Brace yourselves, retro gamers: Mega Man 9 is an 8-bit game photo

In the most unexpected and totally awesome-filled news of the day, GamesRadar has put up its hands-on with the WiiWare-bound Mega Man 9, and guess what -- it's going to be an 8-bit game!

Highlights from the article include: Splash Woman (the first ever female boss character), Dr. Light's shop making an appearance, and the fact that some of Mega Man 9's music is taken straight out of Mega Man 2.

If you haven't fainted from all of the excitement, make sure to check out GamesRadar's interview with Keiji Inafune, where he doesn't deny that an XBLA and PSN version of Mega Man 9 are being made.

I'd heard rumors that Mega Man 9 would be going back to its roots to make up for all of the less-than-stellar Mega Man games that have been released over the years, but I had no idea that it would end up looking like an NES game.

Are you guys as excited as I am?

I think the best part is that you need Plugman's ability to beat Splash woman. All the retared bosses aside, I am so excited to play this game because I am a huge Megaman fan.

I will not play it on the Wii, because I don't have one anymore and I refuse to buy another one just for this game.

However, if it comes to XBLA, then HELL FREAKIN YES!

I was pretty sure Capcom confirmed that it coming to 360 and PS3 was just a rumor, and that they had no plans for anything except Wii.

I'm somewhat excited, but I really feel going 8bit is just taking a step backward into fan service. I would of liked to see an all new 2D megaman with detailed sprites instead of something a ROM hacker could make.

There's really no reason to make this game 8-bit. It's just lazy/cheap. They could just as well make the game with the exact same gameplay but with art assets that are of a higher standard. This just feeds some weird retro fetish. I'll pass.

"to introduce buyable items. It was integrated into Mega Man 7 and 8, and it's also part of Mega Man 9, making it the first NES-style game to contain Dr. Light's shop. Items include an energy balancer (distributes energy to weapons that need it most), spike shoes (protect against one-hit kills) and new armor that reduces damage by half. You're also able to remove his helmet and play the game with Mega's black hair flowing free."

Re-damn-diculous. I am happy.

"It's just lazy/cheap."

Its traditional. The Mega Man sprite didn't change for 6 games.
Also, while it doesn't take a huge team of hyper-trained artists to make an 8-bit game, there's certainly work put into it. The assets I see in the screen shots, save for our man Mega, are new sprites.

**The assets I see in the screen shots, save for our man Mega, are new sprites.**

I would urge people that feel this is a lazy and negatively cheap move to read the preview article.

The more I read about how they're reusing old stuff (music, sprites, etc.), the more this feels like a cash in.

That dragon right there? Dragon boss's head repainted (thousand hours in MSPaint) and slapped on a cluster of fireball enemies. All from previous games. Stuck a feather in it's hat and called it "retroroni".

Plus, if they were lazy enough to okay (Butt)Plug Man, I can't imagine they're trying awfully hard. Mega Man 7 and 8 were cool because they actually put the time and effort into everything.

Go back and play Mega Man 6, and tell me if that's a good game, because this is going to be the thing; stupid bosses, meh level design, etc. Not that I mind; I'll still play it because I'm a giant consumer whore. I'm just not giving them money for it.
