In the most unexpected and totally awesome-filled news of the day, GamesRadar has put up its hands-on with the WiiWare-bound Mega Man 9, and guess what -- it's going to be an 8-bit game!
Highlights from the article include: Splash Woman (the first ever female boss character), Dr. Light's shop making an appearance, and the fact that some of Mega Man 9's music is taken straight out of Mega Man 2.
If you haven't fainted from all of the excitement, make sure to check out GamesRadar's interview with Keiji Inafune, where he doesn't deny that an XBLA and PSN version of Mega Man 9 are being made.
I'd heard rumors that Mega Man 9 would be going back to its roots to make up for all of the less-than-stellar Mega Man games that have been released over the years, but I had no idea that it would end up looking like an NES game.
Are you guys as excited as I am?
Am I as excited as you? I was juggling knives when I read this and it's a mess in here.
So...Much.....JIZZ!!!!!!!
I think the best part is that you need Plugman's ability to beat Splash woman. All the retared bosses aside, I am so excited to play this game because I am a huge Megaman fan.
*spooge*
Now I need a Wii.
In before obligatory semen reference...oh shit, I was too late already.
I will not play it on the Wii, because I don't have one anymore and I refuse to buy another one just for this game.
However, if it comes to XBLA, then HELL FREAKIN YES!
I was pretty sure Capcom confirmed that it coming to 360 and PS3 was just a rumor, and that they had no plans for anything except Wii.
100,000!! 100,000!!
Cool.
Why 8-bit why! :p
Wow, I am soooooo stoked for this game now :D I can't wait!!!!
other than the game itself, is anybody excited for the music? because i am!
Hope this paves the way for more 8bit wiiware.
Why Capcom, why did you have to make Megaman 9 a Wii exclusive?
All I'm wondering is how many Wii points it'll go for so I know if I need to refill. Looking forward to this!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!
Give me the new megamans nao.
Bravo Capcom! I would enver imagine anyone doing something this bold. God bless them.
Agrees with necrozen.
This is gonna be like candy.
Initiating erectile elongation sequence.
2D AND 8-bit?! Thats two scoops of win right there. Wow!
I'm somewhat excited, but I really feel going 8bit is just taking a step backward into fan service. I would of liked to see an all new 2D megaman with detailed sprites instead of something a ROM hacker could make.
I would even preload it!! I <3 Megaman
@Respectable Gentleman
Stop juggling me!!!
Really... this makes front page NOW? Its been all over the other websites since last week!
They should do a limited run of cartridges for this!
How cool would that be.
@covah,
exactly what i was thinking, but apparently everyone else is happy so whatever
So lame, why not make it at least 32bit and 2D?
"Splash Woman, the first ever female boss character.."
Tron Bonne does NOT approve.
Good to hear, GREAT to hear.
Dopey, what's wrong with crisp, clean, updated graphics or a mix of both? I'm unexcited at best. If I wanted to retro-wank it I would pick up an old playboy.
Goddamnit, I want pretty hand-drawn animations.
There's really no reason to make this game 8-bit. It's just lazy/cheap. They could just as well make the game with the exact same gameplay but with art assets that are of a higher standard. This just feeds some weird retro fetish. I'll pass.
And I where looking forward to HD sprites and stuff...
"to introduce buyable items. It was integrated into Mega Man 7 and 8, and it's also part of Mega Man 9, making it the first NES-style game to contain Dr. Light's shop. Items include an energy balancer (distributes energy to weapons that need it most), spike shoes (protect against one-hit kills) and new armor that reduces damage by half. You're also able to remove his helmet and play the game with Mega's black hair flowing free."
Re-damn-diculous. I am happy.
B-B-B-BONER!
"It's just lazy/cheap."
Its traditional. The Mega Man sprite didn't change for 6 games.
Also, while it doesn't take a huge team of hyper-trained artists to make an 8-bit game, there's certainly work put into it. The assets I see in the screen shots, save for our man Mega, are new sprites.
**The assets I see in the screen shots, save for our man Mega, are new sprites.**
I would urge people that feel this is a lazy and negatively cheap move to read the preview article.
I mean, the music is almost the same as MM2!!
I'm all for retro, but what's the point?
I went back to play Megaman Anniversary Collection.. I smiled.
PAX = I hope Capcom has this @ the show!
The more I read about how they're reusing old stuff (music, sprites, etc.), the more this feels like a cash in.
That dragon right there? Dragon boss's head repainted (thousand hours in MSPaint) and slapped on a cluster of fireball enemies. All from previous games. Stuck a feather in it's hat and called it "retroroni".
Plus, if they were lazy enough to okay (Butt)Plug Man, I can't imagine they're trying awfully hard. Mega Man 7 and 8 were cool because they actually put the time and effort into everything.
Go back and play Mega Man 6, and tell me if that's a good game, because this is going to be the thing; stupid bosses, meh level design, etc. Not that I mind; I'll still play it because I'm a giant consumer whore. I'm just not giving them money for it.
madninja - "...the best part is that you need Plugman's ability to beat Splash woman."
Please Lord let that purposefully be the most awesome sexual reference everrrr!
If so, this is shaping up to be the sexiest *MOPBOG yet!!!
(Megaman-Based Oldschool Platformer w/ Buttplug-Play and Outrageous Glitches)
I hate being this guy but the internet as a whole compels me...... Old news is old. Mega Man being 8-bit was revealed the same time the game itself was revealed about a week ago.
**Tosses his keyboard and starts humping his monitor**
Mega Man 2.5 X Ultra Mega Hyper Combo Deluxe 8-bit would've been a better name.
But I still wanna play it.
I'm not buying something on retrofactor alone. I hope this game does well commercially, but I want something in the vein of 7 and 8, not another MM2.
Inafune overestimated the maturity of the games industry when he created Plug Man. He should have known 90% of the hardcore kiddies would laugh and make sexual innuendo jokes.
* Great interview. Would be bizarre if they release the game in nes cartridge, but the programming don“t that be nes compatible.
Did I get into a time warp or something? This was revealed last week.
This doesn't excite me whatsoever. It's 2008. Not 1992. Sorry, Capcom, but none of my money for you.
It was revealed last week, just no really clear pics of it at that time.

So wait, is this going to belike Mega Man 6, except with new bosses? That's what it's sounding like, and that sucks.
Better not be a Wii exclusive. The world needs a PSP port.
If its supposed to be a sequel to 8 then why not carry over the graphics from 8. I love Megaman always have, but I'm just not really that exicted since I can go back and play both of the Ann. Collections I have.
@Tubatic: We can take off the helmet? FUCK YES. I loved running around helmet-less in Legends, Rock looks so much better without that goofy thing.
Ah, that explains it. I had no Internet access last week until Friday.
What a disappointment it is to read all your idiotic comments. This shit rules, straight up. Fuck you all.
Um, we've known this since the pictures leaked a week ago. (Someone probably already mentioned that, though.) I prefer 16-bit, personally. But then, I'm not even a Mega Man fan, so whatevssssss.
@Grim
Still good news though, since this is the first completely legit, not-leaked info we've had on Mega Man 9
Also, the article mentions a "portal" level and a few instances of momentum being used. Not sure if its fakey momentum or more advanced calculation, but it sounds like some nice modern concepts making their way into this series.
Also Also, They're messing all sort of ways with the skill set. You don't start with a chargeable Buster Cannon, and there was no slide move during GameRadar's play test. Inafune's heard so many people talking about how they loved Mega Man 2, and he's stripped the core gameplay back to that game :)
CAN YOU TELL I'M EXCITED!!!!???!?!!?!!!?!!???!!!?
This is just awesome. I am so glad to see something like this happen. Thank you, Capcom. Now just don't suck.
Considering the amount of unprecedented milking the 'Mega Man' series has seen over the years, I am surprised Capcom even greenlit this project. Not unlike 'Castlevania', the series likely has a small development budget.
But can you shoot up?
splash WOMAN?!? blasphemy
i hope this unspoken portion involves Protoman... playable mini-adventure?
i would die
True 8-bit? Or just looks like 8-bit.
Anyway, this is great news. I always wanted to know what it would look like if a huge development studio made an NES game nowadays.
Wow, this is really awesome.
I think the whole 8-bit angle is a brilliant way to beat the WiiWare limitations. I mean they don't give you a whole lot of space... unless you're programming NES games!
Also, I always thought it would be cool if developers would make new NES games, as most gamers agree the NES was the best system evar! So I'm very excited about this title and hope more devs follow suit and make more 8-bit goodies.
Dr Wiley, you're not fooling anyone with that woman of yours.
Splashwoman is such a beard.
Awesome! Another Mega Man game I won't be able to beat.
I was hoping for 16-bit... everyone knows that 16-bit graphics are where it's at when it comes to sprite art.
*is smiling hugely*
That link seems to direct me to a non-existant page
I agree with those of you who prefer 16-bit. I love Mega Man X just a tad bit more than I do MM2.
*crossing my fingers for crash man music*
Old'd/10.
I heard it was 8-bit almost a week ago. Still cool, though.
