Borderlands trade system may change if people want it to photo

Gearbox Studios isn’t opposed to changing the way people exchange loot in the fascinating RPS, Borderlands. The catch is that the crew behind the game will move in whatever direction the community wants to in the future -- not now.

“We were pretty careful there,” Gearbox’s Mikey Neumann told Shacknews in a recent interview when asked if trade in the game would be expanded. “We wanted free-for-all looting for now. Then we'll look at what the community really latches on to or wants, and we'll move in that direction.”

Neumann hasn’t encountered a problem with loot-whoring like some complaining about the free-for-all, simply-drop system have been. If there’s a dispute, Neumann says he settles it via duels with a hearty helping of the honor system afterward.

“A lot of times if we wanted something, we'd [friends, co-workers, and randoms] duel for it, That seems to be the best way,” he said. “It's kinda the honor system. It is fun to fight your friends and show who's the big dog to get certain loot drops”

If the community does prove to want a new system, Neumann said that new rules (or whatever) would be patched across all platforms. He then admitted that there are some technical hurdles involved, but Gearbox would do it’s best to “try to make it all better.”

I haven't had that problem yet but I've only played split screen with one of my good friends. We're playing different classes so loot hogging isn't much of a deal.

It's good to see that Gearbox is listening to fans though.

Dueling for loot can be an unfair way to decide who gets the loot if there is a big enough level gap between the players. Although I haven't really ran into any problems yet, I don't think relying on a honor system among strangers can work out that well, especially considering the personality of the average online player.

Dueling would be alright if the game was balanced. Right now I have the talent that lets me bypass shields, with a grenade launcher that fires all 8 shots at once. Not many can survive that. It's not skill based so..the loot they just picked up could be used to defeat the other person. I've seen people beaten by Bloodhawk in one hit, ect ect,.

Dueling? That fucktarded to decide who gets what. Free for All looting is 10 years old, if not older. They should put in a new system that allows all greens and up based on host settings to be needed or greeded. Or plain rolled for (dice). There so many ways.

This kind of thing should have been in there originally, hopefully they can build a proper trading system soon.

Just have an option for a WoW need/greed roll system. You don't have to use it. Problem solved.

This is exactly what I like to see from a developer. An interest in the community, that leads to a better game because of it.

However, I did love the free loot system though. It was nice to be able to manage items in that way, instead of the ten-times restricted item and loot systems most games today have.

How bout getting the god-damn game to work first. On PC, no one can get a co-op game going and there are graphic driver problems abound for both ATI and Nvidia cards. Damnit Gearbox, don't fucking release the game until it's done!

Bloodhawk can OHKO you? So that's why I been getting pwned by Hunters in duels.

Since I haven't played those kind of games, what exactly is the need/greed system?

He should try random pub games. It's obviously not going to be an issue between friends and other people you can punch in the face. I certainly hope that they aren't rigging this in their minds though, i.e. if it sells well (and seemingly is) they'll presume that everyone is okay with FFA.

I never particularly cared for the Brothers in Arms series, but the Half-life games they made were pretty good.

The only people who are complaining seem to be people who haven't played the game and don't realize what it is. It's ridiculous and Gearbox has much bigger issues to work on (like the framerate on PS3) before adding pointless garbage to their game.

I could care less about a trade system, I just want a loot system that'd allow you to set Give In Turn, Random, or some other method for Yellow loot >_<
Other than that I've had no problems. Me and my friend just set up who has priority to what weapon types.

And I have no idea what the framerate issue is on the PS3, but I do have a friend that keeps complaining about lag when we play though I don't experience any...

@hpv: Once it was known that it was FFA loot, most people simply DON'T co-op with strangers. Like I said, they are rigging it in their minds. It only works now because on one wants to waste hours of gameplay only to get their stuff stolen so they just play with friends.

Is that what they were going for? That's like saying if they set it up so you could only co-op with your buddy list that the game is "fine," because people play it as such. If the change was implemented people would use it. Seems like it's pretty obvious that it should be a priority for them.

And obviously not the top one given that there were day 1 glitches. But that fact only proves that they can screw up, so maybe they should listen to the fans.

Framerate is bad on 360 too. Crit one of those land-worms while zoomed in (or sometimes not) and you'll see a serious framerate. Same as zoomed-in headshots up close.
I will now say the game goes from being reasonably difficult to INSANELY HARD the second playthrough (if you are playing solo). My poor Hunter keeps getting murdered by BigMotha Skags that show up every two seconds. Grr...

I'm running the game completely maxed out at 1920x1200 resolution, and it's fantastic.

What's not fantastic is the complete inability to play online. I tried connecting to one friend's game 14 times in a row. It's completely broken. Get on fixing those port issues Borderlands.

Also, a loot system or a way to share information would be great. Right now, it's mic-only and you have to say all the stats and it gets confusing. "45 damage times two fire." "Wait, fires two bullets or is the fire damage times two?" And when you say all that, and need to compare 2-3 weapons, it gets really confusing. There should be an option to view your ally's equipment from your screen. That would fix it. That same window could let you trade. Problem fixed.

Most of the framerate issues a memory leaks. It's kind of ridiculous it's the kind of issue you have when you are either amateur or you rush, though even rush jobs usually don't have them. Gearbox has always been this bad, it's just most of their screw ups are on PC and PC is more forgiving since it has more ram ect ect,. for shitting programing to waste resources. PS3/Xbox360 have finite resources making memory leaks worse.

I just play single player first, get the best gear then online generally those drops dont compete with my purples and orangoutangs(that means orange =D) Then I look like D Trump rather than J Travolta (my live gamertag hit me up with friend request if ya ever wanna play some Border, cause I am down) cause when loot drops I scoff and say, "ain't shit to what I got" with my best impression of scooter. But then again, rolling like a bad mo-fo aint for everybody.

The thing everyone that is bitching about FFA seems to forget is that a better gun is always just one other mob fight away. While I'm not all that apposed to a loot asignment system (if it times out to free up the loot rather quickly), an actual trade window would significanlty slow down the game. I wanna go kill crap, get more loot and finish this quest...not look at your collection of Unique weapons.

I've played with a few ridiculous loot whores. Whatever. I'm finding that guns become obsolete so quickly that it makes little sense to hoard them. The next loot drop is just around the corner.

I've actually made a bunch of new friends playing Borderlands. It's a great game if you have cool people to play with.

Hit me up if you ever want to rock out in the wastes. XBLGC = Lost i t W

Not that its a real issue but I'd like a town chest (think diablo) where I can store things that I like but don't necessarily use all that often. Sometimes I'll find weapons that aren't all that powerful but have cool effects. Also I'd like to have scrappy as a pet (he's Crazy Earl's pet skagg). :P

Gee, it sure would be nice to have petty requests about multiplayer loot splitting. Quite a shame that I can't since they released a horribly bugged PC version that won't let me actually PLAY multiplayer in a multiplayer-based game.

What was that one week delay for, again?

You know, given the general premise of the game, I can see why Gearbox feels this way about the loot. The game sorta screams "gold rush fever" to someone who hasn't yet purchased the game like myself. The title even sorta conveys this whole "Every man for himself" vibe, even if a major component of the game is mutiplayer.

I think one of the best things they could have done is put people on an imaginary world where something makes you fight every thing around you, even those who've helped you, for the tools to survive. It just makes the experience more believable.
