Borderlands will release on Steam, have extra features photo

About an hour ago we received a tip that a couple Gearbox employees had tweeted about Borderlands coming to Steam. While many people assumed it would be inevitable, I hit up Gearbox to see if I could get official confirmation, and official confirmation I got.

Not only will Borderlands be releasing for download on Steam, Steve Gibson of Gearbox also told us about a couple additional features that will be exclusive to the PC version. Given the amount of unique weapons in the game, you'll probably end up with some sweet-looking gun that none of your friends have. Want to show it off? You'll be able to export item cards to .jpg files. Additionally, the PC version will come with timedemo benchmark software, which admittedly isn't needed for the console versions, but will be a nice touch.

Steve also went on to say that those with high end PCs will experience the best Borderlands graphics of all the platforms. Finally, and what actually makes me the happiest, is that Steve promises that the PC version will have menu and inventory systems that are specifically designed for use with a mouse, the lack of which has been one of my bigger complaints about recent multi-platform games. Steve states that Gearbox is treating the PC version very seriously, and from what he's told me, it sounds like Gearbox on the right track.

Final details for the Steam release are still being worked on, but the Steam pre-order date will be announced as soon as it's available. For those of you with a 360 or a PS3 and a decent gaming PC, which platform will you be getting the game for?

[Thanks Opus & BorderlandsGuide!]

Well that seals it, it comes out on my birthday and it has extra features via steam. I have a 360 a PS3 and a GREAT PC so this will be my second PC game I purchase.

I was actually talkin. To a friends uncle who said he wanted to get Borderlands on PC over consoles but felt more comfortable with a joystick and said "The only reason I would get it on PC is if it had extra goods." I should ask him now. Wonder if this would win him over.

I love steam so much. A moment of silence while we thank Valve.

I was planning on buying Borderlands anyway, but Steam support is always a plus. Now if only I could find out the system reqs for the game. It comes out in a month and I haven't even heard a peep.

@Xzyliac: Does he know USB xbox controllers work on PCs? Wireless ones have a little adapter thingie you can buy. That's helped out a ton

Anyway. AUGUGUGH this game looks so incredible!

I'm pretty sure my rig wouldn't run this at max, and I'm very sad. I would seriously get into heavier PC gaming if my rig was of the supreme kind, and wasn't so expensive.

Good to see they are showing the PC some love.

Dang, wish that .jpg thing was also on consoles... (wouldn't be too hard on PS3 at least)
Oh well, guess I'll show my friends my awesome new gun when I blow them away with it XD

seeing as I lack a good PC (only have a laptop) I will have to get it for 360 or PS3, which one of those is still undecided tho.

Baaah I'm torn. From all accounts the PC version will be the definitive version, but I doubt my computer would run it noticeably better than the console release and I still feel left out when I see everyone on my Xbox friend list playing Left 4 Dead (I bought the Steam version). I'm going to have to think about this one.

Still can't decide without system specs. I'll continue to lean on the PS3 version until I get proof that I'll see a graphical improvement running it on my PC.

Getting PC version, Steam + Better graphics + better online + Mouse/keys + mods? = sold twice (once for me + gf). Heres hoping for a sweet steam preorder bonus.

Nice that PC gamers are getting some love, that RARELY happens these days (well, except getting free DLC...). I don't have a gaming PC so I'll be buying this for 360.

I'll get it for PC if it runs well (which means I might have to pirate it to test it ): ), otherwise I guess I'll go for console.

I really never know if a game will run well or not with my PC. Quad cores are so iffy...

Well hopefully they release a demo!

It runs great on high end PCs? You don't say. That's terrific. Now if it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you maybe, possibly RELEASE THE FUCKING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS! It's less than a month from launch! I'm not anticipating any trouble, but when the System Requirements are withheld for so long, it tends to be a little worrisome, like the developer has something to hide. It doesn't seem like they do, but "runs great on high end PCs" could be code for "you'd better have an incredible rig, else you're fucked". Again, I don't think this will be the case, but even if it isn't, how much fucking trouble is it to release the system requirements. If those are actually still up in the air, that's a problem.

I've had it pre-ordered on PC for about a month now. Only reason is most stores barely get any copies of PC games, and I prefer a physical copy. Also, it's been stated it would be best for PC (at least graphically) for a while, so I've always planned to pick it up =D

I got a gaming PC but I just prefer my games on my games ps3. There's just something about playing games on my ps3 that just feels right. I doubt the graphics will make much of differance due to it being a heavily stylized game.

I have a pretty low-end laptop so I'm going to be getting this for PS3, but it kinda sucks that I'm going to miss out on the extra features just because I don't have a PC capable of running it.

Gearbox are old school PC guys, so I'm glad to see they haven't ditched out on it like so many others have for consoles. Though I dunno if I'll be able to afford this. But oh well =X.

I'll probably get the PC and the 360 version.

Genebeef: Only if your PC is free, buddy. I'm paying for the convenience of not having to spend $600 every other year just to keep current. The convenience of sitting on the couch is just a bonus.

Not to mention that last time I tried to use a Windows machine for gaming the thing got so unstable I had to do a clean install before I could even finish a game. No point in doing serious gaming on a computer anymore.

I really don't see why they can't export an image file on the consoles. I don't know how much trouble it'd be on 360, where I haven't seen such a feature, but a number of PS3 games already support that sort of thing.

I always love how whenever there is any article about any thing related to pc gaming it becomes essentially a flame war about how expensive pc gaming is or how consoles suck or whatever. Ugh...

Anyways, I'll be getting it on pc. Because PCs are SO much better than consoles.

So glad to hear they're making sure it works properly on the PC, it's always tragic to buy a PC game and realize that it wasn't quite optimized for it. I love Steam because I never have to worry about losing my CD key.

On an extra note, I hope the console versions aren't like the PC version in the way of bugs. Fallout 3 was great but so frustrating playing a game with that many bugs in it on a console. That's a big reason that I go with console games is because I don't like when the inevitable pc related bugs and glitches pull me out of the game. It's not that bad, but it's enough to reassure me that I'm happier with my console versions.

I love that every PC gaming related post has to have a person telling us how much they just love sitting on the big comfty couch instead of sitting at their desk. As if it's at all relevant to anything or that anyone gives a shit.
