Borderlands Steam pre-order deal is live; specs revealed photo

Itching to give the PC version of Borderlands a shot? Does the lack of it feel like a badger has clawed into your stomach and annihilated your inner being with its goblin teeth? Tell me about it. While the version doesn’t hit retail shelves or Steam until October 26th, pre-ordering may serve to dull the pain of not having it in hand. Even better, the Steam pre-order deal -- which went live today -- at least guarantees action the instant the title launches. It doesn’t fix the inner-being-lessness, but it’s a more soothing option than, say, doing nothing.

The current Steam pre-order deal -- announced this afternoon by Valve -- also cuts the price by 10 percent, making the title $44.99 instead of $49.99.

While the price is nice, it’s pointless if the target PC can’t run it. The Steam pre-order page lists the requirements. At minimum, Borderlands requires a 2.4 Ghz processor, 1 GB of RAM, A GeForce 8 or a Radeon R8xx series graphics card and 8 GB of hard drive space.

Ah -- if only graphics cards could also function as time travel devices.

Ah well. So long as the PS3 version isn't totally unplayable, I'll be happy.

...My God... I can almost run the PC version of this. Damn you Pixel Shader 2.0, damn you!!!

Also, @Aughndibi

Why would the PS3 version be unplayable?

pardon my ignorance, but the ATI R8xx series are the HD 5800 and similar cards?? I guess my lowly mobility radeon x1700 wont be able to run it.
I really want a gaming pc.

On a sadder note:
Earlier I was wading through some Borderlands 1UP comments (stumbled upon the article in which Borderlands devs declared that the PC version would look better), and came to the realization that console fanboys are dumb enough as to reject powerful PCs. Who on earth would reject a better computer? Every time I get caught reading those comments I die a little bit inside.

Good thing I still have destructoid to come back to!

I wonder if the 2.4 processor is one core (p4 2.4 for instance) or if a dual core less will work. I still meet it with a dual core 2.53 but its closer than I like.

*sigh* the downside to pc gaming rises once more, the next round of upgrades needed.

It strikes me as surprising that the requirements are basically the same as every other Unreal 3-engined game out there, yet people are still bemoaning being unable too meet its paltry minimum specs.

Seriously, if your PC can't run U3, it's not a gaming PC and you aren't a PC gamer!

Also, the '2.4Ghz' refers to a single core processor - Multiple core machines often clock slower but make up with it by shunting the OS and other processes to another core, meaning they cope better.

R800 must be a typo.

there is NO WAY that this game only supports ATI cards that have only been on the market for a week or so. G80 series is now 3 years old, so it's more likely that it's supposed to say R600.

*Sigh...*

It takes them fucking forever to give us system requirements, and this is what they give us? Seriously? 2.4GHz processor? What does that even mean? I mean, most people will meet that, but is it talking pentium4 or Core2 or what? That might be important to some people. And Geforce 8 series or better? That's completely meaningless. Give a fucking specific card. Would it run on the 8500? A lot of devs post something like "Geforce 7800 or higher(excluding Geforce 8500)". Man this pisses me off.

Well, the 8500 and 8400 are usually excluded from the "8000 series" cards because they are budget cards that are significantly less powerful than the other cards in that line. It's just how video cards work. If you're looking to play games, you never want to get the bottom-of-the-line cards (they used to use "MX" to indicate they were pieces of crap). If it ever seems too good to be true ("Wow, an 8000 series card for $100?"), it probably is.

Guys, calm down about the system specs. The 2.4Ghz processor requirement refers to a single-core VERY OLD Pentium 4 processor. Any decent dual-core AMD or Core 2 processor will be fine, even if its cores run slower than 2.4Ghz. This requirement has been used for many games for quite some time now.

Nice, all my specs still meet the requirement, now I'm just wondering if it'll max it out. Only part that doesn't really meet is my 2.2 ghz E4500 core 2 duo.

@mkshiranui, that'll run it on medium settings.

I got a 4870 and 2 gigs of ram (Can't really add more unless I buy two 2 gig ddr2 sticks, i have a microATX mobo...).

Those seem like they might be recommended specs. Borderlands uses the Unreal 3 engine so I imagine if you can run that there's a good chance you can run this.

@mkshiranui It doesn't work like that. You could have a card from many years ago with 512MB of VRAM. Yes, your card should be able to run that game on high settings and possibly max.

@ bustaballs

uhh actually mkshiranui is correct. 512mb of ram on a low end card does not make it anything like as powerful as a high end card with the same amount. it's like putting a bodykit on a shitty car. it might look fast to the untrained eye, but it's still shitty underneath.

sorry mkshiranui, that 4350 doesn't really stand much of a chance of running this game at max or even high settings, so i wouldn't go getting your hopes up.
