Boston Globe names Harmonix one of the top places to work photo

This Sunday the Boston Globe will name Harmonix, developer of Rock Band, one of the top places to work in Massachusetts.

The rankings were based on a survey collected by an independent company of around 70,000 employees in the state. Harmonix managed to grab the #11 spot on the overall list, #5 on the list of “best small workplaces,” and came in at #3 of the “most inclusive” company. If all the rankings were averaged together, Harmonix would earn a solid #2 in the overall “best small inclusive workplace” list.

My math may have been bad on that last ranking, but I lost nearly all of my intelligence upon purchasing a second set of plastic drums this year. The mere fact that I was willing to do so (regardless of my brain leakage) is certainly a testament to the quality that Harmonix puts out there. I say the Boston Globe should just suck it up and give them first place. Who cares about hospitals, right?

Harmonix is one of my top favorite developers, alongside Insomniac, which also gets these distinctions frequently. I'm not surprised.

REALLY! Too bad I've been trying to get a job there since August and have failed miserably. I applied for both an internship and a tester job. They turned me down for an internship, and I am still waiting back on the tester job. I meet ALL the required qualifications, and 1.5 out of 2 of the desired qualifications. I am also friends with a guy who is in a band that's in RB2 with the senior sound designer there, talked to the guy and "got in good." Hopefully I can have personal experience to agree with this article soon!!

eh...From what I saw it was your standard software development shop. Obviously, the main difference is that they have sound studios and the company develops video games. However, all the sketchy artist types were holed up in the front offices while the clean cut developers were dumped in the back.

Also, there was no "playtesting" by the QA engineers. They had this really cool software app that they loaded the songs into to test with for the most part. I was curious to sneak a peek at a test plan, but I wasn't fortunate enough to find someone willing to share.

What's interesting is that they exist on a single floor that they purchased in a building from Harvard. There also is next to no decent parking in the area.

I always wonder what someplace like that pays. Especially since traditional software houses pay better than game development houses.

@XL1ska

The games industry is a tough nut to crack - short of one failed MMO start-up, I haven't gotten any company to even acknowledge my resume or answer a call with an actual HR person.

I'm in school right now for game audio and Harmonix is my number one Goal. I'm determined to be part of the Harmonix team in the next 2 years.
