepts making their way into this series.

Also Also, They're messing all sort of ways with the skill set. You don't start with a chargeable Buster Cannon, and there was no slide move during GameRadar's play test. Inafune's heard so many people talking about how they loved Mega Man 2, and he's stripped the core gameplay back to that game :)

CAN YOU TELL I'M EXCITED!!!!???!?!!?!!!?!!???!!!?

This is just awesome. I am so glad to see something like this happen. Thank you, Capcom. Now just don't suck.

Considering the amount of unprecedented milking the 'Mega Man' series has seen over the years, I am surprised Capcom even greenlit this project. Not unlike 'Castlevania', the series likely has a small development budget.

True 8-bit? Or just looks like 8-bit.

Anyway, this is great news. I always wanted to know what it would look like if a huge development studio made an NES game nowadays.

I think the whole 8-bit angle is a brilliant way to beat the WiiWare limitations. I mean they don't give you a whole lot of space... unless you're programming NES games!

Also, I always thought it would be cool if developers would make new NES games, as most gamers agree the NES was the best system evar! So I'm very excited about this title and hope more devs follow suit and make more 8-bit goodies.

I was hoping for 16-bit... everyone knows that 16-bit graphics are where it's at when it comes to sprite art.

I agree with those of you who prefer 16-bit. I love Mega Man X just a tad bit more than I do MM2.
