Borderlands selling big: 2 million copies off the shelves photo

Moons and moons ago, we learned that Borderlands was in fact selling well despite being released in the middle of a cluttered seasonal release schedule. This afternoon gave us a solid number indicating its success: Gearbox Software’s colorful RPS has sold 2 million units worldwide. Let that sink in.

The number was announced in Take-Two Interactive’s latest financial release, according to Joystiq. The publisher added the Borderlands “has established itself as a key franchise for Take-Two … “ No doubt it has. Now, how about that Borderworlds thing we heard about not so long ago?

I still think Pachter was right. Can you honestly tell me that you don't think this game would have sold better if there was no such thing as MW:2 or L4D2?

@John Johnson: Not really. It is a new IP after all, and with barely any competitive multiplayer.

Tsk, Pachter was wrong, the man literally said that the game was sent to DIE between MW2 and DA:O . Also Borderlands was a new IP, and that's already a bit more difficult to sell.

Eh, I was gonna refute you guys, but that quote is sourced to a 60 minute video, I don't have the patience to deal with that, so I'll just take the easy way out. You're right, I'm wrong.

I'm gonna take this opportunity to express a grievance that has nothing to do with the article:

Destructoid, when are you gonna fix the comment tracking?

P.S. Borderlands is awesome.

This is good news, I just finished it the other night with my friend, we were both disappointed with the story but everything else was just plain fun for dicking around with friends in.

The success of this game is something I've yet to contribute to.

I really want to pick it up this Christmas.

Take-Two Guy: Wait... that game actually made money? Why hasn't it already been franchised?!?!
Get that sequel factory moving asap!

So much for "sent to die." But really, that's great news. It shows that a new IP with a unique artstyle can still stand up to the likes of a vastly more popular sequel with a generic realistic style without being utterly destroyed in sales.

Game does not deserve the praise that it has been getting. However, it is still a decent game.

I hope that in the rush to franchise this IP, they don't short us of DLC for this current game. I think this game could stand on its own for a long time with the right kind of DLC (in the vein of WoW's expansions as well as regular, console type of DLC). We have no clue how big Pandora really is and they could get into a lot of different areas before moving into Borderworlds.

Borderlands was mediocre. I loved it, but there was absolutely no interesting narrative. It hit my loot-whore note perfectly. If there was a cohesive story this would be the greatest game ever made.

I'll be taking the cheap way out and Gameflying it contributing absolutely nothing to the developers who worked their asses off for years to bring it to fruition or to the publishers who risked their dollars to fund such hard working folk.

I love Borderlands. I got it on launch day and still find myself playing it a lot of time time. Yesterday I spent a good chunk of my morning with the game. :)

The game is great fun for what it is. Those expecting an RPG experience with more depth than applying a few skill points will not be satisfied. Those that like to continually blow stuff away with moar and moar powerful guns will be thrilled. As big and RPG fan as I am (and as lackluster an FPS fan I am), I'm surprised I'm still playing it nearly every night! It's simply a blast to play!

2 million is a good number, but I'd like a breakdown of that over the three platforms. Judging by their reaction and support, I don't think the PC version did as well.

It's a shame too. I love it, but I've only played it co-op LIKE THEY FREAKIN' INTENDED once.

yes, it was Pachter that said the game was left out to die... what a dick. 2 million is very respectable for this pretty mediocre game with great art direction, fun gameplay and an incredibly shitty RPG story with an ending from a budget NES title; 2 million is not bad at all, let's hope the sequel is a bit different.
