What punches through the imaginary uterus when an RPG and an FPS decide to knock boots and make a miracle? Borderlands, man. But the game is no suckling according to the stuff we’ve seen thus far. It’s a competent shooter with twisted style and one or two things that could keep RPG people on their knees and begging for more.

Pushing the bent vibe, the marketing campaign has started on the television. The first spot is available above in all its commercial glory. Consisting of a few slices of action, and plenty of chuckle-inducing moments, we're finding it hard to believe anyone could watch this thing and not, at least, consider purchasing.

The console versions of Borderlands launch on October 20th, while the PC version is to be made available on October 26th.

okay, i'm as excited as the next person for borderlands. probably more so.

but why does everyone keep hyping the rpg/fps combo as if borderlands is the first one to come up with it?

mass effect, bioshock, fallout 3. gearbox isnt the first one to have this idea.

I want to get this because of the Multiplayer aspect of it. I had lots of fun running around killing and collecting loot in Diablo II and Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast) plus has that Fallout 3 / Mad Max look to it. Must first beat Uncharted 2 though! Question lingers whether there will be more online bums on PC or PS3? Steam looks to have the sweeter deal right now though.

@mOnion: never played mass effect, but gameplay wise it's closer to an RPG than bioshock and it's more of a shooter than Fallout 3 (which is not a shooter). so I think there is some merit to them mentioning it, because I feel it's in a truer sense a hybrid than either of those games. i also never heard them claiming to be the first to do it either.

that said, my interest in the game is falling away. gameplay video really hasn't been all that impressive. not bad, but it's not the easy sell that it was before the video leaked ground my expectations.

Why doesn't this look anything like an RPG? I mean, there's more to it than some vague notion of leveling up and creating weapons, isn't there?

Mass Effect isn't really very RPGish at all. I'm a huge fan but I would never claim it as a fair mashup of RPG and shooter.

This, Fallout 3 and the forthcoming Rage really have you covered if shooting stuff in post-apocalyptic wastelands is your thing. Has every other scenario been done so many times before?

I'd say so. There are four character classes with unique skill trees, plus a lot of Diablo-style looting. Not too deep, but a pretty standard action/RPG fare.

@mOnion - I think the major difference is that the games you mentioned are RPG designed games that have FPS style combat added to them. This game is a true FPS design that has RPG elements added to it. It's probibly closer to Bioshock in terms of gameplay, but adds in MP co-op in the vein of Left 4 Dead.

It looks to be a very intersting mix.

Your opinion would have been fine if you hadn't backed it up with such blatant retardism.

Gearbox has helmed quite a few stellar projects, not the least of which was the Opposing Force expansion for the original Half-Life (one of the best spin-offs ever), and I've thoroughly enjoyed the Brothers in Arms series so far.

Whether or not Borderlands will turn out well, I don't know. But saying that these developers can't make a good game is utter rubbish.

Oh-so-clever distortion of the title aside, I'm still going to buy Borderlands. Day of release, in fact. One of my most anticipated titles of the year, largely because it's a new IP.

I am, however, worried that so many people are expecting so much (Fallout 3 butthurt aside) out of this game that it will end up being over-hyped, something even a fantastic game can fall prey to.

mrandydixon : I never played the pc games. Allow me to rectify: Gearbox hasn't made an aaa title for consoles yet. The Half Life port for ps2 sucked. I heard it's pc halo release wasn't great either (how do you mess up porting Halo fer god's sake?) and even if it's Half life expansion is half decent, they are still basing it on the engine and basics from valve. Most of the hard work is already done. They have never delivered a stellar game not based on someone else's game engine or franchise (and let's face it, Half life was acclaimed anyway so it's not like GB had to do much work there).

nschrode: I'm sorry your taste sucks :( I will hold a moment of silence for it's passing. also, fallout 3 will rape this game. It sounds like a dumbed down fallout, and I think that's the audience it will attract too to be honest. Those not sophisticated enough for an amazing, story driven game. The majority of it's audience anyway.

People who try to objectify a medium of entertainment, claiming one object of entertainment can be "better" than another object of entertainment in ways other than how they entertain, are some of my favorite people. So I tell ya what, we'll make it a joint funeral: you can mourn the perceived passing of my taste, and I'll mourn the loss of a young, innocent sense of logic.

Oh, and the comparison between Fallout 3 and Borderlands isn't very applicable - you actually get to shoot things in Borderlands. And I liked Fallout 3. Didn't love it, but I did like it.

Finally, dig deep into your sophistication mine to find some decent grammar.

mOnion: Not sure why everyone keeps saying Bioshock is in any way a role-playing game. I've played a bit of it (though clearly not enough to see what the fuss is about because I wasn't impressed) and as far as I can tell it's just a shooter with an upgrade system. There's a name for that sort of game, it's "shooter" or when in the first person perspective "first-person shooter" (FPS).

Fallout 3 (probably my favorite game of 2008) is fantastic, but it's not much of a shooter and for the most part can't actually be played as one until pretty late in the game when you're barely taking damage from anything. Even then it's still not a great shooter, but you can at least run around and shoot stuff without resorting to VATS at all.

I haven't played Mass Effect, but by all accounts it's not much of a shooter either despite having a lot of shooting in it.

From the little bit I got to play of Borderlands at PAX it's definitely a hell of a shooter and very much a role-playing game in the same way that Die-ablo is a role-playing game. How much you want to consider that an RPG is up to you, but I don't see any reason not to count it.

Dexter345: Word.

AdamantiumHip: The "feel" of Borderlands is a heck of a lot like Call of Duty, at least on the 360 build they were showing at PAX. It certainly plays better than Half-Life (an outstandingly over-rated game in general) ever has on a console.

ndschroede23: Proof read when breaking down fool clowns on their fool clown grammar, your superiority of language is the superior vehicle (that can only be described as superior) by which you must travel the superior high ground of superiority. I think I generally agree with your point, but one "object of entertainment" can be "better" than another. Allow me to present exhibit A: Daikatana and exhibit B: Super Mario World. One of these is objectively terrible and the other is objectively the greatest game of all time.

Oh here is AdamantiumHip again with his little retarded crusade against Borderlands. What's in it for you to bash on this game so much? I see the same comment by you every time Borderlands is mentioned.

"They never made a AAA game"

Your point is? We all have to start somewhere right? I you think the game will be boring don't buy it. Don't say it is boring. There is a difference between your opinion and facts. The difference is pretty big in this case. Don't ever call someone a retard for following his own taste. Backing up your arguments with a sentence like that really only works against you.

Apologies for not considering your condition. But you're still a douchebag. Opinions =/= facts, never.

@hpv
Perhaps I should have made my opinion clearer: AdamantiumHip is suggesting that, despite popular opinion, Borderlands is going to suck (granted, neither opinion can be given much validity considering the game isn't out yet). He seems to imply that there's some way to determine whether a game is good or not besides how many people get entertainment from it. I would agree that Super Mario World is a great game, but only because more people enjoy it than Daikatana (which, I admit, I have never played or even heard of). Entertainment is judged based solely on how it entertains, just like a car is judged on how well it drives, and a vacuum cleaner is judged on how well it cleans. A game isn't subject to the mysterious voodoo criteria that AdamantiumHip wishes were there.
